The Glass Island
Since I wrote about Burano a few days back, I must write about Murano, the other populat island on the Venetian Lagoon. Murano is clearly visible from anywhere in northern coast of Venice. It is a short 10 min boat ride from Fondamente Nove stop with numerous services available round the clock.
This is the view of the island across the canal, Rio dei Vetra, where my ladies went on a mega shopping spree and I sat down lazily by a cafe, sipping through cappuccino after cappuccino and was having a time of my life watching people (only a few people) and watching sunset!
Here is my cappuccino and I can tell you that this may not be the best cappuccino of my life in terms of taste (but it was rather good), but when I combine the relaxing experience where I was mostly stationary for about 2 hours (yes, two hours!), I would say that is near perfect experience! Why being stationary and drinking coffee is good? If you insist I must show you Peppa Pig!
Anyhow, as I was drining my fifth cup of cappuccino, I saw them come out on the other side, and go back again!
Bless them! You might think the entire island is a retail burnout, but it is not, although my writing might let you believe that. It is not. The island is home to many glass making artisans who produce rather amazing glass artifacts. The most interesting thing is that they let you see how they are making the glass.
In this glass factory, the artisans are rather young, which is a great thing to observe. I don't like to see a form a art that is dying, rather see an art that is thriving. Here they are putting a piece of a glass vase in the furnace and re-shaping and decorating it.
However, static images do not do justice to this process, and I don't have a good enough video. However, there are impressive videos of this on youtube.
I really like this one. It shows you how hard the process is:
I love this still from this video, with which I will end this post.
Five!? No ways man, five is danger!!
what is the worst that can happen? :)
You can always neutralize that with Prosecco
Hehe, I am so very glad you are wise to the powerful and useful neutralising effects of prosecco!! 😀😀
the amount of Prosecco they consume is impressive to watch, and so is their macchiato drinking habits........it all works out.
A healthy balance 😀😀
That's quite a few. I have two these days and I'll get a headache, so you have me beat. But if my Sicilian grandfather were here he would laugh and comment "that's cute" while he went back to the pitchers of espresso he drank everyday.
Wonderful photos, man. I agree, it's great seeing the traditional crafts going strong. I remember watching some glass blowers when I was a kid at a factory around my hometown. I think that closed down many years ago. Glad to see it's still going strong in Italy.
five is nothing :)
They put a lot of milk there :)
By the way, I have special stuff for you as I was thinking about you while I was in Venice and found this shop.
If you ever go there, you got to visit this place.
They have a website; do look up
When I was in Venice last time I bought my mother a set of red Murano necklace and earrings. Those were very pretty! I never visited Murano, sounds like a great place to go.
We have a glass studio on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound where you can watch glass art being made in front of you, but the famous Murano glass making is probably a lot more impressive.
If you see that YouTube video I posted you can appreciate that
I loved that Island, too when I went there. I have pictures somewhere, but am too lazy right now to search for them as that was like 15 years ago :-D
Especially the very small and colorful items marveled me. I had always thought they're made by machines, but seeing them produce them with such precision of hands and movements - almost like a surgery.
Thanks for bringing memories back!
Yes. It’s impressive amount of physical work and patience with precision
5 cappuccinos are a lot of cappuccinos. How was your heart rate? Can you sleep that night? 😅
The YT video is a marvel, an art that shouldn't be missed; experiencing it must be twice as incredible. Thank goodness there's no AI for this, it's a beautiful job.
So, which one was your favorite, Murano or Burano?
I slept very well all night :)
I think both the islands have its own charm. When we got back in the evening kids went straight to bed. My wife and I went downstairs at a local Bacaro for a nightcap that neutralized all the caffeine
Stunning view, justifies why it made your coffee near perfect experience. I can take only one coffee max, but Lemon tea I can take often, as much as possible.
It’s not that I drink that much coffee everyday:) However, I had nothing to do that day and it felt like a great idea :
Hmm, I have heard drinking too much coffee affects sleep.
I have never seen glassmaking in real life. It looks cool. I think that images made of stained glass often look very interesting. Especially because I am fond of fire- I spent years making pyrography(wood burning art). That is the reason why I chose fieryfootprints as my nickname here. If I am not mistaken I only moved to traditional art on canvas last year. And in the end of the year I moved again to digital art.
Yes, it’s a mesmerizing process. You can spend hours looking at it
That part where you're sitting at the café for two hours, just sipping cappuccinos and watching the sunset, is just the best. Sometimes, the best experiences aren’t about doing a lot but just being in the moment
I am a few months from turning 50; life takes a different meaning at this age; at least it did for me. Especially after my spine surgery I have a feeling I have fewer years left that I have lived for sure; perhaps a lot fewer years. So I take life slow these days.
woah, spine surgery and 50, but anyways you'd be surprised you'd live way longer than you think. I wish you many years ahead man many many years
I love Murano glass, so colourful and imaginative, collectors pieces, I love their clown figures especially.
I guess you know that the glass works set up here on the island many many many genrations ago as the powers in venice were afraid of places going on fire and causing destruction within the city
Yes. They explain that. Most of Venice was wood construction and was burned down multiple times. These glass furnaces run 1100-1400 degrees C, and they run 24-7 so they moved it to another smaller island
makes sense, that is just a touch hot!
Haha, five cappuccinos, You probably didn’t sleep that night. Murano looks so nice, just sitting, watching people, drinking coffee… simple life, good life. The glass making is amazing too, like magic how they shape it
It takes a long time to shape the glass. A lot of manual labor goes into it
indeed, it's a masterpiece
Sweet addition to the travels of Az, dude. The master craftsmen in the world are a rare breed these days - and glass blowing is such a mesmerizing process to watch! Thanks for sharing man
yes. I loved it. I have never seen anything like this up close and personal before.
Very impressive! I don't remember if it was you I mentioned it to, but we have a glass blowing studio near where I live. I think they offer classes and stuff like that. It might be interesting to check out one day.
it is a dying art here for sure, they can use some support if we can provide.
A glass island... Quite lovely.
I feel like Daddy Pig sometimes 😭😂😀, I wish everyday was a Saturday like today.
A day for doing nothing ✨
I am very much like daddy pig :)
Thank you for sharing your relaxing experience! While drinking your cappuccino you had a nice view on that small river. I am a real coffee lover, too, but prefer pure black coffee most of the time. 🙂

I had see art work maked in that island and is really beautiful!
That is amazing because you get to see how they make the glass. Thank you.
Amazing, I had no idea where that wonderful crystal came from. Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful place you bring us to with these spectacular images that are so appreciated!
❤️
What a truly amazing place, you managed to capture every detail of the moment in this place very well, it's truly amazing, have a nice day my friend ♥️
Viva Italia! One of the countries I wish to visit. Thanks for sharing a glimpse of how they make their craft in Murano. Five cups of cappuccino will keep me awake for the whole week. All the best!
