A Nostalgic Stroll Through Geylang Serai: Culture, Lights, and Authentic Flavors

in Worldmappin9 hours ago

I initially planned to visit the old railway station at Bukit Timah this morning, but the weather turned grey, and I thought it wouldn’t be a good idea to go. Luckily, I didn’t follow through with my plan, as it started raining before noon. It was a dull Sunday, with rain continuing until late afternoon. It was a bit disappointing that this weekend didn’t go as planned at all.

However, later in the afternoon, the weather cleared up, so I decided to head out. At first, I considered sticking to my original plan, but since it was already nearing nighttime, there was no point in going to the old railway station—especially since there are no amenities there.

Still, I had the energy for a photowalk, so I decided to visit another place suggested by a fellow Hiver here in Singapore: the Geylang Serai Malay Market!

The reason it was suggested to me is that I visited Gemilang Kampong Gelam last week, so naturally, Geylang Serai came up in the conversation. The two are quite similar because of their Malay-themed shops. However, the main difference is that Geylang Serai Malay Market is considered the traditional marketplace for Malay food and products. It offers the widest variety of items, and the food is mostly authentic and traditional. In contrast, the food bazaars at Gemilang Kampong Gelam feature a fusion of traditional Malay and international cuisine.

This got me excited because it’s been years since my last visit, and I wanted to see what has changed, what has improved, and whether I still remember the times I spent there!

I got off at Eunos MRT station and was pleasantly surprised to see the main road adorned with stunning light displays!

From the station, I only needed to walk about 1km to reach the Geylang Serai Malay Market, which wasn’t too bad since, in my opinion, walking is a great form of exercise!

After a 10-minute walk, I finally made it to the event.

And for my drinks... White coffee iced!

And while eating... there's a stage for buskers at the center of the dining area. A good way to enjoy a nice dinner!

The Market is a beautiful place. Just look at the colored lights and the well paved streets, not to talk of the stunning interior decorations. No wonder there's crowds in there. You must have enjoyed this outing. Thanks for sharing.
