The scrolls in question, known as the Herculaneum Papyri, were discovered in a Roman villa and are believed to originate from a library that may have housed thousands of manuscripts. Following the catastrophic eruption in 79 AD, these documents were reduced to a charred state, rendering them nearly illegible to scholars and historians alike. However, thanks to high-resolution tomography, researchers have made remarkable strides in distinguishing the original ink and even deciphering some of the obscured letters.
