Hello travelers! It has been two months since @altheana and I moved into our new home, and we still haven't taken the time to explore the surroundings.
So, let’s fix that! Today, I’m taking you to Conches-en-Ouche, a small French town located in Normandy.
We parked the car in the park square, where a small local farmers' market takes place every Thursday morning. There are also a few stands offering products from further away, but they are in the minority.
The town of Conches-en-Ouche is crossed by a main road, perpendicular to the street where this photo was taken. I love the charm of Norman houses, which retain a slight medieval air.
It is a rural town experiencing demographic growth. New homes are being built, which slightly diminishes its charm, and that’s unfortunate... But on the other hand, new residents need housing. Without it, this small town might empty out.
Conches-en-Ouche is not a tourist town. There are a few sights to see, but I wouldn’t recommend crossing France, Europe, or the world to visit—unless you have a particular fondness for VERY peaceful countryside towns.
However, the charm is there. The small shops along the main street surely help preserve this authentic atmosphere.
The church is interesting. At the entrance, a small sign asks for donations. Since the 1999 storm (which left a mark on France), it has suffered a lot. Part of the roof has been redone, but there is still much work to be done.
We truly began to enjoy the walk as we passed behind the church and discovered a stunning view.
The house with its tower is simply magnificent!
As we leaned in to take in the view, we spotted a small castle just a few minutes' walk away. We knew there was one in the area, but we had never taken the time to visit it.
To get there, you have to walk through the town hall garden. The ruins of the castle can be seen on the right.
The town hall garden is very well maintained, and everything is designed to make the visit visually pleasing. Not far from the entrance, this statue catches the eye… but no sign explains what it represents.
Two possibilities:
- A sandworm larva from Dune?
- A simple work of art?
Further along, this massive fir tree. This time, there was a sign. It stated the tree’s age: about 400 years.
I wish trees could talk. Maybe they already do, and we just don’t know how to listen?
Across from the fir tree stand the ruins of the castle. Castle which is actually a dungeon. The entrance is prohibited due to falling stones. What a shame! A paid visit could help finance its upkeep.
A trail is still planned to go around it. It is actually quite well maintained while remaining natural.
In the foreground of this photo, do you see the plants with white tips? My mother had already told me about them. I’ve forgotten their name, but they are perfect for wild basket weaving. If I ever get into this craft, I’ll know where to find them.
For this photo, I had to push my phone to its limits. But if you focus well, you can see a roe deer. Hint: its backside is white.
As we left the town hall garden, we had a stunning view of the church’s new roof. There is also a marked hiking trail, which we decided to take.
And luckily, we followed the hiking trail. It would have been a shame to miss this place. It’s a beautiful botanical garden. I can't wait for spring to be fully settled so I can return.
The Norman house you see in the last photo is a museum. It was closed at this time of day, but we are already planning to return to see what it’s about. Apparently, it's free. We didn’t look it up online to avoid spoiling the surprise.
Conches-en-Ouche remains a small rural town where it is pleasant to take a walk. I believe the best way to keep it lively is to explore the many small restaurants on the main street, visit the shops, and go to the market on Thursday mornings as often as possible to help maintain it as a vibrant place.

Bonjour les voyageurs ! Cela fait deux mois qu'avec @altheana, nous avons emménagé dans notre nouveau logement, et nous n'avons toujours pas pris le temps d'explorer les environs.
Alors, réglons ce petit problème ! Aujourd’hui, je vous emmène à Conches-en-Ouche, une petite commune française située en Normandie.
Nous avons laissé la voiture sur la place du parc, où se tient un petit marché de producteurs locaux chaque jeudi matin. Il y a aussi quelques stands proposant des produits venus de plus loin, mais ce n'est vraiment pas la majorité.
La ville de Conches-en-Ouche est traversée par une route principale, perpendiculaire à la rue où a été prise cette photo. J’aime le charme des maisons normandes, qui conservent un petit air médiéval.
C’est une ville rurale en pleine croissance démographique. De nouvelles habitations y voient le jour, ce qui casse un peu son charme, et c'est dommage... Mais d’un autre côté, il faut bien loger les nouveaux habitants. Sans ça, cette petite ville risquerait de se vider.
Conches-en-Ouche n’est pas une ville touristique. Il y a bien quelques curiosités à voir, mais je ne conseillerais pas de traverser la France, l’Europe ou le monde pour s’y rendre, sauf si vous appréciez particulièrement les petites villes de campagne TRES paisibles.
En revanche, le charme est là. Les petits commerces de la rue principale participent sûrement à préserver cette atmosphère authentique.
L’église est intéressante. À l’entrée, un petit panneau appelle aux dons. Depuis la tempête de 1999 (qui a marqué la France), elle a beaucoup souffert. La toiture a été refaite en partie, mais il reste encore beaucoup de travaux à entreprendre.
Nous avons vraiment commencé à apprécier la balade en passant derrière l’église, où nous avons découvert une vue splendide.
La maison avec son donjon est tout simplement magnifique !
En nous penchant pour observer la vue, nous avons aperçu un petit château, à seulement quelques minutes à pied. Nous savions qu’il y en avait un dans le coin, mais nous n’avions jamais pris le temps d’y aller.
Pour s’y rendre, il faut traverser le jardin de la mairie. On y trouve les ruines du château, visibles sur la droite.
Le jardin de la mairie est vraiment bien entretenu et tout est pensé pour rendre la visite plaisante pour les yeux. Non loin de l’entrée, cette statue attire l’attention… mais aucun panneau n’indique ce qu’elle représente.
Deux solutions :
- Une larve de ver des sables dans Dune ?
- Une simple œuvre d'art ?
Et un peu plus loin, cet immense sapin. Cette fois-ci, il y avait un panneau. Ce dernier indiquait notamment l'âge de l'arbre : environ 400 ans.
J’aimerais tant que les arbres puissent parler. Peut-être qu’ils le font déjà, mais que nous ne savons pas écouter ?
En face du sapin, se dressent les ruines du château. Château qui est finalement un donjon. L'entrée y est interdite à cause des chutes de pierres. Dommage ! Il serait intéressant d’en faire une visite payante pour financer son entretien.
Un sentier est tout de même prévu pour en faire le tour. Il est d'ailleurs assez bien entretenu, tout en restant naturel.
Au premier plan de cette photo, vous voyez les plantes avec les bouts blancs ? Ma mère m'en avait déjà parlé. J'en ai perdu son nom, mais elle est parfaite pour faire de la vannerie sauvage. Si un jour je me lance dans cette activité, je saurais où chercher.
Pour cette photo, il a fallu que je pousse mon téléphone dans ses retranchements. Mais si vous vous concentrez bien, vous pourrez voir une chevreuil. Indice, son derrière est blanc.
En sortant du jardin de la mairie, nous avions une vue imprenable sur la nouvelle toiture de l'Eglise. Il y a aussi un chemin balisé pour les randonnée que nous avons décidé d'emprunter.
Et heureusement que nous suivi le sentier de randonnée. Car ça aurait bête de louper cet endroit. C'est un magnifique jardin botanique. J'ai hâte que le printemps soit définitivement installé pour y retourner.
La maison normande que vous voyez sur la dernière photo est un musée. Il était fermé à cette heure de la journée. Mais nous prévoyons déjà d'y retourner pour voir de quoi il s'agit. A priori il est gratuit. Nous n'avons pas cherché à en savoir plus en regardant sur Internet pour éviter de nous gâcher la surprise.
Conches-en-Ouche reste une petite ville rurale où il est agréable de se balader. Je pense que la meilleure façon de la faire vivre est de découvrir les nombreux petits restaurants dans la rue principale, les boutiques et d'aller, autant que possible, au marché le jeudi matin afin de continuer d'en faire un lieu de vie.
