We in Libya have a habit like that too, especially if the house they'll be entering has a carpet. Though people are more lax about it nowadays.

Yeah, even down here, people are careless about observing it but that's only if there's no elder in the house
Elders are our anchors to good ethics... I dread the day young people now become the elders, that is if the wisdom of age didn't fix them.
It would be a generation of little or no morals
