Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

After exploring the centre of the village of Monção, we head to the fortress, where you can explore one of the greatest testimonies of medieval history in the Minho region of Portugal. Located on top of a hill, on the left bank of the River Minho, the fortress is an icon of the town and a point of reference for both locals and passers-by. Along the way, you can see how the fortress blends harmoniously with the natural and urban environment, creating a panorama of history, culture and breathtaking landscapes.

It is impossible not to be impressed by its grandeur. The main entrance is marked by the robust walls and towers, and makes us think of the defence of the territory and the town, which was a constant concern. The initial structure of the fortress dates back to the reign of King Dinis, in the 14th century, and was commissioned as a protective measure against Castilian invasions. Its strategic location allowed for privileged surveillance over the region, making the fortress a fundamental piece in the defence of the town.

We can walk along the walls and observe the architectural details that, although worn by time, still tell us stories of battles, sieges and resistance. One of the most interesting points is the Keep, which was once the main defensive structure.

The Monção village, with its narrow streets, dates back to medieval times and still maintains the charm of a peaceful and welcoming village. The River Minho, which runs alongside the town, not only offers spectacular views but is also one of the main tourist attractions in the region.

As in almost all the castles or forts we visited, here there is also a story or legend of the heroic defence of the town during the Fernandine Wars. During a siege by Castilian troops, the mayor's wife, Deus-a-Deu, showed courage by deceiving the enemy, thus preventing the town from surrendering. Legend has it that she ordered the last loaves of flour to be baked and, from the top of the walls, threw them to those who were besieging the town, saying that they were well supplied. This act of cunning and bravery led the Castilians to lift the siege, believing that they could not defeat the Portuguese through starvation.

Today, the Monção Fortress is classified as a National Monument, and its preservation allows us to better understand the impact of local history and medieval military architecture. The entrance gates, such as the Porta de Salvaterra and the Porta do Rosal, maintain their original features.
I still have a little more to show you of this lovely town, but that will be another day.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
