You Shouldn't Have
On the other side of the cold glass,
your cheek resting against the smooth seams.
I knew that look that you knew you gave,
of almosts and what could have beens.
We had a moment or two, you and I,
we shared a thought, a word and a wine.
I don't know if I'll ever come this way again,
to while away your time.
On the tips of toes you stood up tall,
reaching for what was too high and too far.
You shouldn't have stayed but you did,
You shouldn't have strayed into the stars.
Remember that time I first touched your hand,
the excitement of the unknown.
Or the time we hid deep in the trees,
Young at heart in bodies well overgrown.
I knew that you were the one for me,
but I was not the one who would be your best.
But when all that was left bare in front of me,
I succumbed and failed every test.
I wanted to be the one who made you laugh,
the Spring after a long Winter.
The person who could bloom your smile,
And upon me your gaze would linger.
Yet instead, like old Autumn leaves,
I am left to fall upon the ground.
Crackling and crunching under heavy foot,
Screaming without a sound.
A mind spinning into the surreal,
a nightmare that splits heart in two.
The irony of fulfilling your dreams,
when your dream doesn't desire you.
You never should have held my hand,
you should have pushed away at the chance.
You never should have looked my way.
You should never have returned my glance.
Broken that day and for all to come,
Unable to ever be made whole.
Everything that was always waited,
arrived and took my soul.
Love this stanza the most! You brought me down to the autumn ground only to be crushed and left in silence - it stirred up emotions within me. Thanks for sharing this piece 😊
Everyone is fighting for relevance, in a world that barely needs them.
Staying right about here with no plans of leaving until they make me.
Eventually, the moment always breaks. Wouldn't it be nice to live there forever?
I won't do a one-night stand, but I will do a three-year relationship.
Very touching and soulful. The thought the regret and the hurt...
Perhaps without this in life, there is no joy?
True, they're two sides of the same coin
damn that is a lovely quote
Thanks :)
I like the lines about leaves much. You described the autumn very well, and love in autumn is different ;)
It is different, isn't it?
I wonder of there is a study on what happens to couples depending on what season they fall in love.
Perhaps, it is too emotional season to fall in love or have deep feeling for your love ;)
I particularly loved these lines for some reason. I think it needs a lot of dexterity to come up with something like this and you ATE, so to speak.
I think being versatile is a major flex and you've captured the raw emotions of love and loss and longing so well. Amazing.
Versatility is valuable in my experience, but often what holds us back, is our embarrassment in trying. I am definitely not a poet, but writing poetry also helps develop other skill areas and reflection points. Why are we so shy to try?
I feel if we can reflect, if we can think, if we can be able to evaluate our lives, then we can actually try poetry. Because that's basically what it's all about, the outpour of your emotions through your words.
Beautiful lines. A heart full of love, I think if we have love for our beloved ones, it gives us strength to live.
As corny as it sounds, relationships and love is all that really matters to the world of humans. The rest is noise.
WOWWOWOWO!
You are also a poet!
This rhymes reminded me many different moments of my relationship with Mary! Such inspired text!
I am glad. With all of my writing, I want to use my own experiences (with poetic license) to connect with people and perhaps, encourage some memories or reflections :)
It reminded me of my first crush
may we all know this feeling, even if it breaks our hearts
