measuring her hair

(1)

in the grass
on my back
eyes closed

(2)

measuring her hair
in the bathroom mirror
the lengthening night

(3)

co-dependency …
all the books on my desk
I’ll never read

(4)

hovering nearby
a squadron of red
dragonflies

(5)

even here in the city
goose calls echo
through the night

(6)

one tiny rain drop
pulling me back
to the present

(7)

passion fruit
behind the school
left unpicked

Those geese can be noisy... I can relate to that. And what's better than laying in the grass!

That last one I found interesting, just wondering what inspired that one. Literal fruit or something else?

That one has kind of a funny story. The inspiration came from a regular old fruit tree that was next to a school I work at, and that was full of ripe fruit.

It seemed like such a shame to let such good looking food go to waste, and I was surprised that the school would let an opportunity to teach kids about such things slip by, so the poem came to mind.

What’s funny is that I mistook pomegranates for passion fruit. After I first wrote the poem I realized I had mis-identified the fruit, but when I tried to be true to the situation and real life experience, writing about pomegranates instead of passion fruit didn’t have the same effect.

So, the poem is a bit of a creation to purposefully make the reader wonder if there’s a Lolita thing happening or something like the Police song Don’t Stand So Close To Me.

The pomegranates fooled you, that is funny! They grow wild all over the US southwest. Passion fruit I would misidentify because I've never seen it in on trees before. Well done on that part, making you ponder the Lolita thing! Don't Stand So Close To Me is a little creepy in a way looking back now... Especially if it were my daughter!

It was more like I knew what the fruit was, but I connected the wrong word to it without realizing it. I didn’t grow up near pomegranate trees and having lived outside of the States for so long now, I don’t always recall the right English words at the right time. 🤣 It’s more common with words that I don’t use frequently.

Yeah, that Police song is a creepy one.

I can relate to this one, especially in the spring when the Canada geese arrive.

That’s funny, I’m right at what is probably the northern limit of where swans and geese come to winter, so this is a busy time of year in the skies around me. It’s really nice to see their V-shaped flocks glowing silvery in the moonlight.

It's interesting how they arrive at different times of the year. For us, they herald the coming of spring and summer :)

Spring and summer, I never would have guessed that. Where I’ve lived they’ve always been connected to the end of fall/beginning of winter and the Endo winter/beginning of spring. Interesting, indeed.

Yes that is all it takes for me, and yet it is enough to keep me on track. It's the simple things in life, that so often get overlooked. xx

Overlooked a lot of times because they blend in to what is normal. When you feel a tiny drop of rain, it’s such a small thing, but it’s a change. I think maybe some of the power of simple things comes from them being out of place in some kind of way.
