We in Libya have a habit like that too, especially if the house they'll be entering has a carpet. Though people are more lax about it nowadays.

we grew up believing that, but I think it's okay to be mindful of the context and people you are dealing with in this modern age. Some people are still keen on the belief of removal of shoes before entering the house.
