**Does writing energize or exhaust you? **
First of all I wish you a beautiful day!
It is getting colder here in Washington State.
In today's Question & Answer portion that I will share as an Author,
Does writing energize or exhaust me?
Without a doubt, it energizes me. It can be exhausting, because once I get deeply focused I don’t want to come up from the depths of concentration and I tend to ‘hermit’ for prolonged periods with little sleep, but yes, the feeling of being engrossed in the story and the discover of the plot is very thrilling.
I used the term ‘discovery of the plot’ very specifically. For me, writing is an extemporaneous process. I might have some vague idea where the story is leading, but almost entirely the plot and characters unfold before me and I rarely know what is going to happen, what they will say, or who they are going to meet until I am in ‘creative mode.’
You might ask how that can be? I can’t explain it any more than I can tell you why one person is driven to write, and others are not. Personally, I think it’s an inspiration from God. I’m chuckling as I write that because I probably just lost some of you, but if you have experienced true inspiration and the serendipity of having words drop onto the screen while you sit there amazed, saying “Wow, I didn’t see that coming,” then you can’t truly appreciate the moment. I can’t tell you how often I sat at my computer recording the events that Gary, Paige, Suraya, and the others were experiencing and felt details and plot lines drop into place without my forethought. Some of these ideas and characters have come from experiences that John or I have had, but the details of those moments, and many others, just slip into place out of seemingly random thoughts that drop into my fingers as they hit the keys.
These are the moments that give me energy and drive me to write more.
