What would become of towns and cities if there were no squares? Where would the tired go to sit for a while? Where would friends or lovers meet? Or where would those who simply want to stop and watch take a break?
I was in this last category the day I went to visit Montilla Square, although I have been there many times, this occasion was different because my goal was to review it here in my blog.
Located in the historic center of La Victoria, Aragua state, this square precedes the impressive Montilla Barracks, and is built at a higher level than the surrounding streets.
I went to the back of the square, just in front of the barracks, to take general shots. The walkways are made of terracotta floor and form a crossroads where the bust of General Mariano Montilla stands, but most of the space is made up of gardens.
This place has a lot of vegetation, both tall trees, palm trees, as well as cactus, bougainvillea, among other plants that beautify and give freshness to the environment.
As the square is in a military zone, if you approach the entrance to the barracks you may be noticed because it is a restricted area. They sometimes give guided tours inside this castle, as many call it, but I have not yet had the opportunity to attend.
Let us now see the bust of the protagonist of this square, General Mariano Montilla, which is placed in the center of the space on a pedestal adorned with classical columns.

According to what I saw at the foot of the monument, this work is by Julio Roversi, I looked for information on the Internet about him and found that he arrived in Venezuela from Italy in 1882 to work on the railroad, and then devoted himself to sculpture. It does not appear what year this bust is from, but the author died in Caracas in 1920.

I didn't get any information about the inauguration date of the square either, but the Venezuelan Cultural Heritage Catalog does state that its construction was possible thanks to the people's contribution.
Although in general it looks very beautiful, there are parts of the square that need to be fixed, such as the base of the monument, parts of the walkway, the perimeter sidewalks, stairs and replacement of the grass.
Mariano Montilla Square was declared a Municipal Monument in 1990, and is undoubtedly a must-see if you visit La Victoria and its beautiful historic center.
