Snowboarding in Ehrwald, Austria

In my last #worldmappin #winterchallenge post, I remembered well how we went hiking up to the top of the mountain in Leogang. Back then I wished I had brought my snowboard, to slide down on the way back.

So this inspired me to tell you about my favorite ski slopes, where I went with a friend of mine. Not that long ago I took the day off and asked my friend Maria to join me for a snowboard day.

Conditions were perfect as the past few days it had been snowing a lot and that day the sun came out. Also, it was not the weekend - so it wouldn´t be too crowded on the slope.

From Munich to Ehrwald Almbahn is about 1,5 hrs drive. So we woke up pretty early, packed some food and drinks in our backpack, packed the car, and started driving to arrive just in time when the lift opens 08:00 o´clock.

Bildschirmfoto 2024-12-06 um 23.12.24.png

In general, the lift is open for skiing every day from the 13th of December 21st of April. Here you can see the live webcam of the slope to check out the weather yourself before you decide to go: https://www.almbahn.at/de/service/aktuelles/webcams/

From there we went with the cable car to the first restaurant /platform. The sun came out real quick and the view towards the Alps was awesome.

We decided to take another chairlift to go all the way up and then all the way down again. From there the view was even better and we were almost all by ourselves.

I love that ski area a lot because I have known it since I was little. When I was a kid it was pretty common to learn how to ski as soon as you can walk. So every winter we went skiing on every hill we could find. Later as a teenager I switched to snowboarding, as skiing was too boring for me, and with the snowboard, you can always sit down and enjoy the view, no matter where you are. (came in handy when I was still smoking cigarettes as well 😎)

The ski area of Ehrwald is very nice because the slopes are easy to slide down. Most of them are blue (easy) or red (moderate). The lifts are easy to ride and the view is always nice. The only bad thing that can happen is too many beginners taking all the space 😂 - but only on weekends or vacation time!

As I know the area very well I even know some shortcuts through the forest that are very fun to take.

That day we were almost by ourselves and could enjoy every ride at the fullest.

After a few hours of snowboarding, we went back to our starting point. The Ehrwalder Alm. There we decided to take a break, have some food and drinks, and enjoy the sun. The most common dishes at such an Alm is Currywurst /Schnitzel with fries or German dumplings with vanilla sauce.

After about 1 hour of chilling in the sun, we decided to go back on the slopes and snowboard a little bit more before the conditions turned worse.

In my experience, the morning hours are always the best because snow is still great. In the afternoon often the snow is gone, which means lots of ice ooor wet snow, which makes it even harder to slide. Again we went all the way up to the top and went down that slope a few times.

After that, we got tired and decided to go all the way back down again. We really enjoyed that last part a lot and took a few breaks to enjoy the amazing view.

Also, the sun left and it got cold. Of course, we also were pretty tired after so many hours of snowboarding, so it was good to not go straight down but take some breaks in between.

The last part of that day I will never forget. The sun was coming out one more time and the view was just stunning.

I have been to this ski area so many times but never have the conditions been better. Great weather, great snow, great accompaniment, not many people and good food. What else can you wish for?!?!

So I took 10 minutes sitting down on the slope and enjoyed the moment before we went down the last 30 minutes to the parking lot.

Driving home for the first 20 minutes we were stuck in traffic, but we still left at the right time, before rush hour, so we didn´t have too much traffic on our way home. As you can see in the video we had a good time anyway even on the ride home... but of course, once we arrived back in Munich we went straight to sleep.

What a great day! - I hope you liked it as much as we did 😍
Cheers,
Liz

Yes, really nice @day1001🐝🐝

Looks wonderful. It's handy when you are not too far from the mountains. It's a long trip for us. I've tried snowboarding, but prefer skiing. Not sure when I'll get to do it again.

That´s true @steevc. I should go way more often though. Traffic jam in morning and afternoon are horrible -especially on the weekends!

You're welcome my aunt ♥️
Keep up the great work 💪💪♥️

Hahaha that last video… awesome. So much fun in the car 🚗 (what else to do when stuck in traffic)
Beautiful slope and lucky there were not to many others.
The weather looked indeed perfect. I would have sat down for a while too, to take it all in.
Such stunning views.
Currywurst… it has been a while since I had one. Nom nom 😋
I haven't told you yet, the second country I lived in (2 till 6 years old) was Germany. My first language I spoke was German. My mom is from there.

Thanks for sharing! So beautiful 🤩

Hahaha yes, lots of fun. A shame that on youtube you can not have the original song (uptown funk-bruno mars).
Oh really? You are half German? How is your german now? did you keep the language? What part in Germany?
Glad you liked it @littlebee4 - let´s see if I can make it into the TD as well ;)

Oh… I will imagine the song with it 😎

Yes I am… the other half is Dutch. Born in France though… (to complicate things 😉) I am still fluent in German. I never lost it. Just need to switch 15 minutes during a conversation and all will come back.
My second language is Dutch. Than I learned Limburgs… only 13 years ago I learned english hahaha
When I lived in Spain I started to learn Spanish, I understand almost everything. Still learning.
Am learning right now 2 more languages. Oh, were do I find time 🕰️!LOL

We lived in several villages / cities in NRW, around and in Heinsberg. (Let’s say I moved a lot in my live. I stopped counting after 45 times and 8 countries further) 🫣

We made it wooohhooooo 🥳
!PIZZA to celebrate.

Oh so you are not only a world traveler but also a language freak, just like me 😆 What is Limburgs?
I grew up in Germany (German), learned English and Spanish in school, then lived in Mexico for 5 years (Spanish/English), then in Paris (French) - but never got fluent... don´t know but Paris people didn't motivate me much to learn it perfectly 😅 - Now I am learning Italian, as my wife is half Italian and I love Italy 🐝🐝 - Thats great. So if we ever meet in person, we will always have a secret language to talk to each other hehehe

Wow 45 moves and 8 countries? how old are you?! 😅 - I see, you are beating me on so many levels @littlebee4😜 - are you staying where you live now or already planning the next move ? 😎😅

Sounds like it. So cool 😎

Limburg is a Dutch dialect. From the south of the Netherlands in the province Limburg. I lived there mostly when I lived in the netherlands.

That sounds so great! You traveled (lived in more places) a lot like me.
I noticed that learning a language in the field so depends on where exactly you live.
The last countries… even if I spoke their language, everybody replied in english hahaha it is so much harder to learn then.

It is great you are learning Italian. It is a stunning country.
We will… our secret language hahaha 🤣

Don’t ask hahaha it looks like I moved every half year or so. Hahaha but I guess I am a bit older than you. Just passed my mid forties. 🫣

Nope, we will move in the next half year again… no idea when het or where we go to next. Depends of hubby finds a job and where.
I so wanted and need to settle… moving this much is exhausting. Believe me.

There are dialects in Dutch?! can you compare it to Bavarian in German? If yes, its like a whole new language haha.

Oh yeah, learning a language in a country were its spoken is so much easier.. but also depends on the mentality of the people. I am sure that in some french village, I would have learned it way faster than in Paris. - In general, I am not a fan of big cities anyway. Most people are always so stressed and superficial there. - Losing track of the essential things in life... But I guess Paris was especially hard as I was just coming from the Caribbean haha - total culture shock!

You mean in Sweden and Ireland it was easier to speak English? yeah, I guess in the northern part of Europe English is so easy for everyone.. almost like a second language. I guess pronunciation must be hard as well as speaking those languages. My BF is from Denmark. I do understand a lot because of German, but so hard to try to speak it. - Yeah! Italian is awesome - and so easy to learn if you already speak French and Spanish :D Grammar is almost the same, words are so similar.. only the endings are different.

You did move a lot!! How come?! You are almost like a Nomad Jackie! - Well older yes, but not a lot. I am in my mid-thirties. :)
Oh yeah.. well I loved getting around so much and sometimes I miss it.. but having a real home to come back to, and settling down is also nice. I never thought I would go back to Germany though... but Italy is not really a choice now with anti-gay politics.. with these conditions not many choices left. We live a little bit outside of Munich in a small village with many lakes around. So its a good place for now =)

There are so many dialects in the Netherlands… have a look here: Dialects in the Netherlands
Limburgs is like that… the northern Dutch people can not understand it hahaha 🤣

Yes… the big cities are harder. In a village where they speak their language you would have learned it so much faster.

More like Spain, France, Malta or even in Sweden. Even if I try to speak those languages they reply instandly in English. Thinking I’m english… but I am not hahaha

Yes, the english language will take over in the future. As it is so easy for many people to communicate in it.

Let’s say my parents moved a lot… I left home when I was 16 years old. After that, just life. Or work (hubby) related mainly the last 7 years. Not many were our choices.

I understand. It is such a shame. I hope it changes one day… that is, if you still want to move. Not many countries left I know.

I haven’t found “my” spot yet. How can I with so many moves throughout my entire life. We thought we would settle here but hubby hasn’t found a job yet in 1,5 + years. After we had to leave the UK. 🤨 So another move is probably needed. We will figure it out.

I did love the experiences and the things I learned. But now… I just want to settle. It is so time. I have to start my art studio up again. All my art materials are boxed up for about 4 years. We never stayed long enough anywhere to set up. I am an artist and photographer.

Why did the art thief's vehicle run out of fuel?
He had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh

Where is your favorite slope to go snowboarding @madeirane? 🐝🐝

If to talk about Austria, I have been only in Gastein, but mostly we used to go to Courchevel, France. I would love to try new places, new slopes.

Never heard of them. Are they nice? have to check them out one day.

Beautiful region to enjoy the outdoors, never had privilege of skiing or snowboarding it looks to be good fun!

Walked on snow nonetheless unique to an African, such beauty in the nature with girls doing it for themselves... Yeah way to go, now for the next run downhill....

Thanks @yummycruz1! It is indeed a lot of fun! I will make sure to go again this year. Until now its not enough snow though.. at least not on the German side of the Alps. What is harmattan?!

Harmattan is a dry and dusty wind that blows from late November to march.
Have fun snowboarding

Cool, never heard from it before.

Feel cool and have fun with a very beautiful view

Exactly. I love it when you slide down and have cool air in your face while doing sports. - Its great.

I wish someday I could go ice-skating too 🥰

Ohhh good idea! Here all the ice rinks are opening now. I should go and show you the best places to do so in Munich. Let´s see if I find the time <3 - Thanks for the inspiration. - Ice skating is sooo much fun as well @jane1289

I tried ice skating on an artificial ice rink.
.but I want a real one hehe..

Hahaha well, here most of them are artificial as well. Real ones are only at the lakes and as it doesn't really get thaaaat cold anymore (due to global warming), it is quite dangerous to go there, as ice is thin and you can break in.

Beautiful pictures ❤️
