The good thing about having a barely organised plan was that we could add things to do as they occurred to us. We had a route to follow and a set time, but what happened in between was quite flexible. Thanks to that, during our trip in Bolivia we added several stops that were not planned but that added a lot of fun anecdotes to our trip. One of them was when we improvisedly decided to climb a mountain at 5000 masl just because we saw it in passing on the road. At first I thought it was crazy, but then I got excited about the idea 😃.
Lo bueno de tener un plan apenas organizado era que podíamos ir agregando cosas para hacer a medida que se nos ocurrieran. Teníamos una ruta que seguir y un tiempo determinado, pero lo que pasara en medio era bastante flexible. Gracias a eso, durante nuestro viaje en Bolivia agregamos varias paradas que no estaban planificadas pero que agregaron muchas anécdotas divertidas a nuestro paseo. Una de ellas fue cuando improvisadamente decidimos subir una montaña a 5000 msnm solo porque la vimos de pasada en la ruta. Al principio me pareció una locura, pero después también me emocioné por la idea 😃.
As our journey progressed, we also climbed higher and higher. While we were in Tupiza, we reached an altitude of over 2850 masl, which was still no higher than the highest we had ever been at El Hornocal in Jujuy, Argentina, at 3450 metres. As we had been at these altitudes for several days, our ears were almost no longer blocked, but we were still careful about it 😃.
A medida que nuestro viaje iba avanzando, a la par también íbamos subiendo. Mientras estuvimos en Tupiza, alcanzamos una altura de más de 2850 msnm, que igualmente no superaba a lo más alto que habíamos estado en el Hornocal en Jujuy, Argentina, a 3450 metros de altura. Como hace varios días que veníamos en estos valores, ya casi que no se nos tapaban los oídos pero igual seguíamos teniendo cuidado con eso 😃.
However, on our way to the city of Uyuni, we added a plan thanks to a mountain we saw on the route. It was Cerro Chorolque, which we read could be reached by car and was 5000 masl. Neither I nor Guest M had ever been that high before, and he immediately said we had to do it. We couldn't go right then and there because it was already late, so we stopped in the village of Atocha to sleep and early the next morning we started our adventure. So that the altitude wouldn't affect us, we had a power breakfast which included eating a noodle stew and peanut soup at 7am (surprisingly there were a lot of people eating that at that time in the local market), and we also chewed coca leaves on the way up 😃.
Sin embargo, en nuestro camino hacia la ciudad de Uyuni, agregamos un plan gracias a una montaña que vimos en la ruta. Se trataba del Cerro Chorolque, al que leímos que se podía llegar con vehículo y que su altura era de 5000 msnm. Ni yo ni Huésped M habíamos estado tan alto nunca, y él enseguida dijo que teníamos que hacerlo. No pudimos ir en ese mismo momento porque ya era tarde, por lo que hicimos una parada en el pueblo de Atocha para dormir y al día siguiente temprano empezamos nuestra aventura. Para que la altura no nos afectara, tuvimos un desayuno potente que incluyó comer un guiso de fideos y sopa de maní a las 7 AM (sorprendentemente había mucha gente que comía eso a esa hora en el mercado local), y también masticamos hojas de coca en el camino 😃.
We had read that at the foot of Cerro Chorolque was the mining town of Santa Barbara. This hill is actually an extinct volcano and a mine of silver, gold, copper, bismuth and tin. After driving the 25 km from Atocha to this place, most of the way on a gravel road, we arrived at the entrance of the village and did not know that there would be a police checkpoint. There they stopped us and asked us a lot of questions about what we were driving for and how long we were going to stay. We said we were just going for a short walk, but that didn't convince the guard, who had to call the mine manager to authorise the visit. After about half an hour, we were allowed to enter, but not before we had our documents and passports retained 🙃.
Habíamos leído que a los pies del Cerro Chorolque se ubicaba el pueblo minero de Santa Bárbara. Este cerro en realidad es un volcán extinto y una mina de plata, oro, cobre, bismuto y estaño. Después de manejar los 25 km que separaban Atocha de este lugar, la mayor parte del tramo en calle de ripio, llegamos a la entrada del pueblo y no sabíamos que iba a haber un puesto de control policial. Ahí nos frenaron y nos hicieron muchas preguntas, sobre para qué íbamos y cuánto tiempo nos íbamos a quedar. Dijimos que solo íbamos a pasear un rato, pero eso no convenció al guardia, quien tuvo que llamar al jefe de la mina para que autorizara la visita. Después de una media hora, nos dejaron ingresar, no sin antes retenernos nuestros documentos y pasaportes 🙃.
Anyway, we managed to enter the village and we were already at an altitude of more than 4000 metres. We were checking the altitude on an app on our mobile phone and every kilometre we went higher and higher. A few minutes later, we over the maximum altitude at which I had been: 4170 masl at the Cuesta de Lipán in Jujuy, Argentina, in the year 2021, and there was still more to go to the town at 4800 meters above sea level. When we finally reached there, the view from there was incredible. It was very cold, so we had to put on all our coats 😃.
Como sea, logramos ingresar al pueblo y ya estabamos a más de 4000 metros de altura. Íbamos chequeando la altura en una aplicación en el celular y cada kilómetro que avanzabamos subiamos más y más. Unos minutos después, superamos la altura máxima a la que yo estuve: 4170 msnm en la Cuesta de Lipán en Jujuy, Argentina, en el año 2021, y aún faltaba más hasta el pueblo a 4800 msnm. Cuando finalmente llegamos, era increíble la vista que se veía desde ahí. Hacía mucho frío, por lo que tuvimos que ponernos todo nuestro abrigo 😃.
From the police entrance to the village, we had been ordered to go to the mine manager's office to talk to him and tell him our plan. When we entered, the man looked very serious and questioned us. If it were up to me, he would not have given many details, but Guest M is correct like all Europeans and told him exactly what we wanted to do: drive up Cerro Chorolque to reach an altitude of 5000 masl, the highest we would both be in our lives 🙃.
Desde la entrada policial del pueblo, nos habían dado la orden de dirigirnos hasta la oficina del jefe de la mina para hablar con él y contarle nuestro plan. Cuando entramos, el hombre se veía muy serio y nos interrogó. Si fuera por mí no hubiese dado muchos detalles, pero Huésped M es correcto como todo europeo y le contó exactamente lo que queríamos hacer: subir al Cerro Chorolque con el auto para alcanzar una altura de 5000 msnm, lo más alto que estaríamos los dos en nuestra vida 🙃.
The village was at an altitude of 4800 metres, in fact, if we climbed a little higher up the hill we would reach our objective, but the mine boss did not like the plan and forbade us to go any further up the mountain. He told us that at that moment there were workers extracting minerals and that because of the explosions it was dangerous for us to be walking around while the people were working. However, he did allow us to walk around the village, but about three times he told us NOT to go up to the mine 🙃.
El pueblo se encontraba a 4800 metros de altura, en realidad con subir un poco más sobre el cerro alcanzaríamos nuestro objetivo, pero al jefe de la mina no le gustó el plan y nos prohibió seguir avanzando montaña arriba. Nos dijo que en ese momento habían trabajadores extrayendo minerales y que por las explosiones era peligroso que nosotros estuviéramos paseando mientras la gente trabajaba. De todos modos, si nos permitió recorrer los alrededores del pueblo, pero como tres veces nos dijo que NO subiéramos a la mina 🙃.
This rather discouraged Guest M, who was very much looking forward to reaching 5000 masl that day. We checked to see if there were any small peaks to walk up but there were none. Instead, there was a road that continued, not uphill, to a neighbouring village called San Antonio. As a consolation prize we decided to go there, but guess what, on the way we saw another road going up towards the mine but already on the outskirts of Santa Barbara. I didn't agree to go up there, but I wasn't the one driving either 😅.
Esto desalentó bastante a Huésped M, quien estaba muy ilusionado con alcanzar los 5000 msnm ese día. Nos fijamos si había algún pequeño pico para subir caminando pero no lo había. En su lugar, existía un camino que continuaba, no montaña arriba, hacia un pueblo vecino llamado San Antonio. Como premio consuelo decidimos ir ahí, ¿pero adivinen qué?, en el camino vimos otro camino que subía hacia la mina pero ya en las afueras de Santa Bárbara. Yo no estuve de acuerdo con subir, pero yo tampoco era la que manejaba 😅.
It was one of the entrances to the mine and there were workers at the time. I didn't even want to get out of the car, I was terrified that we would get a fine, but Guest M got out and the workers treated him very well (he looks like a typical European so he was received kindly) and it was they who encouraged him to continue up that road, even to the top of the mine. They told him that there was no one else up there because the work shifts were over, so we could go up safely 😃.
Se trataba de una de las entradas a la mina y en ese momento habían trabajadores. Yo no quería ni bajar del auto, estaba aterrada por el hecho de que nos pusieran una multa, pero Huésped M bajó y los trabajadores lo trataron muy bien (su apariencia es de un típico europeo así que lo recibieron con amabilidad) y fueron ellos quienes lo alentaron a seguir subiendo por ese camino, incluso hasta la cima de la mina. Le dijeron que no ya no había nadie más arriba porque los turnos de trabajo habían terminado, así que podíamos subir sin riesgos 😃.
The road was super narrow and steep, but nothing the little Suzuki 4x4 couldn't climb. At one point, we were climbing so steep that we could no longer see the road, but we had so much adrenaline that we wanted to keep going anyway. We counted down by looking at the altitude meter on the mobile phone and when we finally reached 5000 metres we parked in a place to get off and see all that we had climbed 😃.
El camino era super estrecho e inclinado, pero nada que el pequeño Suzuki 4x4 no pudiera subir. En un momento, estábamos subiendo tan inclinados que ya no veíamos la calle, pero teníamos tanta adrenalina que queríamos seguir igual. Hicimos una cuenta regresiva mirando el medidor de altura en el celular y cuando finalmente llegamos a los 5000 metros nos estacionamos en un lugar para bajar y ver todo lo que habíamos subido 😃.
Being at over 5000 meters above sea level was an incredible feeling for me, something I had never experienced before. Luckily, I didn't have any pain or dizziness, so I can say that the stew and the coca leaves did the trick. Everything looked amazing from up there: the mountains looked drawn and the wind was so strong that you had to be careful not to fall. We could have continued climbing a little higher, but Guest M was humble in his goal of 5000 meters above sea level and we turned back, plus we were still scared that the mine boss would arrive at any moment and see that we disobeyed him 😂.
Estar a más de 5000 metros de altura fue una sensación increíble para mí, algo que nuca había experimentado. Por suerte, no me dolía nada ni me sentía mareada, por lo que puedo decir que ese guiso y las hojas de coca funcionaron. Todo se veía increíble desde ahí arriba: las montañas parecían dibujadas y el viento era tanto que había que tener cuidado de no caerse. Podríamos haber seguido subiendo un poco más, pero Huésped M fue humilde en su objetivo de 5000 msnm y volvimos, además de que aún estábamos asustados de que el jefe de la mina llegara en cualquier momento y viera que lo desobedecimos 😂.
Once we had completed our objective, we started the descent of the mountain. Of course we didn't go to San Antonio, as it was just an excuse to see if we could climb a little higher on another side. Anyway, we passed through the town quickly and until we left and our identification documents were returned to us we were not calm. I enjoyed this day a lot and this storytime was very long, so if you got this far and read everything, I want you to tell me in a comment the exact number that the altitude counter on our cell phone marked when we exceeded 5000 meters above sea level and I will give you 3 hives. Una vez completado nuestro objetivo, empezamos la bajada de la montaña. Por supuesto que no fuimos a San Antonio, ya que solo era una excusa para ver si podíamos subir un poco más por otro lado. De todos modos, pasamos rápido por el pueblo y hasta que no salimos y no nos devolvieron nuestros documentos de identificación no estuvimos tranquilos. This trip to Bolivia was completely memorable from start to finish and I'm glad it ended so well. I think this was the riskiest thing we did, disobeying the authorities in another country but luckily none of us were fined. Being at 5000 meters above sea level is my altitude record for the moment and I think it will remain that way for a long time. Visiting the town of Santa Barbara and the extinct volcano Cerro Chorolque was very curious and the fact that it appeared unexpectedly in our plans was good: sometimes the unplanned can also turn out great ❤️.
Este viaje a Bolivia fue completamente memorable de principio a fin y me alegra que haya concluido de manera satisfactoria. Creo que esto fue lo más arriesgado que hicimos, desobedeciendo las autoridades en otro país pero por suerte ninguno de nosotros fue multado. Estar a 5000 msnm es mi record de altura por el momento y creo que se mantendrá así por mucho tiempo. Visitar el pueblo de Santa Bárbara y el vocán extinto Cerro Chorolque fue muy curioso y que se haya aparecido improvistamente en nuestros planes estuvo bueno: a veces lo no planeado también puede salir excelente ❤️.

I think it's good not to have the trip 100% organized, that allows you to enjoy the spontaneous adventure more.
It's great that you were able to access the hill by vehicle, I don't know that chewing coca was good to avoid getting sick at heights
It's incredible that they had to leave their documents to enter the town, although I think it was worth it, since they were able to indulge themselves by reaching 5000 meters.
