Helloo, adventurers of this nice worldmappin community, I hope you are having a great week. If you are as curious as I am, have you ever wondered What was the function of the Forts in the ancient centuries? Yes, it makes me wonder too. In this post apart from the beautiful landscapes that I will share with you, I will be mentioning some of the functions that these immense built works had.

Our adventure cost us a little more, even touring the Aragonese Pyrenees was not as difficult as it was to climb this fort located north of Huesca. This ancient construction now belonging to the municipality of Jaca has a very interesting history behind it.

First we left from the center at 13:00 hours, as we saw that it was a way of about 1 hour, we did not feel rushed so we took the path of the trail taking into account that you could go up the road that although it had quite difficult curves were more comfortable for our knees, but you could easily go by car.

From the path you could observe as you ascended the view of the Town and some nearby establishments, the hospital that was a few meters before going up to the fort and other fields or orchards.

According to the signs this fort was built in this location in order to give it a decisive importance in the border defense against France.

Although it never saw combat, it had tragic episodes during the Civil War and served as a prison until the 1950s during the dictatorship.

As we climbed the trail, I had to take 2-3 minute breaks as it was very rocky and it was hard to keep up the pace to get there in time, we took a little over 1 hour for those small necessary breaks.

I was impressed by the view and how small everything could be observed, the Fort's architecture and design made me feel like I was in an old time TV series. Although it is not allowed access to its facilities, since its last visit inside was in 1998 in an exhibition called The Inquisition: instruments of torture and capital punishment, there are a lot of photos on the website of the town that show how it is observed inside, since in 1978 it was subjected to a vote to turn it into a center of sporadic cultural activities and left many photographs as memories.

We decided to go around the fort to get to know it a little more and it was more of the same, until we found some tourist apartments behind it and we took a short rest under a tree while we ate an apple and continued on our way home this time.

Back in town, we found a small hut with some faded photographs of the fort that had a lot of information, some of it illegible, about the beginnings of its construction, the chronology of this fort, materials used for its construction, historical moments, etc.

Although many forts are built to show wealth, influence and glory of a ruler or King, a fort is a Castle built to defend against any war. Unlike others, this one was basically for military use even though it did not need action or use of its artillery.

I hope you liked this incredible post about this curious fort built on the Rapitán hill. It is a unique adventure to climb this hill, even a fun family weekend plan, so you can also schedule guided tours. I highly recommend it, apart from the fact that the history is interesting. It was about 4 kilometers from where I was staying, so it was an amazing day for sports and soaking in some learning.
