Castel Sant'Angelo, the unmissable landmark of Rome, Italy
Hello travelers from around the world
I couldn't stay away from Rome, being one of my favorite cities, so today I will share with you another amazing place in the capital of Italy, a page from the history of Rome, and yes, today we are visiting the Castel Sant'Angelo.
While we stayed in Rome our trips were made by public transportation, it is a quite efficient way to get around in a very crowded city, especially we chose the buses because their stops were the closest to our objectives and especially to the hotel where we had accommodation.
I can say that a walk through the streets of Rome is an amazing experience, everywhere you look you will see a page of history.
After a short stroll through the crowded streets of Rome, a circular building, not very tall but strategically positioned, catches our eye.
As if I had no more patience to cross that stone bridge and enter that building to see what is there, as you have realized I arrived near the Castel Sant'Angelo.
Before going any further, I want to give you a tip, if you are in Rome and have decided to visit this castle, buying tickets online is the most effective way to avoid the endless queues in front of the castle.
We made the mistake of not buying our tickets online and had to wait quite a long time (access was controlled and limited).
After about an hour of standing in line we also managed to buy our entrance tickets, the cost of an entrance ticket is 13euro/person, and the visiting program is daily between 9-7, the program may be different in the winter months, another important aspect is that the castle is closed on public holidays.
Come with me to explore this castle and see if it is worth a visit.
From the very first steps, we see on display many historical exhibits that, long ago, were true works of art.
A short history lesson before we continue our tour of the castle.
Castel Sant'Angelo was completed in 139 AD and served as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian and his family. Legend has it that it got its name from the archangel Michael, who appeared above the castle with his sword, symbolizing the end of the Roman plague of 590 that struck the city. That's why a statue of an angel was later added in the same place. The original marble one stands in the inner courtyard of the castle, while the one above it is a bronze replica.
Since 1277, the castle has been connected to the Vatican by a passageway ("Passetto di Borgo"), an 800-meter-long corridor over a high wall, which still exists today. This could have been used by priests and popes as a perfect escape route in the event of a siege of the Vatican. Also of note is Hadrian's tomb because a year after his death in 138, the remains of the emperor and his wife were buried here. Over the course of time, several emperors wished to sleep their eternal sleep here, so the site of Hadrian's Tomb is known as the Treasure Chamber.
Visiting the castle is made very easy, here you will find informative panels that will guide you how to see every corner of the castle without missing any place, so you can enjoy a complete history lesson.
And for a perfect experience I give you a tip and climb to the top level where you can enjoy a view of the city and St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
Dear visitors, I end today's post here by saying that I had an amazing experience visiting the Castel Sant'Angelo, another history lesson specific to Rome.

Wow, what a treasure. I haven't been to this part of Rome and didn't have enough time, to be honest, to discover such a historical treasure. I must admit this is not a typical castle. Seeing the era and timeline of the castle, I must admit it is still in good shape. Buying tickets online is always handy; I have made the same mistake and had to wait long to enter Pantheon...
Thanks for sharing...
Rome is amazing and even though I was there for 5 days (4 nights), I didn't manage to see everything I wanted to see, but there is still something to do next time, of course, apart from Rome, I have a few more cities I want to visit.
Indeed this castle is still in a very good condition considering its age, anyway Rome is a history book ready to be discovered, I can't wait to write a few more posts with my experiences in Rome.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you very much @jlinaresp and @visualshots.

I was very impressed by the builing. There was also (maybe is still today) a small café where you can have a phantastic view over the city while drinking your espresso!
You are absolutely right, even now there is a cafe up there, it is a dream to sit at a table with a good coffee in front of you and admire the view of the city, something spectacular.
Thanks so much for stopping by.
I forgot to thank you very much for your support😉
