One thing I really liked about the city of Esquel in Chubut was that, despite being relatively small, there was always something to do in the mountains. During my stay here, almost every day I had a plan to go for a walk and explore the surrounding area, which kept me busy and entertained. If I had to pick a favourite place, I would probably say that La Zeta Lagoon fills that spot well. This space was nice not only because of the lagoon itself, but because, besides offering services for visitors, such as a picnic area and bike rentals, it also had several walking trails nearby. All this made it a good plan for any time, and so my co-worker and I often walked there at the end of our shifts 😃.

Autumn had arrived in the city of Esquel and everything looked much more beautiful than usual. Although the nights were quite cold, the afternoons were always sunny enough to go for a walk. On one of the first times I had been to La Zeta Lagoon, I saw that there were several trails to do in the surrounding area. Most of these trails were of low difficulty, but walking from our flat we had an extra 4 km and a climb up the mountain that made the hike a bit more interesting 😅.

The first time we went to the lagoon we had listened to Google Maps and followed the vehicular route which of course was much longer. Days later, talking to local people we found out that there was a much shorter way to access the lagoon. You just had to go through the forest and climb a bit steeply, but that saved you about an hour's walk. Since we discovered that, the other times we visited the lagoon we always took that path, which by the way had beautiful views ❤️.

That day, my work colleague and I had decided to hike the trail called Del Cipresal. A week earlier we had completed a 15 km trail that had taken us to the lagoon from the other side of town, but this time we were up for something a little quieter. According to the signs, this trail was only 4 km long, so it would take us an hour or less to finish it. After staying at the lagoon for a while, we continued with our idea of a hike 😃.

The Cipresal trail shared its start with all the other trails in this area of the lagoon, but we assumed that at some point we would pass through a cypress forest, as its name indicated. One thing I probably didn't like so much about Esquel was that these trails were not as well signposted as those in other parts of southern Argentina, and most of the time you had to be guided by the tread of the road. Sometimes it worked, but sometimes it didn't 😅.

When we finally got into the forest, we came across a bunch of trails that looked just as trampled. There were even seemingly bicycle paths. It became a bit difficult to identify which one was the right one, so we just followed the one we thought it was. After a while, we were so deep in the forest that we couldn't understand anything, but we still knew which way was the La Zeta Lagoon. I wasn't worried about getting lost in this place because it wasn't that difficult to find our way to the city, so we kept walking until we saw the light and came out. To our not so good luck, we ended up bumping into a private property fence and spotted another lagoon in the distance, which we later found out was called Caradog. We never knew if that was the exact purpose of this trek, but at least it was a good view point so we sat there and had our mates with biscuits 😂.

The nice thing about places like this is that not only the final destination was beautiful, but the whole way in the meantime is beautiful as well. The surroundings of La Zeta Lagoon were always beautiful, and with all the autumn colours, they became even more so. I really liked to go for a walk there, because it was so peaceful and relaxing. I loved the fact that the city was so close to the mountains: you could get the best of both styles, and in the time I lived there I made the most of both 😃.

That lagoon reminded me a lot of the Mucubaji lagoon in Merida - Venezuela, a very similar place between mountains and forests.
True, they are similar (I googled it 😅)
