Talking about Hoi An, people will probably think of a city with quiet old houses, lovely lanterns or the old Pagoda Bridge. But today I will share something more interesting in Hoi An, I will take you to explore one of the oldest and famous villages for traditional pottery. If you have the opportunity to visit Hoi An, take some time to visit Thanh Ha pottery village.
1. Thanh Ha Pottery Village Hoi An
Address: Pham Phan Street, Thanh Ha Ward, City. Hoi An, Quang Nam
Thanh Ha Pottery Village is located next to the Thu Bon River in Cam Ha Commune, about 3 km west of the center of Hoi An Ancient Town and about 30 km from Da Nang.
I choose motorbike as my means of transportation for more convenience because the road to the pottery village is quite narrow. Moreover, with such an ancient and poetic Hoi An, traveling by motorbike gives me more freedom and comfort and makes it easier to enjoy the beautiful scenery on both sides of the road.
To move to Thanh Ha pottery village is extremely simple, you just need to search google to go to Pham Phan street or Duy Tan street, from here go to the pottery village area very close. If you have trouble finding the way, you can ask the locals here, they are very enthusiastic and happy to show you the way.
2. Explore Thanh Ha Pottery Village With Its Famous Pottery Making
Coming to Thanh Ha pottery village, I was able to visit the old pottery workshops here and learn about traditional pottery making. I have also heard from the old pottery artists here about the history of pottery, culture and people in Thanh Ha land. According to local people, Thanh Ha Pottery Village has a history of formation and development for 500 years, from the 16th century to the 21st century.
Until now, Thanh Ha still adheres to the traditional ceramic production processes. People here have used their house as both a place to live and a place for them to create ceramic works. That has created a special feature in the village's products. Products made from skillful and talented hands of craftsmen are everywhere. This has helped preserve the beauty of the traditional craft not only of Hoi An but also of the Vietnamese people.
The main products of the village are daily utensils such as cups, bowls, jars, jars, vases, ornamental pots, shapes of animals... with various designs and rich colors. In particular, to serve the needs of tourists, the village has also launched a series of beautiful ceramic souvenirs such as ceramic masks, reliefs, ashtrays, to he...
I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the fresh and peaceful space of the Vietnamese countryside. Where there are bamboo groves, wells, dirt roads and pretty little houses, looming behind the trees. Walking along the Thu Bon River and seeing the handmade ceramic utensils right in front of my eyes made me fall in love with this village and secretly thank the craftsmen who created it.
A very special thing in Thanh Ha pottery village is that the small roads in the village are not made of concrete as we often see but these roads are made of burnt brick. The small beautiful bricks arranged neatly on the roads clearly show the pottery characteristics of this village. The red brick road also contributes to embellishing a bit more ancient and special for Thanh Ha pottery village.
3. Learn The Stages Of Making Pottery From Artisans
Visiting the village, in addition to freely choosing ceramic souvenir products. I also witnessed with my own eyes the skillful manipulations of the skillful hands of ceramic artists. Through the hands of skilled craftsmen, with long experience, lifeless clay blocks suddenly transformed into wonderful works.
I learned more about the production method and observed firsthand the pottery making stages of the artisans here. Creating a ceramic object must go through many stages. Initially, the clay must remove impurities very carefully and then knead it evenly and smoothly. Next, the clay is put on the turntable to shape the product. After completing the product forming stages. The products will be dried and then put into the kiln. The product after being fired will have the typical red brick color of Thanh Ha pottery village. All these steps are completely handmade.
The pottery here is not just an ordinary object but it contains the affection, enthusiasm and effort of the potters.
4. Hand-made Pottery Experience
The most special thing that I like the most and also the reason when visiting Thanh Ha pottery village is to experience making pottery for myself. I personally created ceramic utensils according to my taste. This is my first time making pottery by hand, the clay is really soft and I chose for myself 2 items: a cups and a vase. Under the guidance of a cute and enthusiastic potter, after about 15 minutes of kneading and shaping with clay, my beautiful little glass and vase were also completed.
After shaping with clay on the turntable, I have to take my product out in the sun to dry and then the shop owner will bring it to fire, the whole process requires ingenuity and care to not make warped item. I leave my address to her and in about 2-3 days I will receive my finished product.
Tadaa... And here are the 2 ceramics that I made, although it's not as perfect as the ones created by the artisans, but it's so beautiful to me. It's not the most perfect but it's the only one 😊. I put my heart and soul into it.
There is nothing more interesting than visiting a long-standing traditional craft village and also making your own small and beautiful products that you love. Besides, when you come to Thanh Ha pottery village, you can freely choose to buy yourself ceramic products created by skilled artisans, or you can also make ceramic items yourself and bring home. As a gift, everyone will definitely love this special gift.
If you also want to create for yourself a one-of-a-kind ceramic item, don't miss Thanh Ha Pottery Village - Hoi An!
