Little Tommy was trying very hard to hold back his tears. While playing in the playground with friends, he accidentally fell down, scratching his knees and causing red-raw sores.
Although in pain, Tommy didn't want to be seen crying by his friends, so he tried ignoring the pain.
"I'm a big man now," he said to himself, trying to look tough.
While he was mumbling to himself, one of his friends approached him. "Tommy, are you okay? Want me to accompany you home?" Dylan asked.
"I'm good!" Tommy answered.
Dylan stared at the red, raw sores on Tommy's knees and was skeptical. "I think you should go home and have your wounds cleaned and checked."
"Yeah, I agree," chimed in Clyde, another one of Tommy's friends. "I heard something bad would happen if wounds got infected."
Tommy looked at Clyde and asked him what would happen if the wound became infected.
"I heard that maggots will grow on the wound, and once it becomes bad enough, the infected part needs to be removed," Clyde answered, looking really grim.
"W-what! No way that's true!" Tommy screamed, looking aghast.
"I also heard my mom saying that. That's why I wanted to escort you home," Dylan added.
Tommy was not sure if what his friends said was true, but he's starting to get scared. Looking at his knees, which seemed to be getting redder, Tommy was getting more scared.
"I want to go home," Tommy said, finally relenting.
Although he wanted to be seen as a tough kid, he didn't want to lose his legs. Just imagining maggots growing on his knees scares him.
"Alright, we'll escort you home!" The two other boys offered.
And with that, Tommy's attempt to look tough failed though he didn't care as treating his legs was more important.
