Argentina - Spending the night in a privileged corner of the Seven Lakes Route: shores of Villarino Lake. 😃❤️

Something you definitely can't miss on your journey through the south of Argentina is the famous Seven Lakes Road. This road is a section of our emblematic Route 40, which comprises the 110 km that separate the cities of San Martín de Los Andes and Villa La Angostura, in the province of Neuquén. It bears this name because on its way you can literally see seven different lakes, each one of them with the most beautiful and representative landscapes of this part of our country. On our motorhome trip we had the opportunity to spend the night in the middle of this road, where we enjoyed the Villarino Lake, the snow and its great starry sky ❤️.

After spending three nights in the town of San Martin de Los Andes, where we did some trekking and went out in the evenings, we continued on our way to the next stop. It was the sixth day of our trip and some of us had got up early to enjoy the snowy landscape. It was quite cold that day, as winter in the south of Argentina is always very cold. This was one of the experiences I wanted to experience as I have always travelled in summer to this area, and seeing it all snowed in was worth it 😃.

The seven lakes that make up this route are called Lácar (the largest in San Martín de Los Andes), Machónico, Espejo, Villarino, Falkner, Correntoso and Espejo. If you have enough time, the best tour is to stop at each one of them: all of them have a viewpoint where it is possible to park and contemplate them. I have already travelled this route in this way, stopping at each one, and it is a very good experience. But this time, our motorhome went directly to Villarino Lake and we stopped there, in an area designated for free camping 😃.

The camping area at Lago Villarino was large and had plenty of snow, something we had not yet seen since we had set out on our trip. We were very excited that morning, so we took the opportunity to go to the shore to walk around and take some pictures. The day was really cold and windy, but we had all been prepared for that, so we had plenty of warm clothes. There were even frozen puddles, from which we would later get ice to cool our alcoholic drinks 😅.

On this part of the Seven Lakes Route it is possible to see two lakes together. Connected by a small strait, Lago Villarino and Lago Falkner are connected. We only had to cross the road to see the neighbouring lake. Lake Falkner also looked blue and beautiful that morning, adorned by its large snow-capped mountains. It made me very happy to be in that place at that time, because in the summer the landscape is very different. No doubt the snow makes everything even more beautiful ❤️.

The idea was to spend the night in that camping space, so after going for a walk in the surrounding area, night was slowly falling. What gave no respite that day was the cold, and during the night the weather worsened with gusts of freezing wind. I wanted to be outside to look at the night scenery, but after a few minutes the cold was unbearable. We all took turns to stay inside the motorhome for a while and outside, while accompanying the bus driver as he prepared dinner on a fire. We couldn't even stand that close to the fire because sparks flew everywhere, so we had to be very careful. But at the end of the day, the roast beef for ‘tacos’ was delicious ❤️.

That night the starry sky looked beautiful: being 50 km away from the nearest cities, the darkness was very intense and the night sky could be appreciated. I wanted to take the opportunity to test the camera of my humble mobile phone and by playing with some settings of the pro function, I managed to get this relatively decent photo. I made many attempts, but between the wind, the cold and the fact that I don't have a tripod yet, my goal was not so easy. Every time I took off my gloves to manipulate the mobile phone I could feel my hand getting cold, so once I got a decent shot I gave up and went inside the motorhome 😂.

Spending the night on the shores of Lake Villarino was one of my favourite nights of this trip. Having those beautiful landscapes so close and that starry sky all for us was a real privilege. The dinner was also very good, and afterwards we stayed late into the night, having some spirits to warm up our bodies, after we had burnt all the available firewood. This was the nicest walk I have done in recent times, and even the extreme cold could not dampen our good mood 😅.
