After Spending two nights in Funchal Madeira we dropped off our small rental car, then hopped on a plane to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal.
My wife was super tired from our hike the previous day and worn out from the early wake up and the heat, so she stayed in the hotel to nap, while I explored the city on my own.
To be honest, I wasn't thrilled with Lisbon for the better part of the day, though it did grow on me a little by the time the evening rolled around.
I found the city to be a bit run down and sketchy in several places, to be somewhat dirty and skizy feeling, and I noticed that there was a lot of trash and litter scattered around the streets and gutters.
These things are somewhat expected in any big city, but in Lisbon I just found them to be more than what I'm used to.
This might have been because I was walking alone without a girl with me, but I was asked at least 4 times in different neighborhoods if I wanted to buy drugs as well.
That was the first time that I had experienced that anywhere in Europe and it put me off a little, especially after one man was particularly insistent about it.
Anytime I found myself alone on a side street I would silently hope to myself that I wouldn't run into anymore people trying to sell me shit. Maybe it's just more comforting when you're traveling with another person in a strange city?
Nothing happened and it wasn't all bad. I did a very extensive and comprehensive walk through a lot of the city, so naturally I would end up in a few slightly more sketchy neighborhoods. It happens.
I did see some cool buildings covered with old Azulejos on my walk though, those are the painted porcelain tiles on the outside of churches or buildings.
I also saw some incredible views of the city from a variety of different platforms,
and while peering between buildings and down many side streets.
I think I saw the entire old town from every possible angle and vantage point.
Rua Nova do Carvalho, or more commonly referred to as "Pink Street," was another interesting spot to stumble upon. Apparently, the street was once the city's red light district, though now it just hosts a variety of trendy looking bars.
According to the source above the street got its color makeover fairly recently, in the year 2011 and it took a full two years to complete! Why it would take so long is completely beyond me though?!? It's not that long so I would think that it could have been painted over the course of a long weekend, or maybe a week or two at most. Maybe a single person was doing the work in the dead of night?
The church of Santa Engrácia, now the Pantheon building of the city, was worth checking out to me as well.
It sort of just came into view from one of the streets I was walking down, so naturally I had to walk up and get a closer look.
It was a beautiful, tall building made of white stone and was quite impressive to see from the outside.
I didn't go in but walked around the exterior to admire its architecture - Boroque style by the looks of it.
Continuing my walk alone, I eventually made my way to the main plaza of the old town, Praça do Comércio, or Commerce Square in English.
My wife and I went back to the location in the evening as well.
It's a massive open space surrounded by restaurants, Cafe's and bars.
Its also a spot where a lot of people gather to admire the monument of Dom José I and the Arch of Rua Augusta.
I have no idea who Dom José I is, but it's an impressive bronze statue in the center of the square.
Actually both of the monuments are pretty cool.
The plaza is located right next to the water of the Tagus River.
I don't know if you can swim in the water (or if you would want to), but it's a nice spot with a view the of the water and a cool suspension bridge in the distance.
All over the city, and other cities in Portugal for that matter, are signs and advertisements for this specialty snack of the country. It's essentially a cod cake filled with melted cheese in the middle that kind of looks like a baked potato to me.
I ordered one for lunch to try it out since I had seen a dozen signs for them, but I really wasn't all that thrilled by the experience. It had an odd dry texture reminiscent of eating crushed baked newspapers. Maybe they are better at some places than others or maybe they are just a gimmick to sell to tourists like me but I personally wouldn't recommend it.
Other interesting things to see are the old trolly cars,
and the ruins of the Carmo Monastery (below).
One of the last things that we did in the evening was head up to a mid size park by the name of Jardim António Nobre.
It's a good spot to view the Sao Jorge castle and to just generally look out over the city.
The park was quite bustling in the evening and had several kiosk like huts that were selling drinks and snack foods like pizza.
A lot of people also go there in the evening to watch the sunset.
We showed up about 10-15 minutes too late so the sun had already dipped below the horizon.
Still, it wasn't a bad way to finish off our night in the big city of Lisbon.

Interesting how your experience was so different when you were alone. It sure is a colorful place and the architecture, especially the churches is great.
Yeah it's probably just the comfort of having someone with you, plus I doubt that I would have been approached to buy drugs if my wife was with me lol.
Hey there!
Did you find the hanging bras more exciting than the hanging shoes that you've featured in your previous post?
I'm only a little bit surprised that you found some areas in Lisbon that rough. Somehow that's the impression I had of it, and then I started to get brainwashed by your recent visits to the coastal cities.
Safety is a HUGE concern for me when I travel, so I would be put off by what you encountered. I think it's fair to say it's not the ideal location for a woman traveling solo?
The overview photos are still attractive though.
I liked the shoes better but the bras were definitely unique and funny.
Yeah any large city is going to have its rough neighborhoods. It was fine in Lisbon but I wouldn't go out alone after dark. A solo female traveller might want to stick to the main touristy areas like the plaza and that area. I think that would be fine. But I wouldn't recommend wandering around alone at night. That probably goes for any major city though.
You know what… I had the same thought as you here in Rome. Dirty and run down in many places. And all those black graffiti / tags on every building even the monuments.
Strange that those things change our view.
You did cover a lot on your own. The views from the higher points are just breathtakingly beautiful.
The trolleys are great to get higher up when it is hot outside and you are tired.
I haven’t visited, and probably won’t.
Thanks for your tour around @leaky20
Great photographs 😎
Happy Monday!
Yeah major cities tend to have that issue. Some more than others though. Rome doesn't surprise me in that regard. Sometimes the tourist effect makes it worse too.
Exactly…
And yes, the tourist effect doesn’t help either.
Two years to paint the road pink. Madness!
I hate it when the local wildlife tries to sell you drugs. They can be really pushy and that becomes even more annoying. I remember Amsterdam was really bad at one point for it.
Yeah I agree. I had to tell one guy that I wasn't interested 3 times. I don't stop moving when people approach.
Yeah I can't understand the road either. I assume there was more than one guy doing it. I would think that a small team of 4 people with rollers on poles could do 3 coats and a protective finish in a week or two. Why drag it out? There must be a day during the week when the bars shut down. Once a week in the evening for 4 weeks and done in a month tops hahaha 😆 it's a road so it's not like there is a lot of taping and cutting in and all that
Imagine how long it would take to get a house built or something. Hell, even a garden shed! 🤣
Lol 😂 yeah
No one has that kind of time
Beautiful photos, they tell well the places you have visited.
@tipu curate
Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 39/49) Liquid rewards.
Thanks I'm glad you liked them. Thanks for the support as well. I appreciate it. 😁
😂 what's with all the bras?????
I don't actually know but I thought it was funny. Lol
its pretty cool, much prefer them to the umbrellas
Haha yeah, true 👍
Beautiful shots of the city! Now my main question is, how many pastel de nata did you eat during your stay :D
Haha we ate a fair amount. Probably not as many as we should have but at least one per day lol.
Super well put together post. That's experience right there.
It's a beautiful city - the architecture and the tiles... wow!
Pity about the lack of decent governance or care for it but I reckon that's many cities around the world right now :/
The strangest thing and it sounds slightly unbelievable... but I had a dream about that square. Exactly there. Commerce Square you've called it i English.
I thought I had dreamed of Spain until I went through your post right now.
No. I've never been there but it was this place for sure... same colours, buildings and everything.
How weird is that?? 👀
Wow that is weird. It is a cool spot worth dreaming about. Was it a good dream?
I know, right?
I met someone there for coffee. That's all I remember.
How bizarre
I hope you find parts that are less dodgy
I would get hold of meeting lists for 12 step addiction recovery meetings in Lisbon amd hand them out to the dealers 😈
Tell them recovery is possible if they want to try a new way to live! 😁
Take care and enjoy the travels 🌸
Haha yeah that would be something. I wonder how that would go 😂
Thanks. I appreciate it.
I like the top view shoots they are beautiful and in uniform colors; but something bothers me...the bras! That looks funny!
Yeah the views were quite nice and there were many good look out points. I'm not sure what the bras were all about. Strange. Lol
That's so uniquely funny display but a good job in taking these great photos!
Yeah I'm sure that there is some funny tradition or reason for it but...shrugs shoulders.
Thanks. Have a nice day 😊
Your post made me think of revisiting Lisbon, you presented it extremely well, that's what I like to discover in a foreign country, local life, locals, traditions, history and especially traditional food.
Yeah I enjoy all of those things as well. We could have done better on the local food part. One of the nights we were too tired to go out so we just ate at the hotel and it wasn't great at all.
I hope to return to Lisbon soon because Portugal is always beautiful
Yeah Portugal was a great country to visit in general. We really liked it as well.

I've always heard of Lisbon as a beautiful and romantic place. And with your photography, I do really think it is. When will I ever come to such a dreamy place?
I'm not sure but hopefully you get to go at some point though 😁
