Fast-forward 33 years. Brenner's life has taken a dismal turn; he has abandoned gaming to become a mediocre electronics installer, while Rupert, his former friend, holds a failing presidency. Following a mysterious explosion at a military base, Brenner receives an urgent call from President Rupert regarding the bizarre incident. To his shock, he discovers that the explosion was a real-life version of a Galaga attack—one that ties back to his championship in '82.
Despite being mocked at a National Security Council meeting when explaining his theory, Brenner becomes increasingly aware that an alien intelligence has misinterpreted the 1982 recording as a challenge to a competition.
