Panathinaikó Stadium, site of the first Olympic Games of the modern era / Estadio Panathinaikó, sede de los primeros Juegos Olímpicos de la era moderna

As a new edition of the Olympic Games, Paris 2024, has already started, in my previous post I told you about the origin of this sporting event, and this time I share a visit I made a few years ago to the Panathinaiko stadium in Athens, Greece, venue of the first Olympic Games of the modern era, held in 1896.

Located in the heart of Athens, in the neighborhood of Pangrati, between two hills with pine trees, it is one of the places you must see if you are in the Greek capital. As soon as you approach it, its brightness catches you, and it is because it was built entirely in white marble, so it is also known as “Kalimarmaro”, which means good marble.

The Panathinaiko is one of the oldest stadiums in the world. In 330 B.C., there was previously one made of wood, where the Panathenaic Games were held, an annual sports competition in honor of the goddess Athena that included athletics, wrestling, equestrian and even music or beauty. It was then rebuilt in marble in 329 B.C., later, in 140 A.D., it was renovated, and much later, in 1895, it was improved to host the Olympic Games of 1896.

Being old, it doesn't have the measures that are currently used in athletics stadiums, however it has been used for some special events. For example, in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, the archery competition was held there and it was also used to finish the marathon. It has also been used to celebrate the country's sporting achievements and musical shows, as it has a capacity for 50,000 people.

I visited the stadium in the middle of summer, when the whole city is full of tourists, but the day I went it wasn't open to the public, I don't know why, so I couldn't get in and take the tour of the track, the stands and all it has to offer.

But since its structure is open, with no walls or anything to hide it, at least I could see it quite well from the outside.

What do you think of this jewel of sport and architecture? I hope you enjoyed this brief tour.
