Let's Camp in Otranto || Italy

in Worldmappin2 years ago (edited)

Last November, my friend Patricia came to join me on a little roadtrip through the south of Italy. I decided to take her to Otranto, a small city in the south of Italy. The city was located next to the sea, and it was the perfect place for a couple of nights as Patricia really loves the sea. We found a beautiful spot to park on the app Park4Night, just out of the city, next to the ocean. The city was just a few minutes' walk away from our home on wheels, so that was just perfect + we woke up every morning with a beautiful ocean view and a coffee at the beach.

This is the spot we found in the app Park4Night, one of the apps I often use to find a place to park and sleep. They aren't always this pretty though

And this is the little beach next to the van. Maybe not the most beautiful but I really loved its rough looks. We went in this direction for a walk as well, not to the direction of the city but to the other direction. It felt really good to just walk out of the van into the nature, see the birds fly over the sea, while lizards are just sunbathing on the rocks

A stroll to the town

To walk to the town, we had to follow the dirt road for some minutes before we passed by the harbour. The seawater was very clear, the weather was sunny. It was a good day and it felt really nice to have my good friend with me for some silly talks while strolling along the harbour talking about which boat we would pick among many other conversations.

The next place we passed by the Torre Matta, the watchtower from Otranto. This place definitely gave Otranto some good old Italian historical vibes, as most Italian places have, but every city is unique in its own way.
From up here, we had a nice overview of the ocean and the city. I actually took the pictures of the harbour from here since the view is pretty nice from here.

To go to the beach we wanted to visit, we had to walk through the shopping streets. There was almost nobody out there as it is the off season. I have no clue where the locals are but not here at least.

The city center, I took a picture of this clothingstore since I believe these kinds of ceilings are really beautiful and unique, although they seem to be very common here in Italy. Anyway, they impress me

We walked a bit through the empty streets towards the beach, which was supposed to be really beautiful with blue water, and it was! The beach was small but really nice and the water was so clear! In Holland, the water is not clear at all, and I have never seen water as clear and beautiful as this in Europe. I feel like I really want to return to this corner of Europe next September, when the water is still warm enough to swim but the tourists are already gone. The world keeps surprising me with its beautiful places. I am very thankful that having a van gives me the opportunity to work, explore and travel to these kinds of places.

*Otranto's beautiful beach. Patricia was looking for shells. We initiallty planned to swim this day, but the water felt too cold. I guess we aren't so brave, But it was still really nice to walk on the bech and over the short, dead-end trail in the picture at the left. Next time we will take some beers!*

Thanks for passing by, I hope you liked my little blog about Otranto!

It looks really amazing over there!! I especially love the castle! I have a fancy for such things... I swear ill fall back in time and imagine how they fought wars over there😂

Make the best of itt😎😎

Oh yeah, I was also wondering what that times looked like, life was a lot different those times. But I am happy to be born now instead of then 😅

The lizard reminded me back when we hiked and encountered a green-colored snake.. Then after that, we easily freaked out when seeing wild creatures like the lizard similar to the one in the photo 😂. we thought it was a snake

Oh that sounds awful! I wouldn't feel that for snakes but I guess I have that feeling for spiders so I can relate 😂

Otranto is a beautiful location and having the ocean right at your doorstep must have been amazing.Waking up to the ocean view and having coffee at the beach every morning sounds like a great way to start the day.

Oh yeah it is amazing! I love the moment of waking up and brushing teeth on the beach the most. Than I realize how not normal it is and how blessed I am!

beautiful your Van I was planning to buy one myself but then inflation drove the prices to a crazy level

It is still worth it! It might also possible to buy one in an other country. I bought mine in Belgium as they are lots cheaper there. Next time I might even look for a van in Zwitserland as they can be cheap there. I don't know about the prices in Italy though (assuming you are Italian)

I have never traveled by a van. Nowadays, I see so many people trying this lifestyle that it makes me think that maybe it's not so bad 🙂 I like the luxury of having a bathroom but on the other hand having the freedom to travel where ever you want and to wake up with fantastic views every time sounds convincing too 🙂

Oh, color of water in Holland really can't be compared to Italy 🙂 it's way too different.

The city looks pretty and I would love to be in that place right now 😉

Thank you for sharing!

Oh I really love it! I am so happy to be able to travel with my own space and own bed. When I was in Albania, I rented an appartement when the van was at the workshop, and the van came back one day earlier than expected but I still had one night of appartement left. At 12 o'clock at night, I left to sleep in my own van. No place feels like home than that van. I am currently in Austria, and my room here is nice, but I miss the van.

But there are of course things I miss in the van, like good hot showers with unlimited water, I have to be mindful about water and electricity all the time, and every few days I have to find an other place to park. But for me it is all worth it, but I understand it might not be for everyone.

Picturesque town with amazing natural surroundings. The beaches are really beautiful but I can imagine how packed they get in the holiday season. I think you visited this place at the perfect time ;)

@tipu curate

Thank you a lot! Yeah I guess the main season isn't so enjoyable here at the beach, September sounds the best to me :)

Simplemente un lugar mágico. Que hermoso se ve 😍

Hello. Thank you for giving me the chance to see Ortanto, a city that I read from history books and was very curious about. I was especially curious about the Otranto castle.

Welcome :)

how gorgeous! look at the color of the water, how blue, how crystal clear, too beautiful

Yeah I loved it! I already feel like I wanna go back

Otranto looks gorgeous! Thanks for sharing these photos with us. 🙏

Thank you!

The fortress in the town looks really impressive. I loved your comment about the water being too cold to swim. I used to swim regularly in the north Atlantic when I lived on the north coast of the UK. I guess the water temperature may have been a little different to southern Italy !

Oh yeah there it might have been really cold! I can't do that in winter! Here in Italy it would have been still possible though.

What a beautiful place for camping, it looks like heaven. thanks for sharing and i hope that you had a nice time there. Cheers!

Yeah I feel very grateful to be able to camp here! Thank you!

everything is so beautiful that I read your articles with pleasure, unique beautiful perfect places

Wow!The seawater is crystal clear. It must be cool and nice to take a dip! Thanks for this virtual tour!

Yeah I feel like I want the summer to start again! I miss the sea and swimming so much!
