Hello my friends. I would like to tell you about our visit to the town of Monteriggioni, a city in the Tuscany region. I had been there once before and as far as I remember, it only had narrow streets and walls, but I really liked it. That’s why I was eagerly waiting for the day I would visit again. I want to share with you the unforgettable atmosphere of Tuscan towns.
Luckily the road was empty. There was a large paid parking lot and a spacious area, so we easily found a parking spot. First, we went to the main square. The most important thing to do here is to walk along the city walls. I also noticed a church, but I wasn’t dressed appropriately to visit it that day. So, I just peeked inside from the door. The exterior of the church was quite simple because this town was founded in the early 13th century. I assume the church dates back to that period as well, but the sign mentioned the late 13th century. Still I had guessed the century correctly.
Right in the middle of the square, there is a well, an essential structure for any town. It was vital for life during the Middle ages. Today this town square serves as the tourism hub of the village. There are a few bars and restaurants here. After wandering around for a while, we sat down at one of them.
I love tasting local wines and here, they had wine made from Sandrivu grapes. In one of my posts, someone had asked if people still live in such medieval villages. Yes and the presence of cars proves it. One of the greatest beauties of Italy is this, walking through places that feel like an open-air museum while also witnessing how the past, the history you might only read about in books elsewhere, intertwines with real life in the 21st century.
We walked along a 20 meter long path through the old city walls. There is also a passage on the other side of the walls, which leads to a museum. The cashier honestly told us that the museum would be more interesting for children. On one hand, the entrance fee seemed a bit high, but on the other hand, it would have felt strange to come all this way and not see the walls. So, since we were here, we decided to visit. However, you shouldn’t expect a big "wow" factor. The visit to the walls was short, we basically took a brief tour.
And so, our little town tour came to an end. It’s really a small town, with just two or three streets and a few back alleys. But even though it’s small, the time spent here is valuable and unforgettable. In places like this, time flies by so quickly.
Dear friends, I hope you enjoyed this little journey. Maybe it will inspire you to discover a new place. Thank you for reading. Wishing you a wonderful week. See you soon!
