Bolivia - Visit to the Train Cemetery in Uyuni: walking among dozens of still interesting scrap metal. 😃❤️

We had already traveled more than 300 km inside Bolivia and we continued to see a lot of interesting things. Without a doubt, when we arrived at Uyuni, the salt flat took all our amazement, but there were still some things to do in the surroundings of this city. Our trip was being a bit relaxed, so we took advantage of our stay there to get the car in order, fill up with gas, buy some provisions for the following days, and before continuing on the road, we made a stop at the famous local train cemetery 😃.

After spending two days in the salt flats, exploring as much of it as we could, Guest M's car was completely covered in salt. According to the recommendations we had read, this is very bad for the car since this material can be very corrosive. That is why when we returned from there we had to spend the remaining half of the afternoon at a car wash, waiting for the car to be washed. The next morning, when everything was shiny, the trip continued 😃.

At the hostel we were staying at, we met a girl, another solo traveller from Paris, who asked us if she could join us for a few days and of course we said yes. We were now a small group of three, which made the trip more fun. Before leaving Uyuni for good, we stopped by to visit the train cemetery, which was just 3 kilometres from the city centre. This place was already on the outskirts, in a rather deserted place but where this scrap yard was set up 😃.

According to history, these were the first trains to arrive in Uyuni from Antofagasta in Chile, with the idea of serving as a transport of minerals in 1889. However, some forty years later these trains began to operate as passenger transport for the war, which contributed to their progressive deterioration. Some of the broken trains were brought to this place to await repairs that never came and finally they were abandoned in this place, until the passage of time left them as they are now 🙃.

There are a lot of abandoned trains here, still in their original form but many of them are very broken. The fun part is that, at your own risk, you can climb on them and explore them more closely. Climbing on these rusty pieces was interesting, but you had to be careful not to fall or hurt yourself. I had insurance to be in the neighboring country, but I didn't want to have to use it either 😂.

In addition to seeing some pieces of old trains broken on purpose, you can also find many of them with various graffiti. This street art makes the place even more picturesque, generating a mix of feelings of nostalgia but also fascination for being in such a particular place. I even think that the rusty stuff matches the arid landscape of Bolivia, don't you think? 😃

I don't know how many kilometers in total are covered by these scraps, but as you walked you found more and more of them. They also say that this place is a good spot to come and visit at night, because being far from the city center, the stars look amazing. Our itinerary for the day didn't include spending another night in Uyuni so we missed this, but I liked having visited it during the day and with beautiful sunny weather, where we could really appreciate all the details 😃.

In addition to seeing the abandoned trains, near this cemetery you can find an exhibition of sculptures made from scrap metal and other metal elements. These figures are incredibly large and full of details that demonstrate the artist's skill. It is worth going to take a look at these works and since there is no charge to visit the train museum, take the opportunity to leave a small tip for this ingenious sculptor 😃.

Visiting Uyuni, the salt flats and the train cemetery was a good stop on our trip in Bolivia. I was glad to have visited the only tourist spot I had heard about before this trip, and also to have been able to do a little more. It was still early and we had a lot of day ahead of us, but we had already taken advantage of the morning to walk around a bit in this place that we definitely couldn't miss. And I was beginning to get curious about what other new things we would find along the way 😃.

Visiting the salt flat has definitely been a great experience, and it makes sense that they recommended washing the entire car to remove the salt from the components since it is very corrosive. Great that they did it.

What a great story there is in relation to these old dismantled trains that are in the cemetery, wonderful that they have deposited them there for all their history

I loved the different works they have created with the scrap metal, a great way to reuse them

Wow, what an amazing trip, sis. The iron train cars are clearly visible. The beauty of the place is very entertaining, isn't it, sis ❤️

Thank you for sharing them. These images of desolation are shocking, @lauramica
