The Salar de Uyuni was the coolest place we visited during our trip to Bolivia and my favorite because of how unique this landscape is. There is a reason it is the most touristy in this area, so we couldn't miss it. Luckily, our visit to it included, in addition to an afternoon walking around the area, a night camping there. We had seen on the internet that many people stay overnight there and we wanted to try it too. I wouldn't say it was the most comfortable night of all, but living the full experience of the end and the beginning of a new day made it memorable ❤️.
El Salar de Uyuni fue el lugar más genial que visitamos durante nuestro paseo a Bolivia y mi preferido por lo único que es este paisaje. Por algo es el más turístico dentro de esta zona, así que no podíamos perdernoslo. Por suerte, nuestra visita a él incluyó, además de una tarde paseando por los alrededores, una noche acampando ahí mismo. Habíamos visto en internet que mucha gente se queda a dormir ahí y queríamos intentarlo también. No diría que fue la noche más cómoda de todas, pero vivir la experiencia completa del fin y el inicio de un nuevo día la hizo memorable ❤️.
We started our visit to the Salar de Uyuni after noon, when Guest M and I stopped by a local mechanic to take a look at the little car. While it was running fine, not everything was perfect, and we didn't want it to break down while we were in such a remote location. Luckily, everything was in order enough to continue. This pre-stop was productive, as the mechanic also gave us recommendations on where to camp for free inside the salar 😃.
Empezamos nuestra visita al Salar de Uyuni después del mediodía, cuando Huésped M y yo pasamos por un mecánico local para que echara un vistazo al pequeño autito. Si bien funcionaba bien, no todo estaba perfecto y no queríamos que falle mientras estuviéramos en ese lugar tan remoto. Por suerte, todo estaba lo suficientemente en orden como para continuar. Esta parada previa fue productiva, ya que el mecánico también nos dió recomendaciones sobre donde acampar gratis dentro del salar 😃.
Within this great white desert there are stone "islands" that one can approach. I am very impressed to think that this whole place used to be a giant lake millions of years ago and that is why these islands exist. The most famous and exploited for tourism is the so-called "Incahuasi", where camping was allowed for a cost of 30 bolivianos per person ($4.5). It was not really much, but since we knew that 25 km further from there there was another free island, we headed to it 😅.
Dentro de este gran desierto blanco existen "islas" de piedra a las que uno puede acercarse. Me impresiona mucho pensar que todo este lugar solía ser un lago gigante hace millones de años y por eso existen estas islas. La más famosa y explotada para el turismo en la llamada "Incahuasi", en donde estaba permitido acampar por un costo de 30 pesos bolivianos por persona ($4,5). No era mucho realmente, pero ya que supimos que 25 km más lejos de ahí había otra isla gratis nos dirigimos a ella 😅.
The issue of perspectives within the Salar de Uyuni is something to keep in mind when you go on a trip, since things that seem close can be tens of kilometers away. It was also very useful to have offline maps to be able to have an idea of these distances. After driving a few minutes through all that desert, we arrived at the island that the mechanic told us about. This island even had a shelter made of stones to put up the tent and traces of old campfires, so we were not the first to go there but luckily we were the only ones at that time 😃.
El tema de las perspectivas dentro del Salar de Uyuni es algo que hay que tener muy en cuenta a la hora de tu paseo, ya que las cosas que parecen cercanas pueden estar a decenas de kilómetros. También nos resultó muy útil contar con mapas sin conexión para poder tener idea de estas distancias. Después de manejar unos minutos entre todo ese desierto, llegamos a la isla que nos indicó el mecánico. Esta isla incluso contaba con un refugio armado de piedras para poner la carpa y rastros de antiguas fogatas, por lo que no fuimos los primeros en ir pero por suerte si éramos los únicos en ese momento 😃.
By the time we reached our own private island, the sun was almost completely setting. We preferred to use the last minutes of daylight to climb up to the top of the island and watch the sunset from there. Seeing that clear landscape with those sunset colors was something surreal, I can't explain it well but it was like being in a dream. Hypnotic and incredible ❤️.
Para cuando llegamos a nuestra propia isla privada, el sol ya estaba bajando casi por completo. Preferimos usar los últimos minutos de luz para subir hasta la cima de la isla y observar el atardecer desde ahí. Ver ese paisaje tan claro y con esos colores del atardecer era algo surreal, no puedo explicarlo bien pero era como estar en un sueño. Hipnótico e increíble ❤️.
Walking on the salt was also very strange, as with every step we took, we felt a crunching sound, as if the ground was going to break. The mechanic also warned us not to get too close to the coast of the island with the car, as in that part the salt fragmented more and we ran the risk of getting stuck. That made me a little scared even when walking, so we were very careful when crossing to dry land 😂.
Caminar sobre la sal también era muy curioso, ya que con cada paso que dábamos, sentíamos como un crujido, como si el suelo fuera a romperse. El mecánico también nos advirtió de no acercarnos mucho con el auto a la costa de la isla, ya que en esa parte la sal se fragmentaba peor y corríamos riesgo de quedarnos atascados. Eso me hizo dar un poco de miedo hasta caminando, así que teníamos mucho cuidado cuando cruzábamos a tierra firme 😂.
Just before we lost all the light, we went to set up the tent and arrange our sleeping gear. By 8 PM it was completely dark and we had everything ready for dinner and then sleep. I was glad to have gone on the trip with Guest M, because since he had been traveling for quite some time, he had all the necessary things to make a complete camp. I remember that apparently the place where we put our tent was the home of some small rodents that harassed us all night, so I was a little scared that they would come to sleep with us. Luckily they didn't happen, but we still heard them trying to do it by tearing the tent fabric with their paws 😂.
Justo antes de quedarnos completamente sin luz, fuimos a armar la carpa y acomodar nuestras cosas para dormir. Para las 8 PM ya era completamente de noche y nosotros teníamos todo listo para cenar y dormir luego. Me gustó haber ido de viaje con Huésped M, porque como él venía viajando hace bastante tiempo, tenía todas las cosas necesarias para hacer un campamento completo. Me acuerdo que aparentemente el lugar en donde pusimos nuestra carpa era la casa de algunos pequeños roedores que nos acosaron toda la noche, así que yo estaba un poco asustada de que se metan a dormir con nosotros. Por suerte no sucedió, pero igual los escuchamos intentándolo rasgando con sus patas la tela de la carpa 😂.
The most beautiful thing about that night was the starry it was: in a place so far from light pollution and with a completely clear sky, the stars and the Milky Way looked incredible. The worst thing was the cold we suffered: although there was no wind, I could hardly sleep because I was so frozen. Since I had gone to Bariloche in winter before this trip, I had all my snowy and warm clothes and I slept in those, but it still wasn't enough to keep me comfortable at night. That's why when the alarm went off at 5 AM to get up to see the sunrise, I was grateful because that meant the sun was already rising 😂.
Lo más hermoso de esa noche fue lo estrellado que estaba: en un lugar tan alejado de la contaminación lumínica y con un cielo totalmente despejado, las estrellas y la vía láctea se veían increíbles. Lo peor fue el frío que pasamos: si bien no había viento, yo casi que no pude dormir de lo congelada que estaba. Como antes de este viaje yo había ido a Bariloche en invierno, tenía toda mi ropa más de nieve y abrigada y con eso dormi, pero igual no fue suficiente para mantenerme cómoda en la noche. Por eso cuando sonó el despertador a las 5 AM para levantarnos a ver el amanecer, lo agradecí porque eso significaba que el sol ya estaba saliendo 😂.
Watching the sunrise at the Salar de Uyuni was also a beautiful (and blinding) experience. Once again, the day was beautiful and, most importantly, there was no wind. Before going, we had read that the wind in this great desert was terrible, but we had ideal weather. Watching a sunrise is always special, but in this place it was even more so. At that moment we also saw another car leaving one of the islands in front, so that day we were not the only ones who did not want to pay to camp on Incahuasi Island 😂.
Ver el amanecer en el Salar de Uyuni también fue una experiencia hermosa (y enceguecedora). Otra vez el día estaba hermoso y lo más importante de todo, sin viento. Antes de ir habíamos leído que el viento en este gran desierto era terrible, pero a nosotros nos tocó un clima ideal. Ver un amanecer siempre es especial, pero en este lugar lo fue aún más. En ese momento también vimos a otro auto salir de una de las islas de enfrente, así que ese día no fuimos los únicos que no quisimos pagar para acampar en la Isla Incahuasi 😂.
Once the sun was fully out, we soon had to put on sunscreen again because the reflection on your face was worse than the reflection produced by the snow. I also had to wear sunglasses, which I hate, but if I wanted to protect my eyes I had to. At times I just stared into space, thinking about everything, because I couldn't believe I was in such a beautiful place. In another timeline I would have been working in a hostel, but luckily in the real one I was walking around and taking photos in this incredible salt flat 😂.
Una vez que el sol salió completamente, no tardamos en tener que ponernos protector solar de nuevo porque el reflejo que te daba en la cara era peor que el producido por la nieve. También tenía que usar los lentes de sol que los odio, pero si quería proteger mis ojos tenía que hacerlo. Por momentos me queda mirando a la nada, pensando en todo, porque no podia creer estar en ese lugar tan lindo. En otra línea de tiempo yo tendría que haber estado trabajando en un hostel, pero por suerte en la real estaba paseando y sacándome fotos en este salar increíble 😂.

Before we started our second day on the salt flat, we had our breakfast of tea, bread and dulce de leche. I think we had enough food to camp for three days, but it's better to have too much than not enough. I was happy to have the sun shining on my face, after having almost frozen the night before. When I had camped in the mountains in the summer and had been so cold, I said I would never do it again, but never say never, and that was another night like that. The important thing is that I survived and I was ready for a new walk 😂.
Antes de empezar nuestro segundo día en el salar, tomamos nuestro desayuno con té, pan y dulce de leche. Creo que llevamos mucha comida como para acampar tres días, pero mejor que sobre y no que falte. Yo estaba feliz de que el sol me diera en la cara, después de haberme casi congelado la noche anterior. Cuando había acampado en el verano en la montaña y pasé tanto frío dije que nunca más lo iba a hacer, pero nunca digas nunca, y esa fue otra noche parecida a esa. Lo importante es que sobreviví y ya estaba lista para un nuevo paseo 😂.
Choosing to camp at the Salar de Uyuni was good for our travel diary and for our budget, because we saved a day of accommodation. Spending the night there made everything very special, since making the effort to freeze in a tent to see those landscapes was invaluable. These adventurous plans are what I like and why I enjoy traveling so much, in addition to having coincided at that moment with someone who liked the same things. Everything was incredible that night, and luckily the cold I suffered is now only an insignificant memory 😂.
Haber elegido acampar en el Salar de Uyuni fue bueno para nuestro diario de viaje y para nuestro presupuesto, porque ahorramos un día de alojamiento. Pasar la noche ahi mismo volvió todo muy especial, ya que hacer el esfuerzo de congelarse en una carpa para ver esos paisajes fue invaluable. Estos planes aventureros son los que me gustan y por los que disfruto mucho viajar, además de haber coincidido en ese momento con alguien que le gustaban las mismas cosas. Todo fue increíble esa noche, y por suerte el frío que pasé ahora solo es un recuerdo insignificante 😂.

Laura 😱 I always admire everything you share from your travels, but this place in Bolivia has stolen my heart. The picture of the sun on the horizon made a big impact on me, and I will indeed save it on my pc, either for wallpaper or to eventually see it in the screensaver. What a beauty this great salt flat, its magnitude is impressive. I hope I can visit a place like this someday and in fact the other thing I loved is the view of the night sky, I love to lie down to see the stars, but in the city it's not the same. Wow!! Que maravilla, es impresionante ese lugar, la verdad que las maravillas de la naturaleza nunca dejan de sorprendernos. He acampado en bosques en condiciones de lluvia y frío, y algunas veces no con las mejores condiciones, la verdad es que se me hacia muy difícil dormir, mencionaste que el frío que no te dejó dormir y me llegaron esos recuerdos a la mente jjj. Son momentos en los que se pasa un poco de trabajo pero al final se disfruta 😃. Espero que el viaje siga marchando bien y que lo disfrutes al maximo. Saludos
