When you say you are going to visit the north of Argentina, one of the provinces you can't miss is Salta. My country is full of beautiful places, and Salta brings quite a few of them to the list. With a quite extensive territory, you need several days to visit the most beautiful corners of this area. Unfortunately, my planned stay in this province at the time was only two days, so I was willing to settle for whatever beautiful scenery I could see there. Luckily, I was able to do much more than I expected, as I had the opportunity to do a round trip of more than 300 km in which we saw several things that surprised me, such as the La Polvorilla Viaduct, which I had never seen before 😃.
Cuando uno dice que va a visitar el norte de Argentina, una de las provincias que no puede faltar es Salta. Mi país está lleno de lugares hermosos, y Salta aporta bastantes de ellos a la lista. Con un territorio bastante extenso, necesitas varios días para recorrer los rincones más hermosos de esta zona. Lamentablemente, mi estadía planificada en esta provincia en ese momento era solo de dos días, así que estaba dispuesta a conformarme con cualquier paisaje lindo que pudiera ver ahí. Por suerte, pude hacer mucho más de lo que esperaba, ya que tuve la oportunidad de hacer un tramo de ida y vuelta de más de 300 km en los que vimos varias cosas que me sorprendieron, como el Viaducto La Polvorilla el cual no conocía 😃.
As part of an impulsive but somewhat romantic plan, I decided to use my two days off work at the hostel to take a trip to Salta with a guest I had met a few days before. I had visited the capital some three years before, but had only been in the surrounding area of the city. This time, our trip would be by car, so we were going to be able to go a bit further afield. My occasional companion likes driving a lot, so we arranged to drive to San Antonio de los Cobres, about 180 km from where we were staying 😃.
Como parte de un impulsivo pero un poco romántico plan, decidí destinar mis dos días libres de trabajo en el hostel para hacer una escapada hasta Salta capital con un huésped que había conocido unos días atrás. Yo ya había visitado la capital unos tres años antes, pero solo había estado en los alrededores de la ciudad. Esta vez, nuestro paseo sería en auto por lo que íbamos a poder ir un poco más lejos. A mi acompañante ocasional le gusta mucho manejar, así que organizamos para ir hasta San Antonio de los Cobres, a unos 180 km desde donde nos habíamos alojado 😃.
To get there we take National Route 51, one that is located between beautiful orange mountains. All the way there we were surrounded by the beautiful and rather dry landscapes that characterise this province. There were only a few small gravel roads, but most of it was in very good condition. This part of my country is already quite high, so halfway through our journey we crossed a mountain pass at 4080 masl. This high place called Abra Blanca was no problem for the small Suzuki 4x4 we were travelling in 😃.
Para ir hasta allá tomamos la Ruta Nacional 51, una que está ubicada entre montañas hermosas y anaranjadas. Todo el camino que hicimos estuvo rodeado de unos paisajes hermosos y bastante secos, los que caracterizan a esta provincia. Solo nos cruzamos unas pequeñas partes de ripio, pero la mayoría fue ruta en muy buen estado. Esta parte de mi país ya tiene bastante altura, por lo que a mitad de nuestro camino atravesamos un paso de montaña de 4080 msnm. Este lugar tan alto llamado Abra Blanca no fue ningún problema para el pequeño Suzuki 4x4 en el que viajabamos 😃.
We had already spent a long time in the car without seeing almost no people or villages, until almost 100 km after the mountain pass we reached the village of San Antonio de Los Cobres. The whole distance from the capital to there made me realise how remote this place is. This village, which looked totally dry and almost without vegetation, is located at 3700 masl, which makes it even more special. We didn't stop there because it was taking longer than we thought, but we had a good panoramic view from the road 😃.
Ya habíamos pasado bastante tiempo arriba del auto sin ver casi nada de gente o pueblos, hasta que casi 100 km después del paso de montaña llegamos hasta el pueblo de San Antonio de Los Cobres. Toda la distancia que hicimos desde la capital hasta ahí me hizo dar cuenta de lo remoto que es ese lugar. Este pueblo, que se veía totalmente seco y casi sin vegetación se encuentra a 3700 msnm, lo que lo hace todavía más especial. No nos detuvimos ahí porque estábamos tardando más de lo que pensamos, pero pudimos tener una buena vista panorámica desde la ruta 😃.
What we definitely wanted to see, and that's why we rushed, was the famous La Polvorilla viaduct. As I don't like to see any photos of the places I go to, I didn't know what it was about, but as we got closer to it, I realised what it was. This viaduct is a very touristic point in the province of Salta because the Tren de las Nubes (Train to the Clouds) passes through it 😃.
Lo que definitivamente queríamos ver y por eso nos apuramos, fue el famoso viaducto La Polvorilla. Como a mi no me gusta ver nada de fotos de los lugares a los que voy, no sabía de qué se trataba pero a medida que fuimos acercándonos hasta él, ya me dí cuenta de que lo que era. Este viaducto es un punto muy turístico en la provincia de Salta porque por el pasa nada más y nada menos que el Tren de las Nubes 😃.
The road that took us from San Antonio de Los Cobres to the viaduct was more than 15 km of gravel in pretty bad condition. So far we had had a smooth ride, but on that part of the road we had to deflate the tyres a bit because the little car was shaking too much. The sun was already beating down and we wanted to get there fast to have a good view in the light, but at the same time we couldn't speed up that much on such a road. We had to take it easy 😅.
El camino que nos llevó desde San Antonio de Los Cobres hasta el viaducto fue de más de 15 km de ripio en bastante mal estado. Hasta el momento habíamos tenido un paseo tranquilo, pero en esa parte del camino tuvimos que desinflar un poco las ruedas porque el pequeño autito se sacudía demasiado. El sol ya estaba cayendo y queríamos llegar rápido para tener una buena vista con luz, pero al mismo tiempo no podíamos acelerar tanto en una calle así. Tuvimos que tomarnoslo con calma 😅.
To reach the foot of this viaduct was quite incredible. This stretch of track connects two mountains, with a length of 200 metres and a height of 60 metres. The tourist train ride starts from the village and runs for about 20 km, being one of the highest trains in the world at 4220 metres above sea level. From that point you had the possibility to climb a difference in height of about 20 metres to reach the height of the tracks. From the bottom it looked like very little and although I have a lot of stamina to climb mountains at the moment, that little 15 minute stretch made my head hurt like never before 😅.
Llegar al pie de este viaducto era algo muy increíble. Este tramo de vías logra unir dos montañas, con una longitud de 200 metros y una altura de 60 metros. El paseo turístico en tren empieza desde el pueblo y recorre unos 20 km, siendo uno de los trenes más altos del mundo a 4220 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Desde ese punto tenías la posibilidad de subir un desnivel de unos 20 metros hasta llegar a la altura de las vías. Desde abajo se veía como poco y aunque en este momento tengo mucha resistencia para subir montañas, ese pequeño tramo de 15 minutos me hizo doler la cabeza como nunca 😅.
Travelling on the Tren de las Nubes is one of the classic excursions to do if you are in the province of Salta. The only ‘drawback’ is that travelling on this train is, in my opinion, ridiculously expensive. The ticket for foreigners costs 120 USD, while for Argentine residents it is 95 USD, pensioners 80 USD and children 70 USD. Paying that price for a ride that only lasts an hour doesn't sound that attractive, although there are many people who pay for it every day and tickets are sold out. At least I wouldn't pay it, and you? 😅.
Viajar en el Tren de las Nubes es una de las excursiones clásicas para hacer si estas de paseo en la provincia de Salta. El único "impedimento" es que viajar en este tren es, en mi opinión, ridículamente caro. El ticket para extranjeros cuesta 120 USD, mientras que para residentes argentinos es de 95 USD, jubilados 80 USD y niños 70 USD. Pagar ese precio por un paseo que solo dura una hora no suena tan atractivo, aunque hay mucha gente que lo paga cada día y hasta se agotan las entradas. Al menos yo no lo pagaría, ¿y ustedes? 😅.
What I do not deny at all is that this work of engineering is absolutely marvellous and worth a visit if you have a car, even if you don't get on the train. The viewpoint also has beautiful views, even if the short climb takes your breath away. All the surroundings until you get there are also beautiful: on the way there you can also visit an abandoned quarry, where you can appreciate and become aware of how the landscape has been modified by mining. All very interesting indeed 🙂.
Lo que no niego para nada es que esta obra de ingeniería es absolutamente maravillosa y vale la pena visitarla si tenes auto, por más que no subas al tren. El mirador también tiene vistas muy hermosas, aunque te quite el aire la pequeña subida. Todos los alrededores hasta llegar ahí también son hermosos: en el camino también se puede visitar una cantera abandonada, en donde se aprecia y se toma consciencia de la modificación de los paisajes con la explotación minera. Todo muy interesante en verdad 🙂.
We were almost out of sunlight, but after being in the car most of the day, we wanted to be outside as much as possible. I loved doing this ride and with such fun company. The guest ‘M’ and I had known each other less than a week, but we got along as if we had been friends for a long time. I didn't want to go back because my getaway ended the next day and I had to go back to work, but I still enjoyed every minute of it. It inevitably got dark on the road and being in such a remote place, we took a moment to stop and look at the starry sky. That sky with the milky way printed on it was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen and I keep it as a memory of one of the most worthwhile rides of the whole trip ❣️.
Ya casi nos quedábamos sin luz del sol, pero después de estar casi todo el día arriba del auto, queríamos estar afuera lo máximo posible. Me encantó hacer este paseo y con una compañía muy divertida. El huésped "M" y yo nos conocíamos hacía menos de una semana, pero nos llevábamos bien como si hubiésemos sido amigos desde hace mucho tiempo. Yo no quería volver porque mi escapada terminaba al otro día y tenía que volver a trabajar, pero igualmente disfruté cada minuto. Indefectiblemente se nos hizo de noche en la ruta y al estar en un lugar tan alejado, nos tomamos un momento para parar y salir a ver el cielo estrellado. Ese cielo con la vía láctea impresa en él fue de los más hermosos que vi y lo guardo como recuerdo de uno de los paseos que más valieron la pena dentro de todo este viaje ❣️.

Conque así se ve ese pueblo remoto que es conocido como la provincia del sol abrasador, San Antonio de los Cobres, Salta
El famoso Viaducto La Polvorilla es sin duda imponente, una construcción majestuosa y poderosa para los trenes. Creo que no existe ninguna otra igual.
Aunque sea una maravilla de argentina, subir en el Tren de las Nubes 120 USD es un alto precio por una experiencia, uff, no lo sé, tal vez si tuviera unos miles de dólares en mi bolcillo me subiría unas 5 o 6 veces.

hace varios años viaje a ese lugar en el tren desde salta capital, fue en pleno invierno y el frio fue bastante fuerte igual fue una gran aventura :D

El paseo en ese tren también me parece costoso, claro que yo no sé los costos de mantenimiento. No podría tener una visión completa, pero como turista yo buscaría un recorrido un poco más solidario.
Esta salida fue muy bonita, lo que noto mucho es que con muchos más árboles el lugar me parecería más genial.
