Yesterday I shared my experience during my visit to the Red Lake. If you missed it, you can still read about it here -> One Wet Day At Lacul Rosu And Bicaz George. I wanted to cover our restaurant visit as well, but the post got too long and did not want to make it longer. So today is the day to share my review of the Oxygen Resto.
How To Get There
The address of the restaurant is Dn 12C, Gheorgheni 535500 Romania. It is on the road between Gheorgheni and Lacul Roșu. The only way to get there is by car.
There's a big parking lot available in front of the restaurant, so no worries.
The truth is, we planned to have late lunch or dinner at the Basa Fogadó at Borzont, because we knew the food is excellent, but I spoke to them on the phone and was told, tables will only be available after 7pm, which was too late for us. This is why we stopped at the Oxygen Resto, which was on our way, next to the road.
The Restaurant
The restaurant is quite spacious, it's a modern construction taking advantage of the gorgeous view of the valley, through the huge glass windows. There are individual tables of six and long tables for groups as well. There's a terrace in front of the restaurant, where you can admire the view while eating, if the weather permits.
Serving is done by the customers. It's kind of self serving, except for the drinks. You get a tray, go to the food counter, pick what you want and pay. There's a QR code in the table as well, which leads you to the online menu of the restaurant, so you can see what's on the menu and how much the menu costs.
What was interesting was this tray cover. It's a paper with reviews left by customers. There was one in English, from a guy from Martinique, but there was a Spanish review as well.) Also has the contact details of the restaurant, along with a space for your review if you like to leave one for them. It's a good idea, original I suppose, but at the end of the day, the choice of which one to print on the paper is the owner's or of the management, so ... you know.
We got there Saturday at around 5pm and even though the food looked good at first glance, the offer was kind of weak, compared to their online menu, which leads me to believe, the rest was already sold out.
There were 4 traditional soups available, with sour cream and hot pepper, if you wanted.
What you see on this tray is tripe soup, beef shank with French fries and cabbage salad.
Same soup, ribs and French fries, plus hot pepper for the soup.
This was mine, tripe soup, sour cream, grilled chicken with French fries and cabbage salad. At first glance it looked good and was really hungry, but the soup was not so great. I wasn't the only one who did not like the soup, the other two had the same opinion. It wasn't bad but it wasn't what I was hoping for either.
I said, never mind, I still have the main course. It's just that the French fries were cold (everyone's French fries was cold by the way), and the chicken was undercooked, or rare, not even medium, which would have not been ideal either, as it should have been well done. There was blood coming out of the meat when I got close to the bone.
At that point I had enough, stood up, picked the plate up and took it back. After 5 minutes, i got an apology and a new dish. This time the French fries were hot and the chicken was well done. It was good but I already lost my appetite.
Now you can say I'm picky (which is not true by the way), but the truth is, half of the team was not satisfied with the food.
There were some desserts too, among which the famous tiramisu and the local favorite, the Somlói galuska. Translate to English would mean Somlói dumplings, where Somló is a 431 meter high volcanic mountain. What you see here is tiramisu. I did not order dessert as these are not my favorites.
All in all, the place is nice, the view is gorgeous (I did not take more photos as it was raining), but the food was not what I was expecting, so next time we well definitely pick a different place.

Thank you for sharing. This place is truly remarkable.
I remember seeing this restaurant last year when I visited The Red Lake and Bicaz Gorges but it was in the middle of the summer and there was no empty room for us. So we simply bought some famous langos & kurtos and called it a day in terms of taking lunch between our journeys, lol :D
Maybe it was better. Who knows what the food would have been like back then. At least the kürtöskalács and the lángos is mostly good 😎
The view looks like it might be great and would make for a nice place to have a meal. At first glance your meals looked really yummy, but after you described how everything was cold or undercooked, it leads me to believe they may rely on their location a little too much. I wish the food would have been better for you so you could have had a more enjoyable experience. Thanks for sharing.
You're not wrong there Joe. They rely on the view and on the fact that there are not that many restaurants on the road. When you see the place, you automatically step on the break as who can say no to such a view. But when the food is bad, you don't go there a second time. When I saw the food, I said "this can only be good". Was I wrong? I was, big time. What I don't understand is how can they serve cold French fries, when those food counters are made to be heated from below? Anyway, it was a good lesson.
Thanks for stopping by Joe, I hope life treats you well :)
Nice view and seems like a great location for that. A huge bummer things were cold and under cooked. Well I hope for the resto sakes this was a rare occasion but I'm the same as you if I experience something like that I'm almost certainly not returning.
It is indeed the best location for a restaurant along the road, between two places. What I don't understand is how can they afford to serve bad food and lose customers as a result, with such an investment. Maybe the owner has no idea. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't let myself fooled for the second time.
Nice place.
Indeed, the place is nice, there was nothing wrong with it.

Wow! I like the meals. They may be sumptuous.
If you would have read my post, you would know that it wasn't.
Hi @erikah! Excellent choice for lunch, it's a very nice restaurant and all the dishes look delicious. Thanks for sharing
Actually it was the worst choice as the food was bad.
Wow, what an impression! Looks can be deceiving, from the pictures they appeared to be tasty.
How are you dear friend @erikah good day
It's a pity that they couldn't find tables in the place where they had planned to have dinner, but it's good that they found this beautiful place, I love the large space in the room and the view from its windows.
Excellent choice of food, I love the fries, the beef leg and the grilled chicken thigh, although I must say that all the dishes look delicious, and I am sorry that it was not what you expected.
It's not about what I expected, it's about the food not being edible. When you go to a restaurant the first time, you obviously don't know what to expect as each place is different. But there's a norm, for safety, that says you don't serve half cooked meals.
You are very right, when I said "it was not what I expected" it was just an expression to summarize all the bad things and the bad situation they had to go through when they received the undercooked dishes; It is evident that the place lacks a person responsible for controlling the general quality of the dishes they sell.
I am very sorry for the bad experiences you had to go through in ¨Oxygen¨¨Resto¨
soo beautiful restaurant, delicious food, looks really cool 😎
hope you enjoying a lot
Your comment proves you did not read my post.
I read your post is very interesting and I enjoyed your photography of food👌
Then you did not understand what I wrote.
Greetings! Too bad to have that experience with the food, I think the cold fries could be forgiven, but definitely not the raw chicken, besides being unpleasant because of the blood it gives a lot to say about the place.
A while ago I ate with family at a place where they sell rotisserie chicken and it was in that condition, there weren't even many people and it still came raw. For me it took away my hunger :(
You accomplished the full mission in Romania,by experimenting places, traditions and food. What a better method to understand a country as a tourist. I saw you were going to stay for more time in Romania and i can't help but keep recommending visiting the south-west of the country near the Serbian border(Turnu severin(with Trajan's bridge),baile herculane, decebalus statue and danube boilers).it a hidden gem in Romania not many know about it.
Thanks so much for sharing @erikah
