Atarazanas Market - History, architecture and art 📷 Malaga - Spain

There are places and buildings that stand out above others and are icons of the city.

Every district of the city of Malaga has its market, where normally in the morning hours until two in the afternoon people can go to the stalls that are there and buy different products.

There are butchers, fishmongers, and even stalls where they sell individual spices. You can order as much as you want. In fact, that's the way we buy spices in my family, we like the smell, the taste, it's more natural, so to speak, than what they sell in supermarkets. And this is just one example.

Many people go to the markets in every part of the city, which are open from Monday to Friday, the products are different.

But there is one market, which is a municipal market that has been declared of cultural interest and historical heritage of Spain, that stands out above all the others.

Normally markets, with some exceptions, are modern constructions, but this one has a lot of history. And I am talking about the Mercado de Atarazanas.

When you look at its exterior façade, its obviously Muslim design catches your eye. It is a very old building, but you can also see that it has been restored and maintained over time. It was built in the second half of the 14th century. If you want to know more detailed information about the place, I leave it here.

In my opinion, it is the largest market in the city, as it covers large areas and is surrounded by very old buildings and many places of historical interest.

According to a plaque, it was formerly a barracks and also a military hospital and really looks like one, although it has been renovated. Like many other buildings of that period in the city, it has a neo-Arabic style with beautiful details and that is what I liked most about this building, beyond the fact that it is a market.

Although its façade seems to have a rectangular shape, the upper part, the roof has a trapezoid aspect and there is a very interesting mix of materials between bricks, stone and also iron.

The market is located between the streets Atarazanas, Guillén de Castro, Sagasta and Arriola. And because of its location, it is possible that its façade faced the Mediterranean Sea in the past, as it was much further inland in the city and over the years it has gained ground.

Not only sells different kinds of products inside, but also has a tapas bar and during the day it is always full of people tasting the delicacies that are served there. It is open from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 2 pm.

There are three things I must highlight about this place that have amazed me. One of them is the grand entrance to the place with that Nasrid style that rises above the large iron structure. Its details, style and decorations are beautiful.

As a second thing, the roof is beautiful, and in the sun its colours shine, it has that Arabic style that can't be mistaken and from far away you can appreciate its beauty.

I also want to highlight the work of decorations that the iron structure has all around the establishment. I tried to take some closer pictures so that you could appreciate this beautiful artwork.

On the other hand, precisely on the opposite side and along Segasta street you can see an exquisite glasswork, which unfortunately due to the position of the sun and the tall buildings that are close by, there is not an ideal illumination.

20241120_164630.jpg20241120_164637.jpg

This glasswork or stained glass windows have very beautiful motifs and colours alluding to fishing, to the port in general, but I also believe that it alludes to trade by sea and the arrival of ships to the city for different purposes, which is why I believe that this building had one of its sides facing the sea.

I can't deny that, although this part is the most hidden as it faces a small street in the historic centre, it is the most beautiful, at least for me, because of these decorations, the style and the art, great art reflected in this place. I love the marine motifs.

I found it to be an iconic building that brings together history, beautiful architecture and style, coupled with a lot of art as a whole.

Thank you very much for watching and reading this far. I send you a big hello. See you soon.

Something that I always highlight and admire about your city is the architecture and how well preserved the period buildings are. This market is really beautiful, the glass of this building is a beautiful work of art
I appreciate that you let us know about this place and the beautiful photographs dear friend @avdesing
Have a beautiful day in the company of your loved ones

You have no idea how much I admire the art and those little details that I look at up close and fascinate me. Thank you so much!😃

I am a geometrical soul. I mean I find leisure in seeing architectural marvels. I want to wander and stroll through markets like this. In lahore, there is anarkali market which is iconic too. I just go there to see the marvel of colonial era. Moreover, the Arabic architecture is just loving ❤️.

I love this place so much that I visit it very often, I totally agree with you, it's pure art! Thank you so much!💗

A wonderful place, brings me back to memories of when I was there, thank for sharing!

It is an impressive and beautiful building! Thank you, and I'm glad it brings back such good memories!😃

I love walks.... yesterday the sun was already down but I was able to take those pictures and it was great! There weren't so many people and it was better... Thanks!!!!😃

De nada, gracias a tí por estos paseos!! 🤗

That's a beautiful city. I am fascinated by architecture, the older the better, and this city doesn't disappoint. The glassworks are fantastic too...thanks for the tour!!

That beautiful glassware fascinated me and the antiques too, I totally agree. Thank you very much!😃

I am very impressed by all this close explanation. I can see that you have enjoyed the walk admiring the absolute beauty and ‘curiosity’ of the Atarazanas market.
I love this kind of architecture.
And the stained glass has left me speechless... it's simply marvellous.

Yes, whenever I pass by there, I always stare at the beauty, the details and that glass fascinates me! Intoxicated with art! Yes, thank you Nani!🤗

Lindo día. Voy a ver si encuentro alguna intoxicación buena por aquí. Chau.
