Louise penned her name on the manuscript. Rodney would have wanted it this way, she thought. The book was the last in a series that she wrote under that name.
Louise carefully put the manuscript on the desk. Louise felt weak and couldn't remember when she ate. It didn't matter, she reasoned. She was dying, but she completed the task she'd set out to accomplish.
The series of war tales chronicling Sébastien's tour of duty was captivating and almost immediately became best sellers. Only she knew Sébastien was a fictional character that lives in her head.
It amazed Louise that no one came poking about to meet that author of the Wartime Chronicles. The stories were shocking and inspiring to many readers and on any given day 20-40 letters dropped through the mail slot. She read some of them, but after a few, she'd just tuck them into a box and go about finishing the day's tasks.
Today she was exhausted. It was useless to treat this condition and Louise was losing bits of herself daily. She crawled into her bed after struggling into a nightgown.
It was only a matter of time, she knew, and one morning she wouldn't wake up to regale the world of Sébastien's brave deeds. Louise blew out the flickering candle. One day the world may discover that she was the dead ghostwriter of Sébastien, but she wouldn't worry about that now.
