Cuando visité La Habana por primera vez, allá por los años 90, el lugar que más me impresionó fue el Hotel Nacional. Recuerdo que me recogieron en un auto Lada en el aeropuerto y, cuando íbamos rumbo al municipio Regla, pasamos frente al hotel. En cuanto lo vi, quedé boquiabierta y saqué la cabeza por la ventana.
—Guajira, entra la cabeza, la gente va a saber que llegaste de Oriente—
Fueron las palabras de mi prima. A mí no me importó y seguí mirando hasta que lo perdí en la distancia.
Aquel edificio majestuoso causó gran impresión en mí. Su arquitectura neoclásica y morisca, que lo hace parecer un castillo, rompe con el entorno de la zona, donde hay otros edificios más modernos.
Y allí está, en su colina, como centinela, como anfitrión que recibe a los barcos que entran a la bahía, frente al Malecón, justo donde termina la famosa Rampa. El Hotel Nacional, de cinco estrellas, es el hotel insignia de Cuba. Fue inaugurado el 30 de diciembre de 1930 y representa la excelencia y la exquisitez en los servicios de nuestro país. Su imponente estructura y ubicación en una zona elevada lo hacen visible, y jamás pasa inadvertido.
Cuenta con diferentes restaurantes y bares, estos últimos famosos por su mojito y su daiquirí. Entre ellos se destaca el Bar Mirando al Golfo, llamado popularmente Salón de la Fama. En él se pueden apreciar, a lo largo y ancho de todas las paredes, imágenes de las personalidades nacionales y extranjeras que han pasado por allí, tales como: Beny Moré, Rita Montaner, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Sarita Montiel, Errol Flynn, Johnny Weissmuller, Mick Jagger, Beyoncé, Nat King Cole, Winston Churchill, entre otros.
Desde 1998 es Patrimonio Nacional, y en 2001 fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Durante muchos años, este hotel ha sido anfitrión de importantes eventos y sucesos. Uno de los que más ha resonado a través de la historia fue, sin duda, la Conferencia de la Mafia en 1946, conocida como la "Reunión de La Habana", con la presencia de Lucky Luciano y Meyer Lansky.
El hotel cuenta con jardines famosos por su belleza, y en sus patios se pueden ver varios cañones que sirvieron, en su momento, como defensa de la ciudad. Cada año, en el mes de diciembre, en sus patios y jardines se observan muchos de los invitados al Festival Internacional de Cine Latinoamericano, algunos de ellos dando entrevistas y participando en conversatorios con participantes y periodistas.
Les debo las fotos de las piscinas, habitaciones y restaurantes. Esas las postearé algún día, si logro hospedarme. La invitación está hecha para todo el que pueda y desee disfrutar de un pedazo del cielo en la tierra.
Por mi parte, cada vez que ando por el Vedado, no pierdo la oportunidad de llegar hasta allí y sentarme en su patio para disfrutar de la brisa, de la vista al mar y, por qué no, de un buen café o una malta. El Hotel Nacional de Cuba seguirá ahí, mirando al mar, como quien abre sus brazos al mundo.

When I first visited Havana back in the 90s, the place that impressed me the most was the Hotel Nacional. I remember being picked up at the airport in a Lada car, and as we headed toward the municipality of Regla, we passed by the hotel. As soon as I saw it, I was awestruck and stuck my head out the window.
—Guajira, pull your head in, people will know you’re from Oriente—
Those were my cousin’s words. I didn’t care and kept staring until it disappeared in the distance.
That majestic building left a lasting impression on me. Its neoclassical and Moorish architecture, which makes it look like a castle, stands out from the surrounding area, where other more modern buildings are located.
And there it stands, on its hill, like a sentinel, like a host welcoming the ships entering the bay, facing the Malecón, right where the famous Rampa ends. The five-star Hotel Nacional is Cuba’s flagship hotel. It was inaugurated on December 30, 1930, and represents excellence and sophistication in our country’s hospitality services. Its imposing structure and elevated location make it highly visible, and it never goes unnoticed.
It features various restaurants and bars, the latter famous for their mojitos and daiquiris. Among them, the Bar Mirando al Golfo stands out, popularly known as the Hall of Fame. The hotel boasts gardens famous for their beauty, and in its courtyards, you can see several cannons that once served as part of the city’s defense. Every year in December, many guests attending the International Festival of Latin American Cinema can be seen in its courtyards and gardens, some giving interviews or participating in discussions with attendees and journalists.
I owe you photos of the pools, rooms, and restaurants. I’ll post those someday if I manage to stay there. The invitation is open to anyone who can and wishes to enjoy a piece of heaven on earth.
As for me, whenever I’m in Vedado, I never miss the chance to visit and sit in its courtyard to enjoy the breeze, the sea view, and why not, a good coffee or a malt drink. The Hotel Nacional de Cuba will always be there, gazing at the sea, as if opening its arms to the world.
