Travel to Guadeloupe part 6 (En/Fr)

in Worldmappin17 hours ago

The sixth step of my trip to Guadeloupe in January was a visit to the Saintes islands.
This is a small archipelago of ilets south of the main islands, comprising mainly the ilets of Terre-de-Haut (where we stayed for three nights) and Terre-de-Bas.
It is served by several sea links, but we opted for the shortest one from Trois-Rivières, which was a good thing, as the sea was very rough and we were very shaken up, some passengers threw up and I kept my gaze fixed on the horizon to avoid doing the same.
Les Saintes is very close to Dominica further south, where I plan to go one day.

Les Saintes is one of Guadeloupe's most touristy spots, often compared to the Riviera.
Numerous sailboats are anchored in the cove and large cruise ships regularly stop over, but tourists generally only stay for the day.
There are virtually no cars here, so everyone uses electric buggies, and a few brave souls ride bicycles, but the roads are very steep.
In the evenings, there's a bit of entertainment, as there's a UCPA center offering sailing courses.

Iguanas can also be found here, in street art but also in real life if you're a bit careful, as they don't move around much.
The only swordfish we saw was on a restaurant sign, but due to the rough sea, the fishermen didn't come out.
We'd also planned to go catamaran sailing, but that wasn't possible.

We were staying in a beautiful wooden house with a kitchen on the terrace, it was close to a pond and I was worried about mosquitoes, but there weren't any more than elsewhere, and we enjoyed the singing of the frogs.
We sampled a number of Ti'Punch, for which I'll give the Guadeloupean recipe in another post.

For swimming and snorkeling, we mostly went to Pompierre beach, which is beautiful and full of fish to see and pelicans fishing while diving.
There is some seaweed (sargasso) on the shore, but it's not a nuisance.
Very important too, there are no Mancenilliers on this beach, as they are toxic and very dangerous trees, so don't eat or touch their fruit, and don't take shelter under them when it's raining, as they can cause corrosive burns. They are marked with a red cross.
Close to the beach there was a small restaurant where we ate our first Ouassous (shrimps), prices were very affordable at around 20€ a menu and the gendarmes used to pick up their takeaways there which is a good indicator, we did the same for our evening meals.

The main place to visit in Les Saintes is Fort Napoléon, a defensive structure that was never used and has been turned into a very interesting museum, which we visited.
There are beautiful views from up there and a lovely cactus garden.

This was the penultimate leg of my trip to Guadeloupe, and I hope you enjoyed the photos, which were taken by my wife and me.

The travel experience is great. Actually this place is incredibly beautiful and I was surprised to see the beauty of nature here. You have shared your travel experience in a great way. And this place looks so beautiful that I want to travel here. Best wishes

Thanks for your comment, actually I was surprised to see how beautiful is this island, my previous big trip was to Tahiti, and Guadeloupe is a lot like it, except that there's no coral reef.
