How can you become a national hero? Are aspirants required to accomplish tremendous feats to be recognized as one? Not really.
As law-abiding citizens of an active country, being genuinely patriotic is certainly one of the best symbolic gestures that show respect, support, and love for your motherland. Isn't it?
Here's another way, in my opinion. I firmly believe that one can become a national hero by sincerely promoting their own nation’s emblematic monuments and built environments - especially the travel destinations that feature notable government institutions.
I take pride in practicing these heroic acts while traveling in my very own country. Though the current leadership system isn't flawless, we’ve nevertheless achieved much success as a result of the incredible historical heritage accumulated over the years. Responsible freedom, mutual growth, and independent lifestyles are some of the favorable perks of thriving in a democratic society like ours.
The Philippine metropolis of Davao is no exception. I’ve always admired the esteemed city officials behind their successful governance, most importantly the extraordinary buildings where they hold office.
While strolling along San Pedro Street, one of the oldest thoroughfares within Davao City’s historic district, I stumbled upon one such building. Known as the Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Dabaw, it’s an imposing edifice you absolutely can’t miss. This is where the Davao City Council conducts their periodic meetings and sessions, creating local policies, ordinances, and resolutions that impact their beloved community.
Location-wise, this legislative organization is just a short walk away from the Davao City Hall, the locality’s administrative center. It’s also openly visible if viewed from the historic San Pedro Cathedral, an architectural jewel of religious significance. It surely wasn’t difficult for curious tourists like me to find it.
“Wow, what a beautiful park!” How could I ignore the lush greens that surrounded the area, right? Flourishing trees, plants, shrubs, and flowers were well-distributed around, decorating the pathways, steps, and gardens. My eyes wandered as far as they could see, appreciating the remarkable natural habitat that beautified this outdoor space.
And lo and behold, there it was!
“Isn’t that an incredibly majestic building?” I thought.
Dwarfed while standing in front of the Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Dabaw’s enormous frontage, I simply couldn't take my eyes off its spectacular colonnaded facade topped by a triangular roof.
In fact, the entire exterior reminded me of the ancient Roman temples, a significant legacy of classical architecture. Since time immemorial, these types of design styles characterized buildings with the symbolic interpretations of authority, prestige, and power. Quite fitting for a government institution such as this one, correct?
Would that be your first impression too?
Moreover, how could I overlook the artistic monument standing in front of it? Moving closer, I noticed that it was a stunning sculptural exhibit that appeared like a creative rendition of heroic personalities.
However, I wasn’t familiar with the precise story of this depicted event. Yet, I had the strong feeling that it had something to do with the specific region’s history. This commemorative plaque with its descriptive narration will hopefully enlighten you with more background. Take time to read the interesting information engraved on it.
“Isn’t that an awesome work of art?!” I asked a passerby. She nodded back repeatedly with a smile.
The entire memorial stood at the park’s central point and consisted of an elevated concrete pedestal with deep fluted surfaces, supporting the sculptural artworks mounted on top. Its enclosure was adorned by a small garden protected by white wrought iron bars. And its massive base looked like it was cladded in granite. It was certainly a thoughtful masterpiece crafted by talented hands! Do you agree?
Not too many bystanders were present during that occasion. Thus, I had the perfect chance to capture as many unobstructed visuals as I possibly can of this monument’s beauty. For your travel reference, the iconic San Pedro Cathedral can be seen on the left side of the photo frame. It’s nearly impossible to get lost in this touristic neighborhood with the presence of this famous church.
