Welcome to the “Balcony of Europe” located in Nerja, the jewel of southern Spain

Nerja is a town east of Malaga, about an hour and a quarter by bus. The one way ticket costs about €7, the same as the return.

This is a very picturesque town whose forte is summer, but it is also busy in winter.

When I went to Nerja I did it because I had been recommended its beaches, but the truth is that I never got to them. In the end, because of the bus schedule I left a little later than I imagined and I didn't want to return to Malaga at night, so I was only there for a few hours, which was enough to eat something, walk around a part of the town and visit the Balcon de Europa.

I must admit that I did not know I was in the Balcon de Europa until I was there looking at Google Maps. As I mentioned, I was going to visit the beach, which apparently is a delight. Well, having seen it from the height I can attest that yes, it is a beauty.

The thing is that as you know, I let myself be guided by what I see at the moment and by what calls me. And you can imagine that when I saw “The Balcony of Europe”, the beach came second in my priorities, because I needed to know what it was all about.

It is, no more and no less, a viewpoint that offers a stunning panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, it is a square with a rounded shape, which gives the impression of being a large balcony created on the Andalusian coast.

The first thing I asked myself, and perhaps you are also wondering, is “why is it called the balcony of Europe? ” And apparently King Alfonso XII in 1885 was dazzled by these views and assigned such a name to the area, according to abc.es. However, there are certain discrepancies on this subject, but they are not at this time of our interest, since the truth is that sooner or later, this or that, named this site “The Balcony of Europe” and I think its name is very wise, not only for the views, but it is located well south of Spain, and although it is not the southernmost point of the continent, it is very close.

From the Balcon de Europa it is impressive to see the embrace of the mountains around the point where one is located and I don't know if I was lucky or if they are always there, but there were several seagulls flying below the balcony, at the height of the view and above. As I am fascinated by seagulls, I felt that the seagulls were putting on a show at that moment.

The cliffs also stand out in this site, and they are just what give the area the perfect touch for anyone who has ever associated this site with a balcony.

Something characteristic of here is that there are quite a few ice cream parlors right next to the area. It was December, the temperature was very pleasant and the truth is that an ice cream went very well with the departure, so I bought one.

The quality was excellent.

Nerja is a lovely little town. It has narrow streets like the different villages of Andalusia, it is almost all white and constantly shows the mountains from different perspectives, which I love because that is a feature that reminds me of Mendoza, the city where I was born and grew up.

Besides, the sea is right next to it. It is a really coastal town that is also sheltered by the mountains. Orange trees decorate its streets and the friendliness of its people is in the air.

It is not for nothing that Nerja has earned a place in the heart of every person who made a nice walk through Andalusian lands.

I have heard about Nerja but have never been to it. Such a nice little town and that view from the balcony is marvellous, but the most I liked is the pavement, made of pebbles!! 😍

Looks like a very amazing picture my friend
