The 2017 film Gifted tells a poignant story of a gifted young girl named Mary Adler, who after losing her mother, grapples with the challenges of her extraordinary intelligence and the familial dynamics that influence her upbringing.

Mary’s Early Life

Mary is introduced as a seven-year-old prodigy living with her loving but troubled Uncle Frank in Pinellas County, Florida. Since her mother’s tragic demise six years prior, Frank has raised her while trying to protect her from the complexities of the world outside. Mary is not overly keen on starting her formal education, preferring the comfort of their home where she has been homeschooled thus far. Frank, however, recognizes the importance of socialization and encourages her to attend school.
