The summer birds have already arrived, but snow is still frequent and the areas along the shores of Lake Superior are still covered in snow and ice. This series was taken last week - on the 28th of March... when we felt the need to visit the Lake once more.
I took some pictures along here last September, though I haven't dug them out since our recent move to our new apartment. I can tell you now, though, that all that ice and snow is covering beautiful Chequamegon Bay. (That's pronounced shuh-WAH-meh-gone.)
Maslowski Beach is just west of Ashland, Wisconsin. We like visiting this park as it lets us get in touch (literally) with Lake Superior. It is still my goal to live nearer this beautiful lake - I'm just not there yet.
Winter is typically long here - and not the on-again-off-again thing that I learned to loathe in Wyoming. Here, it typically starts snowing in November and keeps going through March... with some extra snows in both October and April. Not too different than Wyoming, but here, we get to keep the snow and enjoy it a bit more. (Though there are many here who complain bitterly about it!)
Still, the snowy winter is part of the Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula (Michigan) culture and part of what makes the people who they are.
My first husband and his family moved to neighboring Minnesota back in '76. From England, they were fairly ignorant about the typical winters in this part of the country. They drove around seeing all these snow-covered "fields"... it wasn't until the spring thaw that they realized that many of those "fields" were, in fact, lakes! (Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes.)
I love this area!

Thank you! Yes, it takes a different kind of person to enjoy this climate, but it's a place I can easily love. :) Thanks for visiting.

Now I was born in Northern Illinois, but grew up in Southern Wisconsin (Janesville area). I graduated from UW Madtown with a BA in French. And although 25 years ago I would say that Wisconsinites had the best and kindest mentality of all of the U.S. of A., today I don't know as I fled the -20° to -50° weather for the South of France where I lived for 26 years. In all honesty, I think Wisconsin is a breathtakingly beautiful state. It's known for great attractions like The Dells, Spring Green, The House on the Rock, Little Norway, Cave of the Mounds, as well as the many buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright🤩 The problem with Wisconsin is the crazy ass extreme weather and not so much the beautiful white snow. With winters a calm -20 to -50° then Summers of 90 to 110° with 60% plus humidity and let's not forget a childhood of hiding from tornados 🤣🤣😅 And as Winter usually starts in Fall and Summer during Spring, I usually recommend visiting in September and May LOL😝 But it is definitely well worth the visit and I say pop and tennis shoes🤣
P.S. still gotta get me that cheese hat and go Pack!👏👏🏈🏆🙏💞
Cool. I lived in Madtown 92-95, so I totally get the extreme weather from -45 to -60 windchills in the winter to 125 heat index in the summer... not many places in the world where you get 180 degree swings like that! I've never seen an actual tornado yet, but I've watched the storms that produced them in Madtown - and even saw a weak funnel cloud in Wyoming, lol. But I love Wisconsin because of that, not in spite of. Though I'd rather be further north - like on Superior's shores - where I am now, on the edge of Da Northwoods, is pretty good too. (Though we did have a tornado warning in December!) You're not wrong about the best visiting times though! I returned in September. Strangely, it was my first time in Wisconsin that got me saying soda, not pop (which I grew up with on the North Oregon coast) and they say soda here as well... lol
Cheesecurds are awesome, btw! Strange, that growing up in another heavy dairy area, that we never had that luxury! (Tillamook being a major company in my hometown area - famous for awesome cheddar.) But now, I live near the origin of Colby cheese, so also awesome!
Thanks for visiting and watch out for deer!
Haha! I actually got the pop expression from my grandpa in Northern Illinois😝 We had tons of cheese curds in Southern Wisconsin, but my faves were the battered mushrooms😋 Funny enough, I've never even seen lake Superior, only lake Michigan. Never seen a tornado with my own eyes. Too busy hiding out in the basements lol😅 But had a few swirling around not so very far away😬 Did you do your studies in Madtown? I did from '87-'91 but stayed there till '96 when I left for France. Funny, just missed ya😃
I drifted there. I had entertained the thought of going back to school, but that never happened. I was there '92-'95 when my first husband finished up his computer engineering degree...
Amazing place and photos 💜
Thank you!
