Mercado de San Telmo, with nearly 130 years of history.
The Mercado de San Telmo is one of those places that’s definitely worth visiting in Buenos Aires. Surprisingly, I had never been there before. It's one of the few places in the city I haven’t explored much over the years I’ve been here, and it’s precisely San Telmo. It has so much history and its own personality that makes you feel like you’re in another time, but it's also very contemporary, and that’s when I start to understand why so many people from all over the world visit it.
When you arrive, you realize that the market is huge and full of things to see. Right from the start, you can find all kinds of products: fruits, vegetables, meats, and much more. What’s most interesting is that at the back of the market, almost like a little world of its own, there’s a food fair that has everything. The amazing thing about this fair is that not only can you find typical Argentine food, but you can also try dishes from all around the world. From sushi to tacos, French food, Swiss dishes, or Italian pizza. It’s a perfect plan for those who love variety and international flavors, or simply want to try new things.
One of the most beautiful things I saw at the market is that they sell antiques. I felt like I was looking at a photograph of the past just by observing all those antiques.
There was a shop, run by a very friendly guy, that had books at super cheap prices. I saw books of all kinds, from classic novels to comics, old magazines from Argentina, etc. And the best part was that there were tons of Mafalda products. If you don’t know who Mafalda is, she’s a beloved character in Argentina, created by the legendary Quino. Tourists love Mafalda, and they’re always lining up to take pictures with any Mafalda statue.
As I explored, I kept being more and more surprised by how well-preserved the place is, considering that the market is nearly 130 years old. It’s incredible to think that such an old space is still so vibrant and full of life. The walls, the ceiling, the structures… everything is in pretty good condition.
In summary, the Mercado de San Telmo is not just a place to shop, but a place to immerse yourself in the history, culture, and gastronomy of Buenos Aires. If you get the chance to visit, I highly recommend you take your time to explore it slowly and enjoy everything it has to offer. It’s a place that will surprise you. And don’t worry if you’re on a tight budget, I didn’t spend a single peso and still had a great time.
