Monsaraz a picturesque, medieval village of the Alentejo region of Portugal. It is perched on top of a hill overlooking the Guadiana Valley.
Monsaraz is often spoken as one of the most picturesque villages in Portugal.
Winding cobbled streets the quaint pristine white-washed homes reflecting the heat of the day. The Alentejo region is often referred to by the Portuguese as ‘the land that time forgot’.
Monsaraz Castle. Built in the 14th century, is classified as a National Monument of Portugal.
Its military functions stopped, in the mid 19thC, the old Praça de Armas (formation ground) started to be used as a bullfighting ring. Today, it serves as a setting for cultural and religious festivities.
"In the late 70's, a group of amateur and professional photographers, photographed the County of Reguengos de Monsaraz with the intention of participating in a photo contest, promoted by the City Hall. The result of this photographic tour was an unparalleled collection of photographs, black and white, about our people, our villages and our vast cultural and architectural heritage."
"We selected those that were photographed in Monsaraz, the ones that prove how different (or not) this medieval village was in a recent past."
I did my best to replicate the shots during my time here.
