One of the important stops we made during our road trip in Bolivia was Potosí. Since I didn't have much idea of where we were going exactly, I was surprised by each place we arrived at. Being in the new country was quite an adventure and I liked discovering what the cities there are like. In particular, I liked Potosí quite a bit because of its location at the foot of a large mountain and its aesthetics that matched the landscape. Luckily, we found the perfect spot to admire it from a good place and with a considerable height 😃.
Una de las paradas importantes que hicimos dentro de nuestro roadtrip en Bolivia fue aquella en Potosí. Como yo no tenía mucha idea de hacia donde nos dirigíamos exactamente, me sorprendía con cada lugar al que llegamos. Estar en el nuevo país era toda una aventura y me gustaba descubrir cómo son las ciudades ahí. En particular, Potosí me gustó bastante por su ubicación a los pies de una gran montaña y por su estética que combinaba con el paisaje. Por suerte, encontramos el punto perfecto para admirarla desde un buen lugar y con una altura considerable 😃.
After a long day of travelling over 200 km from Uyuni, we arrived in Potosí in the late afternoon. The first thing that surprised us were the zebras in charge of directing traffic, something very funny that we did not see again in another part of the country, at least as far as I travelled. That day we were so hungry that we dedicated ourselves to looking for a good place to eat and sleep and did not do much else. Travelling is quite exhausting, but it is worth seeing all these places along the way 😃.
Después de un largo día recorriendo un tramo de más de 200 km partiendo desde Uyuni, llegamos a Potosí en las últimas horas de la tarde. Lo primero que nos sorprendió fueron las cebras encargadas de dirigir el tránsito, algo muy divertido que no volvimos a ver en otra parte del país, al menos hasta donde yo lo recorrí. Ese día teníamos tanta hambre que nos dedicamos a buscar un buen lugar para comer y dormir y no hicimos mucho más. Viajar es bastante agotador, pero vale la pena ver todos estos lugares en el camino 😃.
The next day, with a little more time, we spent time exploring the city and its surroundings. Potosí in Bolivia seemed to me to be a very quiet city in parts, but as you approached the center and the main squares, there were people rushing around. That reminded me a lot of Buenos Aires, where people seem to never rest. The day was beautiful and warm enough for a walk, but we didn't know exactly where to go 🙃.
Al día siguiente, con un poco más de tiempo, nos dedicamos a recorrer la ciudad y sus alrededores. Potosí en Bolivia me pareció una ciudad muy tranquila por partes, pero al acercarte al centro y a las plazas principales, había gente muy apurada de acá para allá. Eso me recordó mucho a Buenos Aires, en donde parece que la gente no descansa. El día estaba hermoso y cálido como para dar un paseo, pero no sabíamos muy bien a donde ir exactamente 🙃.
As we walked around one of the main squares, we came across a cathedral that offered a guided tour of its interior and also a climb to one of its towers. This visit cost 30 Bolivian pesos, about $4.5, which at the time I thought was worth it to do something more than wander aimlessly around the city. When we entered the cathedral, we found a beautiful place full of decorations, typical of these religious places 😃.
Mientras caminabamos por los alrededores de una de las plazas principales, nos encontramos con una catedral que ofrecía una visita guiada a su interior y también el ascenso a una de sus torres. Esta visita costaba 30 pesos bolivianos, unos $4.5, que en ese momento pensé que valían la pena como para hacer algo más que dar vueltas sin rumbo en la ciudad. Cuando entramos a la catedral, nos encontramos con un lugar precioso y lleno de decoraciones, típico de estos lugares religiosos 😃.
It was the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, built in 1835 and currently closed to the public, except for these guided tours. According to what the guide told us, this cathedral is built with large amounts of gold and silver, so in order to preserve it, they no longer open its doors as they used to. This also surprised me because it is the first time I have seen a closed church in such a touristy place like this. That made me think that, in addition to taking care of the heritage, they are trying to make a business out of a historic place like this by charging an entrance fee. What do you think 🙃?
Se trataba de la Catedral Metropolitana Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Paz, construida en el año 1835 y actualmente cerrada al público, salvo estas visitas guiadas. Según lo que nos dijo el guía, esta catedral está construida con grandes cantidades de oro y plata, por lo que para preservarla, ya no abren sus puertas como antes. Esto me sorprendió también porque es la primera vez que veo una iglesia cerrada en un lugar tan turístico como este. Eso me hizo pensar en que, además de cuidar el patrimonio, se busca hacer negocio de un lugar histórico como este cobrando una entrada. ¿Qué opinan 🙃?
Anyway, the walk was interesting and we learned a lot about Potosí, and we ended our walk at one of the cathedral towers. There was a viewing point from which you could see the city in all directions. It was almost sunset, so the sun was turning everything into a nice golden light. From the road this city didn't seem that big, but we confirmed this once we were up there 💕.
De cualquier forma, el paseo estuvo interesante y aprendimos varias cosas sobre Potosí, además de concluir nuestro paseo en una de las torres de la catedral. Ahí había un mirador desde el cual se podía ver la ciudad hacia todas direcciones. Ya era casi el atardecer, así que el sol volvía todo con una iluminación dorada agradable. Desde la ruta esta ciudad no parecía tan grande pero confirmamos esto una vez que estuvimos ahí arriba 💕.
During our entire tour of Bolivia, Potosí was the third mining settlement we visited. Behind this city you can see the hill that gave rise to the city, from which a large quantity of silver was extracted in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Spanish. Cerro Potosí, in addition to being a source of this metal, also allowed the extraction of other minerals such as tin, zinc and lead. According to the guide, this mining operation provided work for thousands of people for centuries, although all the wealth was exported to Europe 🙃.
En todo nuestro paseo por Bolivia, Potosí fue el tercer asentamiento minero que visitamos. Por detrás de esta ciudad se puede ver el cerro que le dió origen, de donde se extrajo una gran cantidad de plata en los siglos XVI y XVII, por parte de manos españolas. El Cerro Potosí, además de ser fuente de este metal, también permitió obtener otros minerales como estaño, zinc y plomo. Según el guía, esta explotación minera dio trabajo a miles de personas durante siglos, aunque todas las riquezas fueron exportadas a Europa 🙃.
In the end, having come across the guided tour of the cathedral was very productive and interesting for us. Thanks to that we were able to learn a little more about the history of this place, as well as getting some good panoramic views. When we went up to the cathedral we were also able to ring the bell, which with a small knock made a great sound because it was very solid, just as it had been built more than 200 years ago. I felt very much like a tourist throughout our day getting to know Potosí, and I was delighted with the idea of it being that way: I really wanted to continue seeing what other things there were beyond 😃.
Al final, habernos cruzado con el paseo y visita guiada a la catedral fue algo muy productivo e interesante para nosotros. Gracias a eso pudimos conocer un poco más sobre la historia de este lugar, además de obtener unas buenas vistas panorámicas. Al subir a la catedral también pudimos tocar la campana, la que con un pequeño golpe hacia un gran sonido porque era muy maciza, tal cual la habían construido hace más de 200 años. Me sentí muy turista en todo nuestro día conociendo Potosí, y estaba encantada con la idea de que así fuera: tenía muchas ganas de seguir viendo qué otras cosas habían más allá 😃.

the building is very old but yet it seems new must be very constant in terms or maintenance and keeping it to standard right?
