When I decided that I wanted to travel to Bolivia because all the roads had lined up for me to do so, I knew I was going to see a lot of new things. However, a zebra directing traffic was something I didn't expect but it was interesting nonetheless. Even though this country shares a border with Argentina, everything on the other side looked very different to me. Every kilometer we advanced on our trip had a new anecdote, and that was no different when we finally arrived in the city of Potosí 😃.
Cuando decidí que quería viajar a Bolivia porque todos los caminos se habían alineado para que así sea, sabía que iba a ver muchas cosas nuevas. Sin embargo, una cebra dirigiendo el tránsito era algo que no esperaba pero igualmente fue interesante. A pesar de que este país comparte la frontera con Argentina, todo del otro lado se veía muy diferente para mí. Cada kilometro que avanzabamos en nuestro viaje tenía una anécdota nueva, y eso no fue diferente cuando al fin llegamos a la ciudad de Potosí 😃.
After passing through Uyuni, our trip for two became a trip for three, as we joined the road trip with Englishwoman L, a solo traveler with a similar route to ours. This new addition to the team helped me a lot to practice my English conversation and also made the trip have many more stops than we had been making the previous days. She frequently needed to find a bathroom in nature to pee, and that forced us to get out of the car to stretch our legs a bit 😃.
Después de pasar por Uyuni, nuestro viaje de dos se transformó en un viaje de tres, ya que unimos al roadtrip a la inglesa L, una viajera solitaria con una ruta similar a la nuestra. Esta nueva incorporación al equipo me sirvió mucho para practicar mi conversación de inglés y también hizo que el paseo tuviera muchas más paradas que las que veníamos haciendo los días anteriores. Ella frecuentemente necesitaba encontrar un baño en la naturaleza para hacer pipi, y eso a nosotros nos obligaba a bajarnos del auto a estirar un poco las piernas 😃.
As we continued on our journey, the joke was that thanks to incontinence, we were getting to know Bolivia in more detail. Otherwise, these beautiful places along the way would only have been appreciated in seconds as we passed by. In particular, one of our stops was at this lagoon, which reminded me a lot of the one I saw in Catamarca during the route of the six thousanders. Well, I was very intense comparing all the landscapes with those of Argentina, and they had to understand me because Bolivia was only my second real international trip 🙃.
Avanzando en el viaje, luego el chiste era que gracias a la incontinencia, estabamos conociendo a Bolivia más detalladamente. De lo contrario, estos hermosos lugares en la mitad del camino solo hubiesen sido apreciados en segundos al pasar. En particular, una de nuestras paradas fue en esta laguna, que me recordó mucho a la que ví en Catamarca durante la ruta de los seismiles. Bueno, yo estaba muy intensa comparando todos los paisajes con los de Argentina, y ellos debían entenderme porque Bolivia era apenas mi segundo viaje internacional verdadero 🙃.
Of course, not all of our stops were for the sake of peeing, some of them were also because we specifically wanted to see a striking place. Our road trip didn't have a very strict plan, so we were open to any stops. Also, the car couldn't go that fast and since we were quite high up, it was better if we let it rest every now and then. That was the reason why it took us about 5 hours to cover only 180 kilometers, but since we still had plenty of light, we were fine 😃.
Por supuesto que no todas nuestras paradas fueron por pipí, algunas también fueron porque queríamos ver específicamente un lugar llamativo. Nuestro roadtrip no tenía un plan muy estricto, así que estábamos abiertos a cualquier parada. Además el autito no podía ir tan rápido y como estabamos bastante alto, era mejor si lo dejabamos descansar cada tanto. Esa fue la razón por la que tardamos como 5 horas para hacer solo 180 kilómetros, pero como todavía teníamos mucha luz íbamos tranquilos 😃.
During those 180 kilometers we didn't see many people, except for a few in a small settlement in Pulacayo (where we actually stopped for a while). Our next stop with other humans was until we got to Potosí, where we could already see the city from the road. What fascinated me about Bolivia was the remote places where they established their cities, in high mountains, obviously guided by the exploitation of mineral wealth 🙂.
Durante esos 180 kilómetros no vimos mucha gente, más que a algunos en un pequeño asentamiento en Pulacayo (donde efectivamente frenamos por pi-pí). Nuestra siguiente parada con otros humanos fue hasta que llegamos a Potosí, en donde ya pudimos ver la ciudad desde la ruta. Lo que me fascinó de Bolivia era en los lugares remotos en donde ellos establecieron sus ciudades, en altas montañas guiados obviamente por la explotación de riqueza minera 🙂.
But in Potosí it is not only people who have conquered these lands: domesticated animals seem to have done so as well. In these times, everyone must make an effort to sustain the local economy, even those animals that under normal conditions should not even work. That does not seem to matter in Potosí, and in order to promote employment, even zebras work. What do you think about this, equality with man or animal exploitation?
Pero en Potosí no solo la gente ha conquistado estas tierras: además, parecen haberlo hecho los animales domésticados. En los tiempos que corren, todos deben hacer un esfuerzo por sostener la economía local, incluso aquellos animales que en condiciones normales ni siquiera deberían trabajar. Eso no parece importar en Potosí, y con tal de fomentar el empleo, hasta las cebras trabajan. ¿Qué opinan de esto, igualdad con el hombre o explotación animal?
Jokes aside, to this day I don't understand why there were zebras dressed up to guide traffic, but it was actually very useful. Although there were traffic lights, Potosí seemed to me to be a very busy city, with lots of cars and pedestrians, and a little more order was needed. I can't find any justification for such uniformity, and that's without even mentioning the almost 30 degrees it was that day, but at least it's one of the things that reminds me of this city 😅.
Dejando de lado el chiste, hasta el día de hoy no entiendo por qué había cebras disfrazadas para guiar el transito, pero esto era muy útil en verdad. Si bien habían semáforos, Potosí me pareció una ciudad muy concurrida, con gran cantidad de autos y peatones y era necesario un poco de orden adicional. No encuentro justificación para tal uniforme, y eso sin todavía mencionar los casi 30 grados que hacían ese día, pero al menos es una de las cosas que me hace recordar esta ciudad 😅.
After spending quite a while in the car and not eating anything for most of the day, we arrived in Potosí with the last hours of sunlight but very hungry. To our good fortune and surprise, the food was also very plentiful and cheap here. For this plate with meat, rice, salad, egg, potatoes and banana I paid no more than $2.5 (18 bolivian pesos), a price that in Argentina would not even buy you a few fries. This was more than enough for my improvised travel budget, and for my empty stomach at 7 PM 😃.
Después de haber estado bastante tiempo en el auto y sin comer nada en casi todo el día, llegamos a Potosí con las últimas horas del sol pero con muchísima hambre. Para nuestra surte y sorpresa, la comida también era muy abundante y económica aquí. Por este plato con carne, arroz, ensalada, huevo, papas y banana no pagué más de $2.5 (18 pesos bolivianos), un precio con el que en Argentina ni siquiera lograrias comprarte un poco de papas fritas. Esto estuvo más que bien para mi presupuesto improvisado de viaje, y para mi estómago vacío a las 7 PM 😃.
Where we weren't so lucky was finding decent accommodation at a reasonable price. All the places had bad reviews, and the ones that had good reviews were very expensive. We must have toured at least five accommodations until we found a decent one at 70 bolivianos per person ($10 approx.). This was just what we wanted to pay and for the end of a long, long day, it felt like a five-star hotel 😃.
En lo que no tuvimos tanta suerte fue en el hecho de encontrar un alojamiento decente con un precio acorde. Todos los lugares tenían malas reseñas, y los que tenían buenas, eran muy costosos. Habremos hecho un tour por al menos cinco alojamientos hasta que encontramos uno decente a 70 pesos bolivianos por persona ($10 aprox). Esto era justo lo que queríamos pagar y para ser el final de un largo, largo día, se sintió como un hotel cinco estrellas 😃.

180 km is a long journey but when we know that after such a long journey we will find a beautiful place where we will see a lot of scenery and have a good experience, it is much more fun to go here.
