Hello Hive!!
Today I come to share with you my experience in Vietnam, more specifically in its capital, Hanoi.
I arrived in Hanoi from Singapore, on a trip that also involved visiting Cambodia (which I already told you about in a previous post) and visiting Thailand.
To enter Vietnam you need a visa, you can purchase it in advance online or upon arrival at the airport. Here, the visa price is higher than in Cambodia, the price is around 85 dollars and it allows you to stay on Vietnamese soil for 30 days.
The airport is a considerable distance from the city center, so I recommend that you book a means of transport, as the journey takes around 45 minutes.
We drove to our hotel, where we quickly checked in so we could explore the city. From the first impression we saw that although it wasn't cold, the weather was gray and a little rainy, which is normal in this city. During the time we were there, we were forced to buy a waterproof jacket because several times we were caught by surprise with unexpected rain.
For me, Hanoi was one of the cities that had the greatest impact on my visit to Asia. This is because between the city's chaotic traffic, with scooters everywhere and street vendors sitting on the ground cutting meat, it was something I had never seen before.
And with this I can tell you that life in Hanoi is in the streets. As you walk through the labyrinth of the old quarter there will be vendors selling everything from fruit to meat; how they will shake every time they have to cross a street with hundreds of scooters going in all directions. Every time we had to cross a road we would jokingly shout, “live at risk!”. I can even recommend that it is safer to cross slowly than quickly as cars and scooters will not stop, they will just move aside and the more predictable you are, the safer it is.
The Old Quarter is one of the oldest areas of the city and a perfect representation of Vietnamese daily life. Its narrow, multi-story houses seem strange to us, but later they explained to us that the government charged fees for the amount of land occupied. So, people preferred to make houses taller, but narrower. Nothing is by chance.
A stopping point is train street. Can you imagine a train crossing a street full of shops and people? Well, that's what happens here.
The city has a legacy left by French colonialism as they built several buildings in the city that scream their style, namely the use of decorative elements and large windows.
Located in the heart of the old quarter, we have St Joseph's Cathedral, which is one of the city's landmarks and one of the clear examples of the French presence.
The front of the church, built in a neo-Gothic style, somewhat imitates its cousin so well known worldwide, the Church of Notre Dame.
Now let me tell you if the city is chaos, it is in complete contrast to Hoan Kiem Lake. Here you can find a serenity and peace that convinces you to sit back and enjoy the moment. There is a legend associated with this lake, that an emperor had received a sword from a dragon to fight the enemy and after winning, a turtle appeared in the lake to take the sword back.
On an island in the middle of the lake you will find the Ngoc Son Temple which, in addition to its religious importance, is a mandatory stop for anyone visiting the city. Access to the temple is via a red bridge, where everyone stops to take a look, such is its beauty. The temple has a simple Vietnamese style but rich in mythological ornaments such as dragons or turtles.
You can also visit Tran Quoc Pagoda with it imposing red tower.
For another post, I will share with you my experience with Vietnamese food, which deserves to be talked about exclusively.
