HBO Max's reimagined Scooby Doo animation has been under scrutiny by the public even before the first episode aired back in January. The first time I saw the trailer of Velma, I expected that it would be judged because of how different it is from the Scooby Doo of our childhood days. However, I did not expect this show to spark up so much controversy. It seems like everyone with a phone is tweeting about how bad of an idea Velma is.
All the negativity surrounding Velma should have stopped me from seeing it but that was not the case. I like it when a show is as controversial as this one. I think a lot of people can relate to this. So, instead of totally avoiding this show, I just had to see it. I just had to know why this seemingly promising show is hated so much.

My Opinion on Velma/Mi opinión sobre Velma
Velma is not like other Scooby Doo shows that I have seen or know of. A major reason why people were outraged with the show was because of the changes in the race of the characters. Fred is the only major character that retains his ethnicity. On the other hand, Velma is Indian, Daphne is Asian while Norville is African and because of this, people are mad. Come on guys. Are we really doing this? I remember that people were not happy when we got a black Ariel for The Little Mermaid so I am not surprised that it's the same reactions with Velma. Personally, I don't think that this should be a big deal like people make it out to be.
I honestly believe that creators can reimagine these characters and present them to us differently. Creativity is a major thing for me as long as the production retains some part of the original idea. Personally, I love seeing new ideas of old characters come to life. The ethnicity change really does not bother me. I was more interested to find out how flexible these characters could get and I was impressed by what I saw.
The characters were not just different in their ethnicity but in their personality as well. My favorite personality changes were with Fred and Norville (who is supposed to be Shaggy). Normally, Fred is the alpha male of the group but in this show he is a spoilt little boy that is not cut out to be a leader. Shaggy is supposed to be the scared foodie and stoner but in this show he is a smart and responsible young man who apparently hates drugs. These differences in their personalities as teenagers were good but it was even better when the possible change to their personalities as adults was explained.
When I started to watch Velma, I thought I was beginning to understand why people disliked it. The first episode was fast paced and boring. It was challenging for me to concentrate on the episode because it just did not capture my attention. After watching the first episode, I really was not looking forward to the next one. A day later, I saw the next episode and it got better. It's a shame that the first episode did not manage to hook me as much as it is expected to. Some other person may have totally given up on the series after that awful initial experience and that does not look good for the show.
This series has an average storyline at best. The story is pretty straightforward with some twists and subplots. The mysteries were really not bad actually. The fact that I really love mysteries may be the major reason why I enjoyed the most part of this show. Some parts of it were predictable but others were unexpected. I was not too satisfied with the discovery of her mother and the explanation of her disappearance but I liked the rest of the mystery and how it all came together in the end.
My favorite part of the mystery was the origin of Velma's hallucinations. This concept gave this show a certain horror feel that I liked. The hallucinations were a great idea and were properly executed in most cases. I was really interested in this part of the mystery. I wanted to understand what caused the hallucinations and how it could be stopped. In the end, the explanation for the whole hallucination issue was not so great but it was ok to me.
The major problem I have with this show is that its final episode was rushed. The mystery that had developed over prior episodes was rushed to an ending in the last episode. This almost ruined the experience for me. It almost tore down any suspense that the show had managed to build up. This move of rushing a story so that they can close the season is never pleasant. It's way worse when it comes to a mystery show. Sure, the mystery had been unraveling over the other episodes but most of the truth came to light in the last episode. This greatly reduced the excitement for me.
Speaking of excitement, this show is one that makes fun of itself and I love that. There were a lot of self-referential jokes that were brilliant in my opinion. These jokes were made to lightly mock the show. Some of them are cringe but I laughed at most of them. Some other jokes referenced the entire Scooby Doo franchise. These were fun to watch and hard to not laugh at. I definitely love this type of humor.
Should you watch Velma?/¿Deberías ver a Velma?
Velma is definitely not for everyone. For those that may want to preserve their memories of a relatively innocent Scooby Doo franchise, you may want to steer clear of this show because it talks a lot about sex, drugs, murder, discrimination and other real word stuff. If you are like me and you don't mind, then you can check this show out. It's not the best but it's not that bad.
I am glad I shunned the bad reviews and saw this show. It has its problems but is entertaining nevertheless. I just hope that it does not get cancelled like many other shows these days.
I give Velma a score of 7/10.

Oh I didn't mean to further discourage you from seeing this show😅. The truth is that it has its flaws but I ultimately enjoyed myself. I was interested a lot but at the end, they just rushed it in order to close the season. I've seen this in a number of series. Despite how it ended, I still want to see another season. You should watch the show and know if you'd feel the same way : )
ENG= I'm really surprised at how much they changed the characters in this animated series, they really gave a big change compared to what I was used to, I saw the animated series in premiere, but I did not want to see it because first I wanted to see someone who made a review to see if I was convinced at all, I should take a look at it to see how it was, but I notice that it has had many reviews, which I did not know, anyway I will see it to see what more things change, for me the strongest impact was to change the classic Shaggy.
The change of Shaggy impacted me a lot too but I just had to roll with it. The changes in the other characters are also massive but it's not that bad when you get used to them. You should see the show yourself and find out whether you'd like the characters. I would advise that you don't focus a lot on the changes and just try to enjoy the show. It's really not that bad.
Yes this show maintains most of the mystery gang but not as you remember them. There are massive changes to our beloved Scooby characters which is why many people did not like the show. Personally, I think it is interesting to see these characters different from what we know. I love to see this creativity!
Thank you for stopping by my post!
If I have read many negative comments regarding this series due to the physical changes of the characters, it is a shock for people who do not like changes to something (in this case characters) 😕, personally I have not yet seen but watching the trailer may give you a chance. For my part, I would see it without comparing it because although there are similarities, it is something totally new.
This show was absolutely pounded by the reviews online. It was very controversial and the critics were so merciless. A lot of the criticism came from how the characters were made but there were other flaws as well. Still, you are right that this show is different from others and should be considered as such. We really shouldn't compare it to other productions so aggressively.
Haha. The irony. In my case, I did not like the first episode but enjoyed the ones that followed. Definitely shows that everyone has different tastes in everything. I'm glad that you put in the effort to see this show and judge for yourself whether it was good or not. I respect your opinion as it should be.
Greetings to you too!😁
I guess it could improve, but having such a bad firts EP... I wonder how it actually got approved by hbo...
I loved Velma as a kid. I loved the whole Scooby Doo franchise and I didn't miss watching it back then, after school everyday. Velma has always been the smart one in the crew, I guess that was what endeared me to her character. I never knew Velma has a spinoff of her own. But with your review I just know now, i might check it out. Thank you.
Even though Velma was a major part of the mystery gang, she was sidelined a lot while Scooby and Shaggy shined. I feel that it was important that they made a show like this but it failed to connect a lot of people to the Velma that they know and love. Still, I liked it because it was different and I was willing to welcome the change. You may like it too if you watch it.
Thanks for reading and for the comment.
It's true that something better could have been done. I understand why you would not like the first season of the show. It felt like it wanted to be like Rick and Morty but failed. Still, I enjoyed it and would gladly see a second season. I do hope it improves though.
