Hello everyone. Last year, I hiked through the mountains following the Moselsteig trail. Moselsteig is a popular long-distance hiking route in Germany. It stretches along the Moselle River, covering approximately 365 kilometers, starting from the city of Trier and ending in Koblenz.
This trail is considered one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Germany and consists of a total of 24 stages. This particular hike was Stage 21, which is officially 14 km long. But as we all know, it often turns out to be longer. I wasn’t alone that day. A man was walking ahead of me, coming from the same direction. Behind me there was an elderly couple. Since the weather was sunny after a rainy week, it seemed like everyone had decided to go out and enjoy the sunshine.
I continued my hike towards the back of the mountain. A part of the trail was decorated, but unfortunately, it was closed. Along the way I encountered two more people. There were old half-timbered houses in the area. I still had 9 km to go to my destination. I saw a warning sign indicating the path I needed to climb.
Using ropes I climbed up and reached what I thought was the final obstacle. Then I had to go up some stairs and climb down the rocks. The weather was extremely hot and I was out of breath. Many more adventures awaited me.
It turned out that this wasn’t the final obstacle. I had to climb a bit higher. Then I had to pass a few more steps where other people were also walking. Eventually I arrived at a place with vineyards. At the top of the mountain, there was a flag and a cross, located about half a kilometer away.
If I had gone straight I would have been 3.5 km away from my destination, but if I followed the trail, it would have taken me 5.5 km. My feet were tired, the weather was very hot and there wasn't even a bench in the shade to sit on. I sat for a while, but it was very hot since I was in the sun. I would have liked to take a longer break, but I had to continue.
Fortunately I didn't need to climb that cross. The man and woman behind me were a little behind the path I was walking. They decided to go down and it was possible to pass by going around from here, but I wasn't looking for easy paths. I followed the trail as it went. There was a small stone hut along the way, I thought I could sit there, but the bench was very uncomfortable, it was a log without a backrest. I had imagined a place where I could lean my back. Luckily there was a bit of wind, otherwise, it would have been really hot. It always felt hotter in the vineyards.
I was almost at my destination, according to the signs there was 1.5 km left. There was a crossroad here, which meant there must be a chapel up there. Usually in such places, there are scenes depicting Jesus journey to the cross. I climbed up. I think they wanted to show this path so that people could see the walking route and this beautiful angel.
This is the Angel of Peace monument. It was erected in memory of those who died in World War II. A small stream was flowing beside me and I continued my walk in the forest. My feet were already tired, especially in the places where I had to climb high rocks and pass through iron steps. Climbing with the iron bars was really exhausting. If it weren't for these difficult parts, the walk wouldn't have been so hard.
I continued towards the city, but I didn't know where my car was. Because I had come by circling the city and exited from a different exit.
Finally I found a bench. There were about 600 meters left to the city. I rested a bit and ate the cookies I had brought with me, which were melting in the heat. I was really tired when going downhill, but I had to eat these cookies or they would completely melt. Luckily they were very delicious.
And finally I arrived at the village. I went down and headed towards my car. I changed my shoes and completed my journey. Thank you for reading. See you on the next adventure.
