Here is the translation of the 3. poem from Grochowiak's debut volume of poetry, "Knight's ballad" (1956) - "Rural cinema". Even though it's a short poem, translating it was quite a challenge. Most of the rhymes are my own ideas, AI and algorithms didn't help me much in this case.
Oto trzeci wiersz z debiutanckiego tomu poetyckiego Grochowiaka, "Ballada rycerska" z 1956 roku - "Kino wiejskie". Mimo, że to krótki wiersz, jego przetłumaczenie było sporym wyzwaniem. Większość rymów jest mojego pomysłu, AI i algorytmy w tym przypadku niewiele mi pomogły.
RURAL CINEMA
They showed us Hamlet in the cinema's show
Under the overhang of an apple tree.
The peasants looked into the the glow
Of a melancholy sea.
Then through the heather, through the streams
They crept silently into houses.
And for the first time they kissed the feets
Of their astonished spouses.
And boys — by the river — as night settled in,
Lying near water, close to the stream.
They watched: how strangely, how light does it seem,
Ophelia's hair flow in this twilight dream.

Pod wielkim nawisem jabłoni.
Patrzyli chłopi w głębinę
Melancholii.
Potem przez wrzosy, przez strużki
Do chat skradali się cicho.
I po raz pierwszy całowali nóżki
Zdumionym kobitom.
A chłopcy — wieczorem — nad rzeką,
Z twarzami nad wodą leżeli.
Patrzyli: jak dziwnie, jak lekko
Płyną włosy głupiej Ofelii...

| I decided to start a project to translate into English the poems of a prominent Polish poet, although somewhat forgotten today. He is practically unknown outside Poland. Stanislaw Grochowiak published his poetry from the 1950s to the 1970s. He had a very specific style, inspired by the ordinary and even a certain imperfection. He was accused of being fascinated by ugliness and "turpism", but this was probably due to the misunderstanding of his poetry by poets of the generation older than him. He himself spoke about "miserabillism" in his poetry, i.e. showing the sublime through the prism of low, flawed things and matters. His poetry also displays a fascination with the baroque and grotesque. | Postanowiłem rozpocząć projekt polegający na tłumaczeniu na język angielski wierszy wybitnego polskiego poety, choć dzisiaj już nieco zapomnianego. Poza granicami Polski jest praktycznie nieznany. Stanisław Grochowiak publikował swoje poezje od lat 50 do 70 XX wieku. Cechował go bardzo specyficzny styl, inspirował się zwyczajnością, a nawet pewną ułomnością.
