This is the setting that introduces us to Sasha Akimov, a 15-year-old musician whose life is about to be forever altered. Sasha, a member of the 333rd Rifle Regiment of the Red Army, lives with his older brother Andre after losing their parents in the Spanish Civil War. His heart longs for Ana, the daughter of Lieutenant Andre Kitov, hinting at youthful love amidst the chaos.
