Argentina - A bit of trekking to get the best views of Lácar Lake and the city of San Martín de Los Andes. 😃❤️

The city of San Martín de Los Andes in the province of Neuquén is one of those cities that always makes you want to visit. Its location is very privileged: on the shores of Lake Lácar and surrounded by mountains, this city in the south of Argentina has everything you need for a good few days of travelling. Although it is already quite urbanised, it still retains its small-town feel because everything is close at hand. In my opinion, it has the best of both worlds: a bit of the city for the classic and social plan, and also nature to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life ❤️.

The first stop of our 21-day motorhome trip was in the city of San Martin de Los Andes. This was the third time I visited this city, but I could never get bored of such beautiful landscapes. We were lucky enough to find a free car park by the lake, so every morning we had the best view of everything. This location was also key for us because we had the bus terminal one block away, where we could use the bathroom, and we were also at the entrance of the most classic trekking trails in the area ❤️.

Among the classic hiking trails in San Martín de Los Andes is the path that leads to the famous ‘little island’. This trail is well signposted for tourists and I would say that it is of low/medium difficulty, although it is more of a medium difficulty. Although the trail is short (it takes less than two hours to get to the little island), the slope is quite steep, so sometimes you are forced to go slowly if you don't want to lose your breath 😅.

Doing half of this trail is free, although you won't see anything else very interesting. After that, you enter a private property owned by the families of the native peoples, for which you have to pay an entrance fee. I don't usually agree with charging for access to natural places that belong to everyone, but considering that I was on a walk and with my group of fellow travellers, we all paid without any problems. In July 2024 this ticket cost us just over $1 and with it you had access to the other half of the path to the little island, plus a viewpoint and the use of the toilets. At the toll booth there was a small grocery store where we stopped for a moment to eat some ‘tortafritas’, a dough of flour and fat fried in more fat. A rather heavy snack for a trek, but the aroma of freshly made tortafritas tempted us 😅.

The first stop we made that day was at the viewpoint, and later we continued our way to the main attraction. This viewpoint is called Mirador de la Bandurria, being the bandurrias one of the birds that can be seen the most in this area. The viewpoint had two points, one pointing towards the immensity of Lake Lácar, while on the other side you could see the city. Although I had already walked the path to the little island, I had never stopped at this viewpoint ❣️.

The panoramic views are something I love because they always make you feel small in such a big landscape. Our day for the hike was a bit grey and cloudy, but I think these places are so beautiful on their own that they don't depend so much on the sun to show them off. Some people compare San Martin de Los Andes to Kattegat, a place famous for being the setting of the Viking series. In my opinion it is quite similar, perhaps because of the location of the settlement right next to the lake and embraced by the mountains. What do you think ❤️?

When I decided to do this trip in the motorhome and saw the itinerary I already knew that I was going to visit a few repeated places for me, but that didn't matter to me because I know that there is always something more to see. I really enjoyed going to the Bandurria Viewpoint and being able to see the whole landscape from above. Another thing that was special about visiting San Martin de Los Andes this time was that it was in winter, and my two previous visits had been in summer and autumn. Maybe this will lead to a fourth trip to see what it looks like in spring: I wouldn't mind going there again at all 💕.
