Argentina - Taking advantage of the free activities in the province of Catamarca: a walk in the Quebrada's Lost Village. 😃❤️

Almost immediately after my arrival in the province of Catamarca, I started planning my itinerary as to what things I could do there during my stay. The great thing about being in a totally new province is that there are so many things to discover, and I was looking forward to it. Before my visit, I knew almost nothing about the city of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca where I was staying, but it didn't take me long to find out what there was to do in the surrounding area. This city has a lot of museums to visit, and one of them and the most beautiful one I visited was the Quebrada's Lost Village 😃.

Although I had read comments that tourism in this province is not so well exploited, when I arrived in the capital I found a much better picture than I expected. Being right in the centre, there were several bus lines that took you to different parts of the city, each with something interesting to see. This was very useful for me, as I don't have my own transport but I really wanted to be everywhere. To visit the museum I wanted to visit, I had to take a bus that dropped me right at the door, but I arrived an hour before the guided tour, which forced me to have an impromptu lunch by the river 😃.

By the time it was time, I was finally able to enter the museum and walk around a bit before the guide gave the tour. This activity was free and included a tour inside the museum and then a short trek to the interesting part of this place. It was an ancient settlement of the original peoples, and before starting the walk there was an interpretative display of what these ancient civilisations were like. I love these recreations about life in those days, it is very interesting to know how they managed back then 😃.

Once outside, there was a path with a drop of about 50 metres on a mountain road. It wasn't that steep, but it was still a bit tiring because of the dryness of this province. At the end of this road, you could find a plain with a lot of archaeological remains. This place used to be a settlement and the guide explained to us the hierarchical organisation of these villages and how they organised the houses as the population increased 😃.

The guide told us that ancient civilisations looked for places like this, high and with a good view of the whole valley in order to be on the alert for possible invasions. It was incredible to think how they managed to build all that up there, because those stones were the same ones that were on the banks of the river. It probably took many years to build all that, and it was good that they have preserved it now 😃.

The guide also told us that this place became a museum only a year ago, because it used to be a free access area. In order to preserve it, they decided to close the place and regulate its entrance. This seems to me to be a good reason to preserve the good condition of these ruins so that many more people can enjoy them over time 😃.

I really enjoyed this first visit to get to know the surroundings of the province. This place was a good plan for a half-day excursion, to get to know a bit of history and to see a bit of the mountains up close. I was surprised that for this activity you don't have to pay any ticket, which in my opinion, means that the province of Catamarca is investing in developing its tourism. There is still a lot of work to be done on spreading the word about the interesting things to do in these places, but at least they are starting to spread the word at least a little bit more 😃.

Very beautiful, hopefully it will be a pleasant trip, with the plan ❤️

Yes, it was a nice walk!

Saludos, @lauramica.

Are those plants called cactus? They look like one though just the bigger version

Yessss, all of they are cactus !

It's great when you're in a place and you can access tourist sites just by taking buses, which is much less expensive.

I'm glad you arrived before the museum opened and were able to see this natural river and take advantage of the time to eat something

It's wonderful that you went up to the colony where the native peoples made their settlements; I love that the guides included indigenous topics in their itinerary and showed them their settlements

It's incredible that the museum is only one year old, and it's great that they did it to preserve the history of the place

Beautiful photographs, dear friend @lauramica, another province that I would love to visit

Yes, I think that as I still don't have my own car it is best to be in a central place like this where you can go for a walk to several places from there :) Everything was very beautiful 😃.

Jajajaja siiii, eran enormes 😅

🌵🏜️😁
