It's minutes from midnight.
The earth ticks as good people farewell their kin,
Recoil in basements, underground stations
Huddling - on rooftops, staring into floodlands
And I turn to metronomic domesticity.
Hanging clothes, washing dishes rhythmically
Ordering just so -
the shelling and rushing water becomes muted,
Still - the ache in my chest.
Pobblebonking frogs and willy wagtails chatter
Under a pure white moon
It's close to midnight, and for a blessed moment
There is peace.
With Love,

I have been writing the last couple of nights, and to release my poem and then read yours, I noticed that we both reference a metronome, animals, the land, and the thought of a quiet night. It is really impressive that we both have analogous thoughts when we are both in such distant places and civilizations.
I always have had this strong feeling about you that tells me that you are a sensitive, empathic soul, who truthfully cares for others and the world, so I am sure that what's happening in the world right now is keeping you thinking, to say the least.
In the midnight hour is when we have to be the strongest, to face the dark, to enlighten the others to drop the swords.
Gosh, we consciously connect again!
Have you heard of the doomsday clock? It's what got me writing this poem. Both a symbolic and literal midnight. What do we do in the last seconds?
It's so easy to feel helpless. My empathy indeed HURT this week .. thinking became FEELING into blackness and the hurt I describe was genuine.
Here in Australia there was not only news of war but terrible flooding, which is still happening. The thought of Ukrainians in basements and Australians on rooftops was an incredible image to work with and I hope I conveyed that in my poem.
Desperate, sad times... There seems a lot of poetry this week as we feel through this mess.

Wow, I have been so busy that honestly I wasn't informed about the floodings in Australia, what a devastating picture of it! I'm am sorry, I hope that authorities and the communities are joining forces to help those in need who have lost so much.
I would say that I will pray for everyone but I am not a religious person, although certainly I wish for all of those in suffering to find their way of healing.
I just googled about the doomsday clock and I can understand widely your inspiration and meaning, so thanks for the explanation.
As you say, let's change our surroundings as we can so maybe we could shape a better future and endure what's next to come.
A big hug @riverflows, take care.
To be honest not sure what authorities are doing.. events at this scale mean it's hard to respond to all calls. I've had to switch off news to take care of myself. At first it was as the poem said . Consoling myself with daily chores... Now I feel better as I am focussing on what matters in the now. Big hugs!!
Wish we are in peacefull world
we must do our best to create it, and focus as much as we can on the good. Some things are beyond our control 🙏🌱💚

I almost never see midnight, unless I am awakened in the night....
Nor do I Lmao. Reference for poetic purposes only..
"It's close to midnight, and for a blessed moment
There is peace."
Sadly these days the world isn't peaceful enough. That we fear of what may happen deep in the night.
Very thoughtful poem I loved it, whenever we can we have to be a light in the darkness of all the people around us, and now with this happening in Europe it keeps me awake some nights for so many innocents dying there, thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for commetning, I really appreciate it. Not many people comment on poetry so it means a lot that you took the time.
Whenever I think of flooding, I think of the Tohoku earthquake 10 (?) years ago and the resulting tsunami that killed so many people. For days we watched on the news as people were who had been trapped on rooftops were finally rescued.
Good poem!
