The charming Olinda - Brazil Series #6 [ENG-ESP]

After getting to know a bit of the hectic capital of the state of Pernambuco, Recife, the next day I decided to go to a quieter place with more of a past, Olinda, a small colonial town whose historic center was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982 and is among the best preserved in Brazil. It is about 6 km from Recife and I arrived there by bus, which dropped me off at Do Carmo Square, in the heart of the historic center.

Después de conocer un poco la agitada capital del estado de Pernambuco, Recife, al otro día decidí ir a un lugar más tranquilo y con más pasado, Olinda, una pequeña ciudad colonial cuyo casco histórico fue declarado Patrimonio Mundial en 1982 y que está entre los mejor conservados de Brasil. Queda a unos 6 Km de Recife y llegué allá en autobús, el cual me dejó en la Plaza do Carmo, en pleno centro histórico.

My travel guide had a map of Olinda and recommendations of what to see, and that was what I was going to use to tour the place, but as soon as I walked a bit through the square a man approached me and told me that he was a certified guide of the city (he had his card) and if I wanted he could give me the guided tour that lasted about two hours, as I found the rate to be economical, I opted for his offer and we started the tour.

Mi guía de viaje tenía un mapa de Olinda y recomendaciones de qué ver, y era lo que iba a utilizar para recorrer el lugar, pero apenas caminé un poco por la plaza se me acercó un hombre y me dijo que era guía certificado de la ciudad (tenía su carnet) y si quería podía hacerme la visita guiada que duraba unas dos horas, como la tarifa me pareció económica, opté por su oferta e iniciamos el paseo.

At first we walked through a flat part, but quickly appeared the ascent because Olinda is located around a hill, so its streets go up, down and take different directions. Everywhere you look you will see interesting buildings that will not let you put your camera down, it is an ideal place to take pictures.

Al principio caminamos por una parte plana, pero rápidamente apareció el ascenso porque Olinda está ubicada alrededor de una colina, así que sus calles van subiendo, bajando y tomando diferentes direcciones. A cualquier lado que mires verás edificaciones interesantes que no te dejarán soltar la cámara, es un sitio ideal para fotografiar.

The guide, who spoke a little Spanish or "portuñol" (a mixture of Portuguese and Spanish), was telling me some things about the history of the city, such as its foundation by the Portuguese in 1535 and that it was originally the capital of Pernambuco.

El guía, que hablaba un poco de español o "portuñol", me fue contando algunas cosas de la historia de la ciudad, como su fundación por los portugueses que data de 1535 y que fue originalmente la capital de Pernambuco.

Being a coastal city, Olinda was exposed to dangers such as piracy, and as it was the richest city in Brazil between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Dutch soon arrived and invaded it. In 1631 it was sacked, burned and many of its buildings were destroyed.

Al ser una ciudad costera, Olinda estaba expuesta a peligros como la piratería, y como entre los siglos XVI y XVII era la ciudad más rica de Brasil, los holandeses no tardaron en llegar e invadirla. En el año 1631 la saquearon, incendiaron y muchas de sus edificaciones fueron destruidas.

The Portuguese regained their dominion in 1654 and began the reconstruction, especially of the numerous churches and chapels that are in this city. Religious architecture predominates here and as for the houses and buildings for other uses, the style is the Portuguese of that time but with some changes due to the hot climate of the area.

Los portugueses recuperaron su dominio en 1654 e iniciaron la reconstrucción, sobre todo de las numerosas iglesias y capillas que hay en esta ciudad. Aquí predomina la arquitectura religiosa y en cuanto a las casas y edificaciones para otros usos, el estilo es el portugués de aquella época pero con algunos cambios debido al clima caluroso de la zona.

One of the religious buildings we visited was the Basilica and Monastery of São Bento, a baroque style complex located on a hill. It was originally completed in 1599 but after the Dutch attack it suffered a lot of damage, being rebuilt in 1656 and enlarged in later years. The guide told me that the altar of this church was quite impressive, made of cedar wood and gold plated, so I went in to see it. In the center is the image of Sâo Bento (St. Benedict).

Una de las edificaciones religiosas que visitamos fue la Basílica y Monasterio de São Bento, un complejo de estilo barroco que está en una colina. Originalmente fue terminado en 1599 pero tras el ataque de los holandeses sufrió muchos daños, siendo reconstruido en 1656 y ampliado en los años posteriores. El guía me comentó que el altar de esta iglesia era bastante impresionante, hecho con madera de cedro y chapado en oro, así que entré a verlo. En el centro está la imagen de Sâo Bento (San Benito).

We continued the tour and I could see a first panoramic view of Olinda and its antiquity and in the distance the city of Recife and its modernity.

Continuamos el tour y pude ver una primera panorámica de Olinda y su antigüedad y a lo lejos la ciudad de Recife y su modernidad.

Let's say that Olinda is the bohemian neighbor, there is a great cultural atmosphere, many artists live here and that's why besides the churches and other historical buildings, you can visit museums, art galleries and artisans' workshops. Everything is very colorful, as for example one of the places we visited: the Mamulengo Museum.

Digamos que Olinda es la vecina bohemia, hay gran ambiente cultural, viven muchos artistas aquí y por eso aparte de las iglesias y otras edificaciones históricas, se pueden visitar museos, galerías de arte y talleres de artesanos. Todo es muy colorido, como por ejemplo uno de los sitios por los que pasamos: el Museo del Mamulengo.

Mamulengos are very popular puppets in northeastern Brazil and during carnival time, an event that is celebrated in Olinda in a big way, they are taken to the streets in giant size to entertain the public.

Los mamulengos son títeres muy populares del nordeste brasileño y en época de carnaval, evento que en Olinda se celebra a lo grande, los sacan a la calle en tamaño gigante para entretener al público.

We continue through the steep streets, some of them cobblestone, where at every step you can't stop delighting with the architecture and in general the whole environment, Olinda is undoubtedly charming.

Seguimos por las empinadas calles, algunas empedradas, donde a cada paso no paras de deleitarte con la arquitectura y en general todo el entorno, sin duda Olinda es encantadora.

In one of those streets I saw a very cozy place where they sold ice cream and other refreshing things, I went in to buy and also take a picture in their nice patio with some hummingbirds or beija-flor as they call them in Brazil.

En una de esas calles vi un lugar muy acogedor donde vendían helados y otras cosas refrescantes, entré para comprar y también tomarme una foto en su lindo patio con unos colibríes o beija-flor como los llaman en Brasil.

Then we arrived at one of the most visited spots in Olinda, Alto da Sé, and I immediately understood why, the views from the viewpoint here are spectacular, starting with the sea and the lush vegetation that adorns everything.

Luego llegamos a uno de los puntos más visitados de Olinda, Alto da Sé, e inmediatamente entendí por qué, las vistas desde el mirador que hay aquí son espectaculares, empezando por el mar y la frondosa vegetación que adorna todo.

The guide told me that I could not miss the Panoramic Elevator, a modern construction of 20 meters high from which you get a 360º view of Olinda and its surroundings. There was an entrance fee but it wasn't expensive, so I didn't miss it 😃.

El guía me dijo que no podía dejar de subir al Elevador Panorámico, una construcción moderna de 20 metros de altura desde la que obtienes una visión º360 de Olinda y sus alrededores. Había que pagar entrada pero no era cara, así que no me lo perdí 😃.

Those blue awnings you see in the following pictures are the Artisan's Market in Da Sé Square.

Esos toldos azules que ven en las siguientes fotos son el Mercado Artesanal de la Plaza da Sé.

And now look at this tropical rainforest...

Y miren ahora esta selva tropical…

Another incredible view from the elevator is that of Da Sé Church or Cathedral of Olinda, for me because of the contrast of the building with the turquoise sea.

Otra de las vistas increíbles desde el elevador es la de la Iglesia da Sé o Catedral de Olinda, para mí por el contraste de la edificación con el mar color turquesa.

Of course the city of Recife is not left out of these panoramic views.

Por supuesto la ciudad de Recife no se queda afuera de estas vistas panorámicas.

And I didn't want to either, when I got off the elevator I saw an ideal spot and took the opportunity to have the guide take a picture of me at this strategic point.

Y yo tampoco quise, al bajar del elevador vi un lugar ideal y aproveché para que el guía me tomara una foto en este estratégico punto.

The tour with the guide was almost over and we went down some less crowded streets, there I saw some buildings not so well maintained but just as photogenic, the abandonment also has its charm.

Faltaba poco para terminar la ruta con el guía y fuimos bajando por algunas calles menos concurridas, por allí vi algunas construcciones no tan bien cuidadas pero igual de fotogénicas, el abandono también tiene su encanto.

We returned near the starting point, Do Carmo Square, and there I said goodbye to the guide, but not before asking him to take another picture of me next to a picturesque little train that makes circuits through the historic center of Olinda.

Volvimos cerca del punto de inicio, la Plaza do Carmo y allí me despedí del guía, no sin antes pedirle que me hiciera otra foto junto a un pintoresco trencito que hace circuitos por el casco histórico de Olinda.

Then I went to look for a place to eat because it was noon and I found a nice Creperie. Something I noticed is that in Brazil they seem to really like this French dish, I saw several places that prepare it in different cities.

Luego me fui a buscar un lugar para comer porque era mediodía y encontré una agradable Crepería. Algo que noté es que en Brasil parece gustarles mucho este platillo francés, vi varios locales que lo preparan en diferentes ciudades.

Before taking the bus back to Recife, where I was staying, I walked a bit more around the city and captured some not so old buildings, such as the colorful houses and the cinema with its striking art deco architecture, ending my walk near the beach.

Antes de tomar el autobús de regreso a Recife, donde me estaba hospedando, caminé un poco más por la ciudad y capté algunas edificaciones no tan viejas, como las coloridas casas y el cine con su llamativa arquitectura art deco, terminando mi paseo cerca de la playa.
