Hi Hive community!
Before I crack on with my London part 2 post, I have been told I need to do an introduction post.
I would like to give a shout out and thanks to @thinkit for introducing me to the Hive community. Chris has been a great help getting me started (giving me HP) and guiding me with any problems i have had, and there have been lots of them and questions! He is a huge asset to the community! Also @livinguktaiwan for the support and giving me a top up of HP so i can post again!
My name is Dave and I am British, however I was born in Hannover Germany. The reason I was born into this nomadic life, is due to the fact my father was in the army serving in the first battalion scots guards and was posted in Germany at the time.
Growing up on various army bases around the world/ UK, I got very into my outdoor lifestyle (entertaining myself in the woods building dens and exploring). My mother worked 3 jobs and my dad was away for months at a time, hence the lots of time spent alone. My mother was born and raised in Hong Kong with her 2 brothers. My grandpa was in the RAF and posted in Hong Kong when he met my Grandma. So, in my early years I spent a fair amount of time in Hong Kong/ going back and forth.
Growing up we were always moving every year or so and I had to move school a lot. I went to 14 before the age of 9. My one constant in my life was my grandparents who have played a huge leading role in my life and I am hugely grateful for that. I see my grandpa as my father and was lucky enough to have a second mother in my grandma. I left home and moved out when I was 14.
This is where my interest in cars really took off. I bought my first car and took it apart. Rebuilt it. I enjoy using my hands and learn by doing. I bought a Clio RT and put a 5 turbo engine in it. Not what my taste now would have done, but that’s what young buys do. Since my first car I have completely rebuilt 6 cars and their engine. (this will be another post I do)Photo below is of my current car taken yesterday.
Fast forward 11 years (age of 25) and I have finished school in Edinburgh, university in Newcastle and working for a few years in Northern Ireland. After ending a dead-end relationship, I decided to follow my gut and go explore the world!
This is where life really began for me and as some might say the stars aligned. My first journey was to drive from Northern Ireland to Newcastle to see the family before continuing to drive down to Paris to see my sister who was studying there. I stayed here for a week and it so happened to be my 25th birthday. Please forgive the picture quality it was many years ago!
From there I drove back to Newcastle and flew to Dubai where I stayed for 3 weeks with a friend. (I will be doing a Blog for my 2 years spent traveling the world at a later date). From here I flew to Hong Kong where is stayed for 2 months with family. I did 6 months traveling Asia, Thailand is where I spent most of my time as I fell in love with the country. From here I went back to Hong Kong for a month then headed off to Australia. I spent a year in Australia before having to fly back to the Uk as my mum was ill.
From Newcastle I went to London to get a job as there were no prospects in Newcastle. I started working as an estate agent selling houses in Wimbledon. It was a great job and I did very well at it, however I was only in it for 5 months I then got a job in recruitment and this is where I hit my groove.
The year is 2015, coming towards the end of my first full year in London. This is when I met my beautiful wife and our proper adventures began! We both loved travel and visited many beautiful places. (The Photo below we took in Mykonos )
Fast forward 5 years and we left London in the midst of a lockdown and covid19. We made the move to follow our dreams to work and live in Thailand. Image below taken on Koh Phi Phi.
This is where we are now, even though in a lock down. I can think of a lot worse places to be locked down.
For work I work as an investor in commodities, equities and currencies. Which allows me to work anywhere in the world. I have been doing this for about 8 years now. And 2 years full time.
We enjoy sampling the different types of hotels available around the world. So a few of my blogs will be about some of the hotels we have stayed at. Along with lots of cool drone footage that I have filmed on my Mavic 2 pro of the islands and beaches here in Thailand (more emptiness due to covid).
Thank you for reading my blog and if you like what you read. Please give me a vote and comment. Even give me a follow to see my future content.
Next up London part 2 during lockdown! Not one to be missed!
Welcome Dave! Seeing this cool intro of yours, I am sure you will be doing great here on Hive ;) Greetings from another fellow nomad.
Hey Dave, great to see you do your introduction post. And you got a HK connection! Like your blog even more! My parents came from HK and I spent some years working out there but sadly its not the great place it used to be.
Anyway, if you have any questions feel free to ask anyone. @thinkit is also in Thailand and does some awesome travel stuff on Pinmapple, and @steevc does a lot of work supporting newbies and managing a Brit list on Hive. Whilst I lurk around both the travel and UK community 😊
Look forward to seeing you around.
Thanks @LivingUKTaiwan for the mention. We actually know each other! I've been telling him how great Hive is and how he should get blogging here. I've been trying to introduce this platform to a few of my friends as I think there are some great opportunities here. I wish I was more techy so that I could contribute apps and extensions to Hive like Pinmapple too.
It can be quite daunting and confusing as a newbie about which way to post, finding suitable tags, the dapps and creating your own style of writing. I've been here since 2017 but still a lot to learn and keep up with 👍
That explain everything!! No wonder a newbie knows about Pinmapple on his first post!!
It's great that you're bringing people on board, that's the best way, through word of mouth. Though maybe next time ask your friends to mention how they found out about Hive and the communities. In the past we've had newbies jump on board and know their way around everything like they've been around for ages, turns out they were alts created by users to milk the pool 😖!!!! Still a group of them around now.
If people know a new user is introduced to Hive by an existing user, it's adds a lot of creditability to their start. Fortunately Dave's intro was solid so didn't have that problem.
Thanks for supporting Pinmapple!! We appreciate that!
Yes I think I read about these duplicate accounts, vote circles and pools before. Not great when there are lots of people like us going at it alone taking time to plan decent post. Although our voting power might be low, hopefully we can contribute through what we post.
Will be introducing another friend soon when we get a chance to meet up, I will of course direct them to pinmapple... With a mention of me lol
@LivingUKTaiwan, you always seem to be a foundation of Hive knowledge. 👍
I spent so much time lurking around on Hive the past few years instead of doing more useful stuff IRL, so that probably helped 😂
And great stuff, get them all on Hive, particularly the good ones!! !
Thanks @livinguktaiwan
Yes I Know Chris @thinkit really well, he introduced me to Hive and has guided me on how to build and use it best! I didn’t know i could tag people in my posts. i think i will go edit it now and give him a mention. as I owe being on here to him. Also helped me every step of the way!!
It is such a small world!! Always great top meet likeminded people with a connection! Hong Kong is unfortunately is a shadow of its former self and not a great place to be at the moment.
I look forward to posting more so everyone can get to know me more. It is shocking about the duplicate accounts abusing the platform, which makes it harder for everyone else trying to post legitimately. Look forward to chatting more and seeing some of your posts!
Cheers mate - and fingers crossed you find success here. Some posts get missed, i'm not even sure why but just plugging away and interacting with matching communities and things should work out.

Welcome to Hive. There seem to be a few Brits living in Thailand. Lots of travel fans here even if it's been less viable lately. Have fun!

Hi @steevc, thank you for voting for me and @Pizzabot.
There are a fair few of us Brits living out here in Thailand, I am very new to the community only being here for the last 8 months! I am fortunate enough to still be traveling around Thailand which is empty of tourist at the moment so we can get to take in Thailands true beauty without being mobbed.
I hope you like my other post and keep following my journey.
Looks like you are doing well on Hive. Keep powering up and you vote will have some value. I would hope more people will be able to travel soon.

Hi @katrin-lux, thank you for your vote and comment. It is hard to find the line between to much and just enough i feel! I am glad you like the last photo, i have plenty more like it.
Hello @milliganstravels! I, too, am new to this platform, and how fantastic to already see an introductory post by someone I can so relate to :) We are quite the nomadic family ourselves, South-African-born but we now live in Zanzibar, moved here from Rwanda during the midst of 2020 covid lockdowns. I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future!
Nice introduction @milliganstravels. Welcome to Hive! I hope you achieve great things here and have a really good experience!
